Urination Issues

I was advised that I may need to get a bladder sling surgery after childbirth to help with incontinence after my son was born. does anyone know anything about this? good or bad! Are there any meds as an alternative. I want a third baby later.

What can I do next?

I am not sure how bad your issue is - but when I was pregnant for my second i had to go to physical therapy for my back. I very unnexpected side efect was that I didn't seem to have as many problems with incontinence after a couple of months of exercising. (not just Kiegel's!!)
I was dong some walking on the treadmill, a recumbent bike, and some leg exercises on the weight machines. I feel this helped me more than i could have hoped for - maybe some lower body/abdomen strength training will help you as well.

Good Luck in whatever course you choose!

Hi C., I had a sling done 4 years ago and still no leaks. The recovery time was about 1 week of no lifting and 1 day at home with a catha so I would suggest you wait until you are 100% sure aren't having anymore children and that your youngest is about 3 to 4 years old so that way they can understand that mommy can't pick them up. I realize the inconvience of leakage and all of the embarassment that goes along with it. You can start this routine of emptying your bladder every 2 hours around the clock you will need to do it after the surgery anyway. It helped me towards the end before my surgery not as many leaks as before I started doing this and also make sure you drink lots of water and limit your coffee and soda intake. Whatever road you chose good luck.

I had the sling put on my bladder. Unfortunely it not help me at all. So there is no guarntee that it will work. I hope it does for your sake.

The surgery is not a bad surgery but it is surgery! You are 31 years young, why not try some conservative measurements like physical therapy. I am one and i specialize in womens' health. I highly recommend looking for this type of Physical therapy in your area!

I got the sling this summer and it works great! I'm 38 & have 4 kids, and after the second child I had lots of trouble with stress incontinence. I'd say I'm 99% fixed!
I don't know where you're located, but the urologist I saw is in Oneida, NY. It's an hour away from where I live, but the closest qualified person. Syracuse also has people that perform this type of procedure. The key is to follow the post surgical instructions (basically the same as post childbirth, but also no swimming or tub baths), and if you plan on having ANY more children after this baby, do not do it yet. Childbirth can totally reverse the process or cause the sling to come loose, so you'll have wasted time and money on the procedure. There is a small percentage of people the process does not work for, but I think it's worth a try. Also, insurance will cover this procedure and it's an outpatient process. Any questions - email me.

C.,
I have had this surgery. I also needed it after giving birth to my daughter. The surgery itself was no problem. The total re-coup was about 4-6 weeks (I had a hard time going afterwards, had to be totally relaxed and not rushed to go so it took some time) I am very happy with the results now. I have no problems at all and I can enjoy doing activities with my daughter (jumping rope, running etc. with no thought of an accident)
I would recommend the surgery. Good Luck
M.

It is a very good procedure to have. After my third child I had one. One thing that you must do is after you must take it easy. No lifting, vacuuming, to much up and down stairs . Take it easy for awhile.
