Trimmed or Bushy?

This isn't what you think...I'm talking about bushes...in my yard! LOL! I live in a suburb of Phoenix. All of our community streets and shopping areas are kept up very nicely. All the bushes are trimmed perfectly round, they aren't left alone to grow naturally.

My husband and I currently rent, but had a big discussion about what we would want when we buy a house. In my own yard, I prefer the "natural" bushy look. Now, that being said, we only have 3 bushes in the front yard, one being a rosemary bush, and one cactus. In the backyard, we have 3 large bushes, a lemon tree and a small bush. The rest of the yards is rock and pavement. It has NO grass at all and is what we locally call a "desert" yard, meaning low maintenance and low water.

I have seen beautiful yards and communities with trimmed bushes that are beautiful, but personally, I just like the natural look. I also don't like planters that have the "right" number of plants and are strategically placed, like all in a line. What about you?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Jo, LOL! Yes, there seems to a need for a happy medium for some people. Although I like my bushes not trimmed and natural, I don't like it overgrown and messy. Some yards are like that. At my home that I lost in my divorce, every Oct I had the 3 bushes trimmed round (they were silver and looked like big cotton balls) so I could add spider webs and my huge spiders on top for Halloween. =)

You crack me up!! I admit when I saw the title - I DID go there!! LOL!!!

I prefer trimmed - especially for hedges.

Trees and flower bushes? Maintained - not so much trimmed as maintained. Does that make sense? I don't want them running W. but I don't want them to look like a topiary plan.

I don't mind planters. I prefer stuff in the ground. But planters can add a nice look. It all depends upon the location and the house - if there's a big yard with kids - I want it cleared with trees for shade and SOME flowers for pollination.

Does that make sense?

I love the well-manicured yard!! Bushes trimmed neatly, grass cut, weeds pulled, etc. Plus, the planters placed evenly, etc.

To me, it's just a reflection of what the inside of the house is going to look like!!! Messy yard; messy house!! Just my way of thinking!! Too bad my house doesn't reflect back on my own yard!! lol!!!

Fun question!!

I am kind of strange, I have some bushes I trim there are others that just look silly trimmed. Together they look kind of cool. Okay I think they look cool, for all I know my neighbors are laughing behind my back. :)

Thanks! I totally "went there"! Manicured bushes. I love the trimmed edges, nice cut grass, mulch. The design of our house works better that way. =)

My parents lived in Kingman, AZ and had a little piece of grass the rest was rocks. My dad said he never paid so much for stupid rocks!

LOL, man I have a dirty mind cause I immediately thought this was about something else! :0)

I think it would depend on what everything looked like to me. I have 2 bushes by my front window and if I just let them go they get all crazy looking with new growth coming out here and there, so I do trim them down once a year. Nothing too fancy though, just a little off the top & sides to square them up.

We don't trim our trees or bushes.
Some people in our neighborhood do.
Others don't.

Commercial developments or planned residential areas, have landscapers who can do it. And/or it is a part of the architectural design aspect... of which, the landscape is also, "planned" to look a certain way, by Landscape Designers, In conjunction with the building structure.

Not all communities or neighborhoods, are "planned" developments.
The recent ones are, and they have HOA's. Home Owners Associations or development managers etc. So then the "looks" of the landscaping has to be approved or look a certain way or at least comply with certain rules of the development.

Per commercial developments or planned communities, the pricing of those developments, also has factored into it, the upkeep of the landscaping and the "ambience" of it. And each development has a certain style, they are portraying for sale purposes. Too.

Catchy subject line! I had to laugh once I opened this post! :)

I admit it, I love the manicured look. Also, the style of my home does not compliment a more bushy, natural look. So every spring, I trim it up and mulch away.

I think they look more modern when they are shaped but still a little bushy. The perfectly trimmed look reminds me of the 50s or 60s.

It really is better for the plants if you trim them, aside from the aesthetics. They are hardier, have more leaves throughout the bush, and last longer.

If they are left too long to grow willy-nilly, by the time you have to clip them, they look like they're half dead. That's a "natural look" that I don't care for, I admit!
