I am seeking suggestions on treating constipation for my five-month-old who is formular-fed. She seems to become constipated when traveling. I am wondering if it is stress-related? I are wondering if anyone has any suggestions for treating it? Thank you, A.

Dear A.-

Just a thought...but you mentioned that this is a problem when travelling...Do you mix the formula with water? Maybe you could try using bottled water?

Hi

I would also suggest some kind of fruit juice mixed with some water , prune juice initially works really well , just used 1oz to around 3oz of water. To help prevent it from happening all the time you can give a little bit of juice mixed with water daily , just helps to keep them soft as formula milk really does make them constipated , once she is old enough to start having some pureed fruits/veggies it will stop happening.

Good luck

My doctor always recommended putting in Karo syrup (the light one, not the dark one). I usually found it by the other syrups at the store. Traveling definitely affected my kids too. It would "work itself out" after a few days. Good luck!

My daughter started being constipated at about 5 weeks. We were told to put a tablespoon of dark karo syrup in her bottle. We did and it took care of the issue. Hope this helps

If you can't find prune juice, use pear juice. That worked wonderfully for us. Good luck!

This happened to my daughter. The doctor told us to put a 1/2 teaspoon of Karo syrup in her bottle each time she ate. It worked great. My daughter is 2 now and we still do this when she is constipated.

We have dealt with constipation with since my daughter was born. Try a little bit of kiro syrup in her bottle you could also give her some prune juice. Gerber makes a baby prune juice so you don't have to worry about mixing it with water. My daughter didn't like to drink the prune juice but she didn't mind when I mixed her cereal with it. Good luck & I hope she is feeling better soon.

Hi A., if you haven't already, check into infant massage. You can pick up a book & learn some simple massage strokes for her belly & lower back that help move things along & relieve digestive issues.
I started massaging my daughter when she was just a few weeks old. She had colic, it was so hard to watch & I found a great book on Infant Massage, which I practiced & it helped immensely!
I went on to become trained & certified as an instructor. There are classes one can take, or you can read over a book.
One particular massage stroke I learned that works WONDERS is, always asking permission first if you can massage her, if she would like a massage, do soft gentle strokes in the shape of a figure 8 lying sideways. Do not press at all on her spine, just light, soft strokes up and around, maybe an inch high circles, back and forth, for about 5 minutes. This has worked so many times. Gets things flowing!
As to it being stress related, since it sounds like it only happens when traveling, as exciting as it can be going to a new place, when a young child's schedule & routine changes, it can affect bowel habits, just as for an adult! If she were to be constipated all the time, you would want to discuss with a doctor.
And be sure to have support to handle your stress and concern!
Let me know if you have any further questions about massage!

Traveling causes dehydration for the average person, and dehydration is the foremost cause of constipation. Ask your doctor if you can give her water when you're traveling.

Give her Karo. Its corn syrup (the light one not the dark). Put a tablespoon or 2 in her bottle with her formula so she doesn't taste it. Our pediatrician told us to do that and We gave that to our daughter for a few months and now she is regular and has no problems with cobstipation and doesn't need anything in her bottle. Best wishes!

my oldest daughter always had the same issue when we traveled. I found that giving her the gerber apple prune juice helped. Don't water it down, just pour about 4oz in a bottle. Pear juice or apple juice works also but I found tht prune juice works the best.

Our son, who's now 20 months seemed to have the same symptoms. My opinion is yes, it is stress related. We would give him apple/prune juice or any of the "p" fruits and veggies (pears, peaches, peas...and rasins work for him too). Just don't over do it especially with the prune juice!
