Time to Ditch the Baby Tub?

My son will be one in three weeks. We have been really fortunate with our baby tub- he's been able to use it since day one, but recently he has been very upset when in it. I know it's not the water b/c he LOVES his baby pool and my parents in-ground. He is constantly standing up, which is unsafe. So, two questions... when is it time to use the grown-up tub? Can anyone suggest some products to make our tub safe?

They sell a yellow bath sponge that won't move while submerged in the big tub, I've been using that for my almost 1 yo for the last 4 months. They have them at Target for a few dollars. The other thing I've used is a rubber bath mat. I found one at Walmart that is long enough to cover the length of the tub and has suction cups to stay in place. I used that for my son when he was a little older than 1 until he was about 2. That might be better if he likes to stand up in the tub. That's how my son was and he wouldn't slip. It's also machine washable. Good luck.

Hi K.,

My son moved into the big tub at around nine months. He was too squirmy and excited in the baby tub, so we moved him cold turkey into the big tub. He LOVED it! We bought a whole bunch of new toys he could play with and he was so, so happy. In the beginning we put a towel under his bottom to give him some stability, but once he was comfortable, we took that away. We still (he's two years old now) have to remind him once in a while to not stand up while in the tub, but for the most part he's content splashing, playing and having a good time!

If you would like to get a big bath mat to put on the bottom of your tub to help with the slipping and sliding, they have full-size mats at Target and Bed Bath and Beyond. We bought one and it wouldn't suction to the tub for some reason, so we took it back and simply used a towel. We also bought a cover for the faucet so my little guy wouldn't accidently bump his head. Other than finding a low stool for my husband or me to sit on while he's bathing, we didn't need anything else for the tub.

Your son will love being in the big tub! My best to you!

With mine, big tub at 6 months. Just make sure they can't slip, hit head. So use rubber bath mat, or bath seat to hold him sitting. Best seat is Safety 1st, discontinued, blue with suction cups on bottom. Can find on ebay.
