My 10mo old baby is sucking her thumb and that doesnt bother me, but i am guessing that because she has teeth her thumb is rubbing against them, and it has made her thumb look very sore, it looks almost like a brushburn, and has scabbed over.. i have tried bandaids and even putting a sock over her hand, but she wants to suck it.. is there anthing that i could do to stop her?

What can I do next?

Hi J.. Both of my daughters still suck their thumbs and they are 9 and 7. They only suck their thumb when they sleep or are seriously tired. But the serious downfall from that is the morning breath from it. It's horrible. Neither one of them started this habit until they were about 3. I've tried all different methods and it doesn't work. I work for a dentist and he's even tried talking to them and it's not working. I wish you luck and hope you find a solution that works for you.

my daughter also sucks her thumb and she has a blister on the top and it is very dry and looks sore everywhere else. Her dr said that it was fine. If it doesn't bother her than it shouldn't bother me. If it hurts her enough she will stop...trust me! Then if that happens look into other options for her like a binky or a favortie toy. I hope I could help!

I have a 10 month old as well who has sucked her thumb since birth. My daughter only does it while she is sleeping. when she is awake during the day she is so occupied with doing other things she's not interested in sucking her thumb...yet. I agree witht the person who recommended the lansinoh. it is expensive but it will last a long time. Other than healing the sores i wouldn't worry about her sucking her thumb. She is still too young to put things that are distasteful to her on it. that is her security and she needs that, especially since she is only 10 months. As a former thumb sucker, I believe that when they are ready to quite they will!

I wouldn't try to stop her thumb sucking at this age. To heal her thumb, however, you may try Lansinoh. She can still suck her thumb with it on there. It's used mainly for soothing and healing sore nipples due to breastfeeding, but can also be used to heal cuts, burns, diaper rash . . . It's expensive, but trust me, a LITTLE goes a looooonnnnnng way!

I use it on my son's thumb because it's chapped now from him sucking outside in the winter. Clears up fairly quickly!

If you want to avoid a pacifier, you could find a safe baby toy for her to chew on with appendages on it similar in size to her thumb and substitute that.

you could try putting something on there that doesnt taste good but is safe for her to have in her mouth..make sure she doesnt have any sores on her thumb before doing this. Something sour worked for me. Good luck!

she is probably just bitting on her thumb. As far as the thumb sucking goes. I would try something that she won't like. Maybe rub baby lotion on her hands for bed.It worked for me when i was 20.

HI J. I WOULD JUST KEEP TAKING HER THUMB OUT OF HER MOUTH. HAND HER A TOY OR TRY TO OCCUPY HER WITH SOMETHING ELSE SO SHE DOESNT PUT HER THUMB IN HER MOUTH. IT IS KINDA CUTE LOOKING WHEN THEY ARE BABIES BUT IT IS A HARD HABIT TO BREAK AS THEY GET OLDER. ITS MUCH EASIER WHEN THEY ARE LITTLE, MY FRIEND IS 33 YEARS OLD AND SOMETIMES STILL WAKES UP WITH HER THUMB IN HER MOUTH. SHE SUKED IY WHEN SHE WAS LITTLE AND GOT TEASED IN SCHOOL FOR CONTINUING DOING IT. GOOD LUCK STEPH
