Ok Moms... Help me out here. Bonnie Hunt interviewed a man that wrote a book about teaching kids a different way of learning. He was told as a child that he was "dumb" and he had a horrible time in school. My son is having such a hard time in Kindergarden & i will do anything to help my sweet boy :) He is in Speech, OT and Spec Ed for reading.

I've googled & Youtube... but i'm not sure what to google because i don't remember his name :(... this was such a great episode, my son was just a toddler so i didn't think to much about it until now.

thanks :)

I have been working w/ parents for yrs----If your son is having such a hard time. Let him repeat K , if necessary !!! This will give him time to pick up the skills. If he is in speeh, OT and reading then there are developmental delays...No need to rush him into 1st grade where the academics increase.

is his name howard gardner ?? I didn't look at the link someone else provided. but Gardner is big in education as showing that some people learn best when they hear things, some learn best when they move their body, some learn best on their own and some best when they work on a team project and can bounce things off each other.

I would just find what your ds is good at and give him some pride in that, maybe he is artistic or super funny, or very kind. that can be his "thing"

There is tons of research on learning styles and you don't have to go buy a book to learn about it. There are many many many sites where you can go and take a quiz to see where your strengths and weaknesses are. I am an audio learner mostly followed by visual then by writing.

So when I was in college I learned I needed to have a tape recorder and put my notebooks and text book away and simply record the lecture and listen/watch the teacher. If I took notes nothing made sense because I missed over half of what the professor said.

If I did this then later as I listened to the lecture I'd write specific points down that I'd retain way more of what the professor had taught.

I can still recall perfectly a lot of conversations I've had over my life with people. I can see their mouths moving and hear their voices.

By studying and learning about learning styles I was able to learn more effectively.

You can do this too. You simply need to google learning styles the look at the different sites and start making some decisions on how your little guy might more effectively

Most children (it's estimated that it's up to 80%) with a reading disability have dyslexia. Start there. But I warn you, they don't like to diagnose it until the kid is around 8yo. I also suggest holding him back if you need to, we did with one of ours and it made all the difference.
