Hello Moms!

My daughter has been gnawing on her fists for the past week or so and has been very very fussy. She aslo has been rubbing her cheeks on my shoulder whenever I burp her. She cannot even sleep, until she is exhauseted. O was getting very worried b/c she was not getting enought sleep at all. We are to the point that we have to swaddle her so she can sleep.

I cannot figure it out. At first I thought she was colic, but ruled that out. Then maybe we thought she had a sore throat. but that is not it. Has anyone expereinced their infants start teeting so young? Oh and she drools too.

Any experiences?

Thanks!

J.

Same with me. I have a 5 month old who has been drooling, gnawing and mouthing for 3 months. My pediatrician said that it was her teeth moving into her jaw. Now I have read the her Salvia gland are developing and getting ready. He recommended letting her gnaw and mouth things. My Daughter didn't fuss however but she drools like a banche. Now she is older and eating cereal and still mouths everything. We found that a clean finger message works for her. It really seems to help with her pain. I also have invested in plastic backed Bibs which have really saved a lot of clothes.

Good Luck

We didn't realize my daughter had been teething until she bit my husband's finger - LOL! She had 3 teeth by the time she was 3 months old! (And be prepared, those who get them early lose them really early, generally).

My son got his first tooth at a very young age too. Everyone said it wasn't possible - but there it was! He didn't get another tooth for a very long time. So that could be it - the drooling is another sign of teething. Feel around and see if any part of her gum feels hard or bumpy. When they drool a lot and teethe, they can get diarrhea too - just so you are warned. Hope this resolves soon - nothing is more tiring than a fussy and uncomfortable baby.

Its very possible shes teething. My youngest cut her 1st tooth at 3 months! Try rubbing her gums with your finger, see what you find, & how she reacts to it. Consult with your pedi on what they suggest. Maybe you could give her some Infant Tylenol before bedtime.

Hello J.,
My son started teething at about 3 months and now at 11 months, has 8 teeth!!! I bought a teething ring right away and started giving him tylenol when the pain was unbearable. I did not have much luck with orajel--the numbing gum gel. Also, teething ring toys and cold wet washcloths for him to suck and bite on worked wonders. Good luck!!

Absolutely she could be teething. I have 3 children. My oldest got his first tooth at 2 months. My second at 3 months. Watch for swollen gums and try a spot of baby orajel. You can even check with the dr on tylenol. That would help relieve the pain to let her sleep

Hello J. !!

2 1/2 months old for teething sounds a bit young. My first child had his first teeth cut through the gum at 4mo old. I would suspect as far as the gnawing on her fists, at that age, they really cant control their hands, that is all part of why you swaddle so they arent startled by their own hands. Babies enjoy anything in their mouths, the breast, bottle, paci, even a finger, she might just be discovering her hands and likes the taste of them. There will be lots more drooling to come!!! Also, there is nothing wrong with swaddling, I would continue to do so, it will help her feel secure and get better sleep.
Best of Luck

Hi J.,
I had somthing similar happen to my daughter when she was a little older. I asked my doctor about it. She said it was possible that it was teething, but she doubted it because her gums were not swollen at all. I could see where the teeth would come in, but that was it. Now she is 5 1/2 months and definately teething becsuse her gums are very swollen. So you could check her gums to see what they look like to get an idea if they are swollen or not. It could be teething, but she could also be going through something else. Unfortunately it is very hard to tell when they are thins little. Good luck

I don't know, my husband cut teeth at about 4 months so this could be the case, because about two months before my son cut teeth he was extremely irritable and he was definitely "teething" even though you can't see teeth yet. This would go on in in spurts, you won't see teeth but the gums may be a little swollen and my son would get a little runny nose. The teeth cut through layers of skin, so it is very uncomfortable. I would try (with Doctors permission) giving baby a little infant tylenol to see if this helps. And if it does, then it is probably teething. Also, if you have those teething things that you can pop into the fridge, she may like to chew on that too. Good luck!!

Could be. Try Teething Tablets by Hyland...if it's teething they will help her right away without hurting her...they dissolve instantly in the mouth.

Good luck

Hi J.,

It sounds like she's definitely teething though her teeth may take awhile to arrive. My son started that young but his teeth didn't show up till at least around 6 mo., for the two bottom ones anyway.
I'd talk to your pedi just to chat with regards to sleep issues. Poor little mite. Teething hurts some babies and they take a long time to push through.

Hi J., my son started teeth at three months, got his first tooth between 4-5 months and hasn't stopped since! THe first few were definatley the hardest, but now that he is used to it it's much easier. My pediatrian recommended Hylands tablets, which you can get at CVS in the baby aisle. They are tiny little white tabs that you rub on their gums, they instantly disolve and my son always seemed to feel much better. I also know that when he was that little he couldnt hold a teeth ring, plus they were kindof big for his little mouth, so we would wet baby wash cloths, twist them up and freeze them in zip lock bags. whenever he needed it we would pull one out and let him suck until it thawed, that seemed to work really well too. And yes my son drooled like crazy! We sometimes kept a bib on him all day and if he got too wet he got a rash on his chin! Good luck!

She could be teething but you should check in with the Dr., she could have an ear infection. My children all had one very early on and it was terrible.

Give her a pacifier, maybe she wants to soothe herself some how?

Hi J.,
I bet your daughter is teething. My daughter is doing the same thing, though she is 4 months now, she has been doing this for about a month. My son who is two now got his first teeth on the bottom when he was 3 months old which was so early so I am thinking she will get teeth soon too. I don't remember him gnawing on his fists as much as my daughter is now but he definitley drooled a lot. I bet you will see some little teeth on the bottom soon.

My eldest daughter had her first tooth in before she went for her 6 week check up.When it comes to teething, anything is possible. It's rare, but occasionally a baby is born with a tooth. It can also take a long time between seeing signs of teething & seeing the first tooth. Everything you described sounds like teething to me.

Absolutely! Went through this with both of my boys! Teething started about 2-1/2 - 3 months with teeth by 5 months! I highly recommend Baby Oral Gel...it really does help and you only need a tiny little dab to make a difference! Oh, and cloth bibs to help with the drooling!!!

Hang in there, Momma!

Not necessarily teeth, but the hand chewing, and drooling is totally normal @ this age. My DD is a drool FAUCET, but no teeth. It happened with both of my little ones. As far as the sleep goes, are you putting her down BEFORE she is really sleepy? A good rule of thumb is 2 hours of wake time. She also may be hitting a growth spurt. Swaddling isn't a bad thing. Remember, she was in your snug womb for 9+ months; a snug environment is what she is used to. I swaddled my DD until she was about 3 months. Remember, all this is temporary. Good luck.

I thought that was the case with my son as well, but he is seven months now and still no teeth!! but now we can see them trying to pop through. My doc said that babies go through gum thickening which is also painful for them. Good luck!

It is very possible that she is teething. Mine started at 3 months and didn't cut any teeth for another month. Then they started coming 4 at a time. Check with the pediatrician but I think some children can start as young as 2 months if I remember correctly (that's what my pediatrician said.) By the way, the ora-gels didn't work for me. I was able to rub her gums with one of those baby tooth brushes with the very soft rubber bristles. That seemed to help a little. Make sure you keep wiping the drool with a dry cloth. If you don't she can develop a rash.

My daughter started "teething" around 2 1/2 - 3 months, but unfortunately didn't a get a single tooth until she was 6/7 months. She pretty much teethed until that point. However, every tooth after her first went very well, with little to no fuss.
