Does anyone know anything about the Synagis shot for RSV? My pediatrician wants to give it my twins that were born at 36 weeks and are healthy.

What can I do next?

yes, My daughter is a twin and she was on it, and will be back on it soon. I went almost 4 yrs with out her geting it and she got it last month and it was 3weeks of hell. She has a heart and lung condition. But her twin brother got it also and he had it for about the same time frame 3weeks, and he is healthy. It helps to give the under 2yrs the strength not to get the virus. Believe me it helps. Just give the twins tylenol before the shot and after for about 24-48hrs and they will be fine.

I suggest you stop in at Lampe Family Chiropractic and borrow some literature on vaccines. They have brochures as well as books you can loan out. Dr. Mike and Dr. Jana's office is located on the corner of Del Prado and SE 6th Street just south of Pine Island Road. Tell them A. DeFrance sent you and you'll probably be able to borrow a book even though you are not a patient. Also Dr. Robbie Murdock and his wife Nonine, of Natural Family Physicians had excellent resources on vaccines. Dr. Murdock provides public seminars on vaccines as well. They are located on Vencinnes (?sp) Blvd. near 47th Terr.

Like many of your responses, I too strongly recommend reading as much as you possibly can about giving children vaccines BEFORE making your decision. Knowledge is everything when it comes to our childrens medical and health choices and care. The online forums at Dr Sears website as well as mothering.com should prove very valuable as well as the Dr.Sears book and a few other books such as 'Vaccines, A Thoughtful Parents Guide' and 'How to Raise a Healthy Child in Spite of Your Dr'. Vaccines are something that can't be taken back once given. No harm in delaying any/all until you know evrything you want to know to feel confident in youtr deciosion.

Yes, my daughter gets it. She was born premature and was in ICU for the first couple of weeks for breathing. The synagis is a shot that is given during the flu season; one shot a month for the entire season. It's given typically to babies that may be susceptible to getting sick easier than other babies, especially if they were born before their term. My daughter is eight months old and she had the shot regularly and never got sick. I switched insurances a few months ago and the flu season has started and because my insurance wouldn't cover it she couldn't get the shot and guess what.. she caught a virus and we're going on over two weeks now that her body is still fighting to get over it. You know, the typical coughing, sneezing, fever which is gone now and diarrhea. I now have my insurance taken care of again and am waiting for the shot to be delivered to her doctor so she can have it. I truly believe it helps. You can probably google synagis to find out more and the company that supplies the shot, I found out, does work with families if they can no longer afford to pay for it (as long as they are not insured) because cashwise it's very, very expensive.

My advice is to ask Dr. Sears, a nationally known MD who has published a book on vaccines. You can ask him here at this forum:

http://www.askdrsears.com/forum/view.asp

He personally answers all questions - it may take him a few days, but he will answer it.

I would also strongly recommend his book, The Vaccine Book. It is based on research, not scare tactics. He gives you lots of information about the risks and benefits of each vaccine. He gives you advice but lets you make your own decision. The book also has an alternative vaccination schedule to protect your child from side effects as much as possible.

Dear Tahnee,
This is very controversial, but I have been on both sides of the issue - until being convinced by the mountains of evidence and following the money trail.
I have very strong opinions about this, so you don't want to get me started.... but you can check out the facts for yourself at www.mercola.com (Dr Mercola is an MD and would advise against it) and the Weston Price Foundation (They accurately report damage done to children from unnecessary vaccinations, including lawsuits won). So glad you are willing to research it for yourself and not take the automatic response of any Dr who is overwhelmingly influenced by the drug companies who profit from the shots.

Morning Tahnee,
I too have twins, My boys were born at 32 weeks. They did stay in the nicu for 4 and 5 weeks.... They were both healthy just small and needed to learn how to eat on their own.... I did give my boys the synagis shots from oct-march of last year, I would recommend it for the simple fact that they are too young for a flu shot and given the flu season is here it is better to be safe then sorry RSV is very serious and I wouldn't chance it at all.... The boys were fine there were no side affects etc.... I would def. consider giving it to them just to know you have done your part on keeping RSV at bay. early babies then add twins to that they are at very high risk..... I don't have all the medical facts but being a mom thats been there I would say go for it, ITS a precation worth taking, I know they seem healthy mine were too but having twins is completely different the single child in a lot more ways then one..... CONGRATS on the birth of your new baby girls..... Good luck and if you ever have twin questions please feel free to email me... Good luck and God Bless

RSV is like the common cold to you or I but in babies it is much worse. All children are at risk but however most typical healthy children are able to fight it off. your children are right on the boarder for qualifing infants. They do not qualify for the synagis shot unless they are premature which is under 36 wks unless they have heart issues. Your insurance company will not even approve the shot it runs about $2000.00 per shot per month through RSV season which runs until March. Let me know if I can of any help. Hope the babies are doing well.

HI, my son was born premature at 32 weeks and received it last year. The shots are very expense, but well worth it. My insurance company did cover most of the cost. So, check with your insurance company. The cost of the shot went up with my son's weight. He received more as he got bigger. My son never got sick at all and was in alot of different doctors offices. He was exposed to a lot of sick kids. Frequent handwashing helps!! He never got sick the whole season. It is tough to see them get shots every 4 weeks, but it kept him protected till he was strong enough to fight off infections. Unfortunately, this year we are on our own... Hope this helps...

Tahnee:

My name is Grace and I have a 5 year old daughter that was born at 25 weeks, extermely premature. She was given synagis shots until she was 2 years old. Aside from been premature, she has been very healthy, thanks God.
When babies are born early they have more risk to get RSV and as you know the shots are to prevent them from getting this life threatening virus. I have a friend that had a full term baby and when he was 5 months he got RSV and was hospitalize for 2 weeks. If you are afraid I suggest to go for a second opinion to another pediatrician you may know is good (maybe a friend or family member can reccomend one they know). I always do that when I have doubts, I love my pediatrician but now a days we need to be alert !. Even if you see your babies healthy now, Thanks God, you may want to protect them from RSV. Good luck ! and God Bless you.
