I'm on my 4th day with strep and I am miserable! I can't eat or drink anything because my tonsils are so swollen and it hurts to even think about swallowing! I'm on my 2nd day of antibiotics and I'm taking Tylenol or ibuprofen every 3 hours. I've heard gargleing salt water helps, it doesn't. Any tricks you know of?

What can I do next?

have you tried the throat sprays like Chloraseptic? Salt water gargling WILL help--just keep at it, like very hour. You could also try a small amt. of hydrogen peroxide in water. (1/10th peroxide to 9/10 water). It may fizzle and gag you but it will help, too.
There is a scientific reason that saltwater draws infection out--so don't give up!
Warm tea with honey? Can you manage that with sipping?
Strep throat is miserable and I hope you're feeling better soon.
Rest, rest and more rest!

I don't know that it helps for the strep aspect, but I recently got over a sore throat. I alleviated the pain of swallowing by eating pickles. (Yes, pickles) The acid from the pickle really did a number on the pain. I could finally swallow! It worked for me and I plan to recommend it to anyone who asks!

I have horrible tonsils and salt water does help but it has to be almost hot and tons of salt. I also us listerine, you know the stuff that really burns I take a dropper like the ones in baby tylenol and tilt my head back while I hold the listerine in my throat and use the dropper to squeeze it into the deep crevises. Hope you feel better soon

MMS (aka miracle mineral solution) will knock out a strep infection, that's what I would use myself. A warm honey/lemon mix would be ok to gargle. Salt water isn't good to gargle unless it's sea salt. Using tylenol and ibuprofen may not be a good idea as they can weaken your immune system response and your liver.

I grew up having swollen gland, tonsilitis, and strep constantly, like 6 times a year. I'm surprised that you saw the salt water isn't helping. You need to use warm to hot water and lots of salt.

A few other things that might help....
Sucking on ice cubes
Drinking hot fluids - tea w/honey - disolve a bullion cube
A shot of whiskey
Chloriseptic spray

Hope you feel better soon. If there's not a huge improvement after 48 hours of taking antibotics, call your doctor.
