Stopped Taking Prenatal After Birth.

I stopped taking prenatal after the baby was first born because I was having issues with constipation and with everything else going on with newborn and a toddler I also frequently forgot. He was exclusively breastfed for the first 4 months but we are now supplementing with formula (which has DHA in it also). Is it too late to start taking them again or can I just continue with like a fish oil supplement? I think I stopped taking them with my first son too but I don't remember because it was 4 years ago, but he has developed fine, if not advanced. Also, I recently got blood work done and was told that all my levels (iron and vitamins etc) are perfect.

What can I do next?

I was told to keep taking them as long as I was breast feeding.
You can take them as long as you want to.
Some women like them even when they aren't pregnant/breast feeding/trying to conceive.
Ask your pediatrician and doctor and see what they say.
I tried a few prenatal vitamins before I found one that didn't upset my stomach so maybe you could try a different one that will work better for you.

It's been a long time, but was the constipation from the iron? Generally that's what causes it, so perhaps try a different variety or combination - you could ask your physician or the pharmacist, they would know for sure - if a) you need one and b) what formulation would work best for you.

If you're concerned about the baby getting what he needs through breastfeeding, I wouldn't worry about that as they take what they need. If your blood work levels are fine, I would think everything is ok. But I get why you'd want to know (I would too). A quick call or visit to pharmacy will point you in right direction.

I believe I took them while I breastfed. After that, I took a women's vitamin for a while. Just one of those one-a-day types.

Ahhhh...the reason your child is fussing when your husband is caring for his son....he's getting formula. Pump your milk and ensure your husband has enough to feed his son while he is CARING FOR HIM during the day....

There are Post-Natal vitamins. If your levels are "perfect" why do you feel like you need more???

not sure what you are worried about. You don't need PRE-Natal. You need POST-Natal. And check with your doctor - too much is NOT good for you.,

What's the deal? You stopped.. ok. Your blood work is good... ok

What's the issue? Sounds like you're just a busy normal new mom! Ease up and enjoy your baby.

Sounds like you are fine, although it doesn't hurt to start taking them again. Prenatal vitamins aren't all that much different from regular women's multivitamins with some extra folic acid. So, you can start taking them again if you want, you can take a regular multivitamin, or if you are perfectly fine healthwise, you can stop.

I personally took my prenatal vitamin plus extra iron the entire time I breastfed, but that's partially because I was always exhausted and chronically low iron. Sounds like you have a better diet than I did :)
