Spotting

Okay so this is a little uncomfortable, but here it goes....I used to be so regular you could set your calendar by me, and after some treatment for cervical cancer four years ago I began to be not as regular. Now since giving birth to my four month old son, I have had a problem with very irregular issues. I have noticed that Shortly after having my morning cup of coffe I begin to spot or even bleed. On mornings where I miss my coffe that doesn't happen. So is something wrong with me or is it the coffe?!? I am rather worried because I did have signs of a blood disorder that showed up during the last two pregnancies. Should I go to the doctor or should I just kick the coffee?!?

So What Happened?

THANK YOU ALL for your feedback, ideas, responces all of it! I called and made the earlies appointment with my OBGYN for May 14th and they will refer me back to the hematologist to retest for AAD...at one time they thought it was lupus, so maybe they will be able to get to the bottom of it all! Again, thank you all so much, great support!

Please go to the doctor, ASAP. This does not sound normal and the fact you had treatment for cervical cancer is a worry.

hey K.!

Here is what I know....the coffee is probably the source of your problem, for two reasons. The first is that caffeine is and can be used as a blood thinner. I know of people who suffer from migraines and dr's have put their patients in the hospital on caffeine drips. (in worse cases, because the caffeine speeds up the metabolism and helps release what was clogging in the blood stream) Which would make sense on why it would thin out the blood and cause you to spot. Reason number two is that coffee beans are no longer grown the way they used to be. In the old days, coffee would be grown under trees, so the birds in the trees could help keep pests from eating the coffee plants. Now coffee is grown out in the open, therefore farmers are needing pesticides to keep the bugs off. Your body could be reacting to the chemicals that are sprayed. Or it could just be simply that you need to cut back on the AMOUNT of coffee that you are drinking. Not to push your medical history aside, you need to keep up on bloodwork and TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR about what is going on and make sure that all stays well.....

You sound like you are health conscious and want to take care of your body. I used to be totally hooked on a pot and a half of coffee A DAY BEFORE LUNCH just to make it through the day. Then I started drinking this green tea from Herbalife, and seriously, I am down to one to MAYBE two cups a day and that is IT. That is all the energy that I need to make it through my busy schedule and it is awesome! One thing you may want to keep in mind is that caffeine is a diuretic, which means that it pulls fluid from your muscle tissues, which causes dehydration. Which causes cramping. So drink a lot of water to stay hydrated and see if that helps with the spotting issues if you sneak in that cup of coffee!

I hope this helps! and don't forget that things are going to take longer to recuperate the more children you have. Some of this could be hormone related and you may be deficient of some important nutrients! Hang in there and let me know how everything goes!

Blessings to you !

I have the same problem. Coffee is a stimulant and an inflamitory food...I would cut it out and then you'll know if it is the coffee. Inflamitory foods like coffee, sun-flower seeds, soda, high sodium foods...can interupt hormones and cause bleeding, even severe bleeding over time. Try also eating lots of your green leafy veggies...they can counter act that somewhat. But I know for me I always have to decided...do I drink this coffee? How important is it to me that I NOT bleed today? I am also seeing a naturalpathic doctor for related issues...but probably your system is still out of whack from the baby.

Cut out the coffee AND go see a doctor. Cutting out the coffee, stopping spotting, and waiting till your next annual might be good enough.

With your history of cervical cancer, it would be a good idea to go to your doctor. Abnormal bleeding can be a red flag.

Definitely kick the coffee - I have issues with caffeine in anything. But coffee has tremendous other "bad for you stuff" such as carcinogens and tannins. Try it for a solid week and then see what happens, and if nothing improves definitely see your Doctor. Your hormones after only 4 months are still regulating as well. If you have already had a spell with cancer - it would be so beneficial to be a purist where your food and drink is concerned - wish you well! I know it is a bit scary when our bodies speak out! Listen and adjust, healthy is so much better than that morning coffee.

Go to the doctor! Bleeding like that is not normal and should not be ingnored, even if it stops whenever you don't drink coffee.

Go to the doctor. Coffee may not be the exact cause. It could just be that you have some internal situation that is happening and as all of us women know, when you lay down to sleep blood gathers as if its in a bucket, and by the time you get up, make your coffee and begin to move around, the spotting could be releasing. As always, its best to check with a doc.

I WOULD kick the coffee but you should also speak with your dr! spotting is normal with a baby that young, it takes a while to get back to normal because of hormones. What you describe sounds unusual to me, though.

Go to the doctor. Don't ever leave anything to chance. Too many people leave things alone when they shouldn't. Besides, you probably won't really feel comfortable until you know for sure from a doctor. If it were your husband or child you would do it, now, go love yourself that much.
Hope all goes well.

I would go to the doctor. It is may be a symptom of a medical condition and not of just drinking coffee. At least call the office and talk with the nurse.

I would suggest switching to decaf coffee first. If that doesn't help the problem, try not drinking it at all for a while. Do you drink caffeinated sodas during the day? Do they affect it at all? I don't know that it would go through your system that quickly - what do you eat/drink just before you go to bed in the evenings? Try keeping a journal for a week of everything you ingest and when you spot or don't then you can look more clearly at the picture to see if you can figure out what's causing it. If you can't, it will certainly help your doctor, if either of you thinks it's diet that's causing the problem. Remember, when you make changes, allow at least 3 days to see if they make a difference, and only make one change at a time so it's easier to find the cause and solution. Good luck to you!

My advice would be to kick the coffee and see what happens after a couple of weeks. If it goes away for good, great. If not, go see a doctor.

I never drink coffee. I heard it likened to whipping a tired horse to make it go faster. Sure, it will go faster, but it just makes it more tired in the end. What it really needs is a rest. See if you can't work a little extra shut-eye into your schedule, if you need it (like when the babies goes down for a nap).

Just a thought.

I say go to the doctor. You dont want to take a chance on this being more serious later on in life. With all your kids so young and with your past history it is best to get to the bottom of this. Let your doctor know that you only notice it when you drink your coffee in the mornings. Go to the doctors!!!!

whenever a woman has any bleeding or spotting between periods she needs to see a doctor. There are many reasons this could happen, some are serious and the sooner treated the better you are. If you drink more than 1 cup coffee; stop the extras. whatever you do DO NOT IGNORE THIS SYMPTOM! God bless you., C.

Quit the coffee for now...and talk to your doctor.

Congrats on beating the "little c" (no power). I'm sure that your doctor would not call you a hypochondriac for staying on top of your health, in light of what you've been through. You should call anytime you have a question and make note of everything, especially until you learn your body again. Cancer (plus treatment) and pregnancy can turn everything upside-down, really wreaking havoc on yoru entire being, and you have to relearn your body and yourself.

Hi K.,

I don't know anything about the relation between coffee and bleeding and have never experienced this, but I had to quit drinking my beloved morning cup or two of coffee because it was really messing up my kidneys. I don't know why it triggers the spasms(caffine I'm sure), but it never failed on the mornings I drank coffee I would hurt the rest of the day. In your situation I would 100% not hesitate to go to the doctor-given you have already dealt w/ cancer and a possible blood disorder. When I need the caffine boost I drink a cup of hot tea or green tea. It has the same wake me up effects, but doesn't leave me in pain the rest of the day.
Good luck and I will be praying for you!
