Split Abs After Pregnancies

Hi mommas! Sooo...I feel like a freak of nature! I'm realizing that my abs are split from pregnancy. I guess it's not actually that uncommon, I just think it's weird! ( I have two girls almost 3 and 1 and got HUGE during both pregnancies) I've been doing some reading about this because I was hoping they just eventually grew back together, but the reading has said that that is not really the case...that you have to actually have surgery or just leave them be. I also read that there are some ab exercises you can do that actually make them worse and others that make them better...any other moms out there with split abs? The thing I'm wanting to know is that I'm working on getting back in shape and of course want to tone my tummy as much as possible as well and now I'm not sure how to do that or what is even possible. Suggestions?

What can I do next?

the most important (and usually surprising) thing to know is that crunches and sit-ups are an absolute no-no. they can actually make the situation worse. it is true that most cases of diastasis recti (that's the medical term for it) can only be fully repaired by surgery (it's a laproscopic procedure, fairly non-invasive, but still takes like a month to recover). here are some good exercised to do which can help reduce the gap and strengthen the muscles, lessening the pressure on your back and the likelihood of a hernia:

I've also heard several people recommend Mummy Tummy by Julie Tupler, though I can't speak for it personally.

isn't motherhood swell?! ;)

Well... i don't have a six pack or anything but getting rid of baby tummy is the start of bringing down the waist line. First thing my grandmother told me when i was pregnant was that as soon as having the baby i was not to go any where but stay at home covered up wearing the tightest gurdle you can find. This really helped bring down any air that could enter the body leaving you bloated...being that after having a baby your pores all over are open making your body sensitive to the environment. After about 6 weeks, the skin went back into shape leaving only room to now work out and burn calories on the tread mill and dance aerobics. Around this time doing sit ups and any other exercise for the abs is critical up until your baby is 3 years old you are able to get rid of pregnancy baby fat. Of course eating right has a lot to do with it, good luck and don't give up! You still have time your youngest is only a year old.

I am hoping someone posts a great, magic answer. : )

Yes...My ab wall never quite knit completely back together down the middle. When I am working my abs, instead of flexing flat and inward...I see a peak running down the middle.
