Something Positive to Share for Once =)

I wanted to share this awesome experience I had a couple of nights ago. My Husband and I decided to take martial arts class – mainly to encourage our LOs to get excited and because we realized that we could actually learn a valuable skill while getting exercise and using our mind. The one thing I did not expect was the amazing people that attend the class. These people were young, old, men, women (okay, just two woman in this class... but still), one person from almost each major race, family members, strangers, friends, etc and all of them – ALL of them treated each other with respect and kindness. I am a complete beginner and obviously a stranger and they treated me like family. It was amazing. I say this because lately it seems like there is a lot of divisiveness between the races, sexes, and generations of people. It was so nice to be enveloped in such a diverse situation where not only were our differences not an issue… the differences amongst everyone was non-existent. We were one… we were students and we were teachers =)

What can I do next?

That is great to hear and it is so good that you are doing this with your children as well.

Our daughter went through private training for her Tong So Do black belt. She trained 1 hour one on one with her guru and then one hour in the group which consisted of families, people of all ages and races. It was a small private school and like you... a good environment to learn and be with people from all walks of life!

It is positive news to hear that some schools still do this!

Really wonderful! My dearest friend loved it enough to earn her blackbelt. I've always admired this about her and I'm happy to hear it is such a positive experience for others. Thanks for sharing a positive!

That sounds like our son's judo dojo. It's a very supportive community-- the senseis and coaches really encourage the kids to introduce themselves to new students, to respect each others abilities.... and the other parents were very welcoming. I was tickled, too, that there's a fairly large Hawaiian community there (I grew up in Honolulu when I was little and have family there still) -- it felt like home.

I'm a bit confused, if you wouldn't mind clearing something up:

Are you saying this was your first experience being around a diverse group of people?

Or are you saying you are usually around a diverse group of people but they never seem to get along, and this was the first time you saw them getting along?

Or, are you saying you are usually around a diverse group of people and you never get along with them, so this is your first time you got along with them?

And I'm curious, do you get out of Georgetown much?
