Hi! My daughter is now 10 months old and yet to drink from a sippy cup. I have been trying off an on to get her to use one since she was about 6 months old. My cabinet is stocked with about 10 different ones, in hopes that she will find one she likes. She just cant figure out how to tilt the cup back to get anything out of it, and I got some with straws, but she doesnt know how to suck on the straw. Does anyone know of any good first sippy cups, or will she eventually just figure it out on her own?

What can I do next?

This might sound crazy but I taught my b/g twins to drink from actual cups starting at about 5 1/2 months. It was frustrating, but with two, I didn't want to be unable to feed them both at the same time...so, long story short - they transitioned into any type of drinking! Straws, cups, sippy cups, you name it. They are two and will sit at the table and drink from cups - even better, if they find an unguarded cup it doesn't get spilled...they just drink from it! :) I would actually recommend trying to teach them to just drink from a cup - it will be messy, but won't take long! Then, start with the sippy cup. It is backwards, but nobody is the same!

let me know how it goes.

My daughter was the same way. I actually started letting her drink out of a regular cup. Learning to sip out of a big cup kind of taught her to use the sippy. I also took the stoppers out of the sippy's to get her started. Good luck.

In my situation, my daughter just finally figured it out. We would show her by doing it ourselves. After a while she just got it and now she's almost 13 months old and no longer on the bottle and using a sippy cup like a pro. Just give her time and be consistant. She'll get it eventually!! Good luck! :-D

Try the Nuby sippy cup with the silicone top...they pop into the screw on lid and are great for helping those who can't drink from a traditional cup easily. My son used it and his feeding therapist calls it "the miracle cup". You can get them at Target, Wal-Mart, CVS and I am sure many other places. They are about $1.59 give or take, depending on where you get them.

give the cup to her first thing in the morning...every morning...that is when she is the thirstiest and most likely to take it...my daughter was cup-trained in about a week like this. (advice from her daycare teacher) and i got the nuby cups from walmart that has the hard lid...she did the best with those...the soft top ones she just chewed on...let her play with one with water in it throughout the day (water is the least messy) and she will accidently figure out how to get it out!! but the best advice is to just keep on!! good luck!!

My son didn't really take a sippy cup until he was about 12 months old. That's when I started giving him whole milk, which he loved. We used the Nuby cups too, in fact, we still have some!

I agree...Nuby! My 19 month was breastfed and he started drinking from this cup around 6 months. Does she drink from a bottle? If so, the Nuby spout works the same way as the bottle, unlike regular sippy that are hard. I wasn't blessed with being able to stay home, so when I returned to work he drank breast milk from a bottle so this might have helped him figure out the Nuby faster.

My son was reluctant to start out on a sippy cup-what helped is one kind called "Nuby" that I know they sell at Walmart. The spout is more rubbery like a bottle's nipple. Hope it works!\

kind of messy- but I never liked dealing with all the different seals and mechanisms... there are cups that just have a lid and when you take the lid off it acts like a normal small drinking cup. It has a small spout so if you hold it upside down it will drip or pour depending on how it is tilted... well if it is shaken- liquid will go everywhere. But she will get instant reward and then may try harder for the other cups.

When travelling with these cups, I found that using a little press and seal wrap around the sipping part kept the liquid inside until it was needed for drinking.

Hi Susanna
When I first decided to introduce a sippy cup to my daughter, I went out and bought one of the fancy dancy cups with handles, etc. She couldn't figure out that she had to suck on the "nipple" to get something to come out and without the spillproof thing inside the cup she would always get choked. Then I went to Walmart and bought some of those The First Years spillproof "disposable" cups. The lid looks like a regular sippy cup, but the actual holes are recessed a bit. They are not completely leakproof and it took her no time at all to figure out how to use them. They do leak so I am about to switch to one of the better cups. But maybe one of those cheap (2.50 for 4 cups) cups would be a good way to get her used to them. Hope this helps and good luck!

I used the Nuby kind with the soft top, they are kind of like a bottle but not quite. We had great success with this. They are short and stubby ones. They are great!

If you're using Avent bottles, Avent makes a "transition" thing with a sippy cup top for the regular bottles, that is very soft like a nipple, and a handle you can screw your regular bottle cap over.

This can teach her first how to hold the bottle/sippy cups herself, and then how to drink from it.

They run about six dollars and can be found at Babies R Us.

Hi Susannah,

Walmart sales a brand of sippie cups called Newby. They are sippie cups, but you have to suck on them like a bottle. The spout on these cups is soft and cushiony, and your daughter will get fluids just as if she were sucking through a bottle. With her being just 10 months old, this may be a good start for her. Good luck. I hope it helps!

If you're breastfeeding, some babies just take to the sippy cups really late.. If you're bottle-feeding, does she hold her own and tip it?

Have you tried using a Nuby cup? That's what we had the best luck with starting out.

hey.. My little one is 15 months. I had the some problem with her. There is a bottle/cup at walmart. Its a mix from a bottle and cup. Its has the handles like a sippy cup, but still has a bottle. It come with three nipples. So she can drink from a regular bottle nipple and learn to hold the bottle, like a cup. Then you can change the nipple to the one that looks like a sippy cup. She can feel the diff. and adapt to it. That really helps with my little one. And when she is ready for a cup use one with a soft drinking up. Good luck. Please let me know how it goes.
