Help with Picking a Sippy Cup or Transitioning to Cup.

Hello there, I have a 9 mo. old daughter who is a good little eater and drinks out of a bottle. I'm wondering if anyone has a sippy cup or any helpful hints on cup drinking. Our daughter doesn't really like drinking out of a sippy and gets more on her than in her mouth with a regular cup. She will drink out of the cup but don't know if it's really worth it right now. Should I just wait for the cup and stick with the bottle? I worry that she doesn't get enough water without a cup. Any ideas would be nice. Thanks.

What can I do next?

There are a few companies that make the transitioning cups. I never used them. I bought regular sippy cups and took the stoppers out of them. It takes a little while but keep working on it, like with meals or something. Wal-mart has some nice cups that are pretty cheap called nuby... their tops are similar to a bottle nipple. They don't have the spill stoppers but they won't leak everywhere either.

I have a 9 month old that I am trying to teach to drink out of a sippy cup as well. I don't have advice on a good brand, but I wanted to let you know that I talked to her dr about it at her check-up. My daughter will play with the cup and chew on it more than drink out of it. The dr said that is completely normal and to keep giving it to her and let her do whatever she wants with it, and eventually she will just drink out of it. She said by the time she is a year she will not be playing with it anymore and she will not need her bottle. Hope that helps.

We tried a soft sippy cup (Nuby you can get for under $1.00 at Wlamart) first, so it was closer to a bottle nipple. It got our daughter to get used to something bigger in her mouth. A lot of parents I know had trouble getting their child to take a hard top sippy cup. But once she starts trying to eat the top off the cup (some will, some won't - the only ones I know that did were the little boys) then try switching her to a hard top sippy. And by then, she might want to help pick one out, so take her to the baby/toddler aisle at the store and let her help. She will feel like a big girl and love her cup. I wouldn't worry though, yet if you can't get her to take a sippy, my ped. only worried if they were a year and still on the bottle.

I run a small in home daycare and have found that first time sippy cups that work great are NUBBY It has a silicone mouth piece just like a bottle but is a sippy cup only proble i have had with it is that there are no handels but that works well for some kids who hold their ouwn bottle and like the comfort feeling, also the AVENT stage 1 or what ever it is called that has handels and has the soft spout like babies are used to this is good for babies who like the handels to hang on to.
I hope this helps start slow and and she will catch on before you know it. Sometimes it just all of a sudden happens and you are so amazed.

I have found that the Nuby sippy cups work great. My daycare provider and I both use them for our children. The Nuby cups with handles leak. The ones without handles work great. My son wont put it down.

Good Luck!

I love, love, love the Avent cups. The spouts and handles also fit on the Avent bottles. I started my daughter out with handles on her bottle, then put in a spout and then to a sippy cup, but I still use the upgraded bottle when the cups are dirty.

Gerber has a nice sippy cup that has handles. My 7 month old is starting on that. Her big sister had juice in it and she (the 7 mth old) decided to pick it up the other day and start drinking. I bought them at Wal-mart. I also have the Nuby cups, but do not like the ones with the bottle top. I like the ones with the hard top that have a stopper in the lid. Hope this gives you some ideas.

My daughter never really did sippy cups, which I was glad for. I had a few, but we didn't use them as much as I tought we would. We just gave her a little cup that would fit into her hand easily, and just put a little bit in incase she spilled. She caught on fast without too much choking and we never looked back. Cups with straws work too...as long as you hold it because they're natural instinct is to tip the cup. Good luck.

Hi R.,

My eight month old is doing the same thing. We use the Avent sippy cups, and I started giving him them at four months when I started giving him solid foods.

He started out just looking at it, then started drinking from it when I gave it to him, then starting picking it up and chewing on it, and now will drink by himself when he's not throwing it on the floor.

It's not a constant thing for him either. Sometimes he'll drink out of it great for lunch and by dinner he has no idea what to do with it again. :) They're too little at this point to be consistent I've decided. :)

Don't worry, and don't be afraid to try a couple different kinds to find what works best. I have the Nuby $1.97 specials from Wal Mart too and he likes those as well. They just seem to spill more than the Avent ones I've found and I'm trying to keep the messes down as much as possible.

Also I know Avent has a handle set that's a trainer for their bottles, I don't know if you're breastfeeding or using formula, but it might be helpful to use something like that. I'm not sure if other brands have that or not. I just started using that with my son, and in the four days I've been using it he's gotten a lot more coordinated with holding things himself.

Good Luck! :)

We also used the Nuby soft spout cups - the spout is softer and more bottle like but still helps them get used to using cups. GL!

We did the transition with some juice in the Nuby sippy cups that are tall like bottles. Once my son figured it out I switched him to water, and then to the Playtex sippy cups with handles. These seem to be easy to hold and the valve stays put.

Gerber Fun Grips® Soft Starter Spill-proof Cup works the BEST!!! I use to think any "SPILL PROOF" cup was just that....SPILL PROOF! WRONG!!! My daughter use to have more on her then in her mouth like you said...and if she would throw some of the cups the stoppers would pop off and be floating inside the cup while her juice or milk would be spilling onto my floor! But then i tried these Gerber cups and it was really easy for her to catch on and now my 11month old son uses them. They can practically destroy the cup and the stopper wont come out and the cup wont leak...try it...it was a match for my kids!! Definately NOT a waste of money!!

Hello,

We transitioned with the Avent sippy cups and loved them. They have really soft nipples (is it called a nipple on a sippy cup?) and our daughter loves to kind of chew on it and suck on it while she drinks her water. It was the only she would use early one and she still loves it.

Hope this helps!

Hi R.-
We had the same problem with our daugther, the sippy we use is called Nuby. They are really inexpensive and can be found almost anywhere. The nipple of hte sippy cup is soft like the nipple of a bottle. They are still spill proof (unless you pinch the spout and turn it upside down :)) Our daughter took to it right away and they work really well!
Good Luck

When we first introduced sippy cups to our son we used the Nuby cups with the rubber spout. Once he got the hang of it we switched him to the Playtex sippy cups. The Nuby cups leak too much. The Playtex Sipsters are the best at not leaking.

My son never liked sippy cups much either. We skipped straight to the evenflow dazzler straw cups and some from playtex. They've got soft, flexible straws so your little gal won't stab herself in the face. Plus they don't spill and are insulated. Once they can drink with straws, you don't have to worry about remembering to bring a special cup everywhere you go. Most restaurants have kid cups with straws and all have regular cups and straws if you forget yours.
We started teaching him to drink from a regular cup when it was convenient (usually at meals) and he can do either like a pro now (he's 19 months)
Good luck!
