Okay, this is going to be pretty detalied.....but I'm wondering who else out there is also having these problems. I had the Mirena IUD put in 6 months ago. I feel like I'm going crazy! I was having some emotional problems also (post partum issues) and have since been put on celexa too. Both my OB and my Family Dr. told me that the hormones in the Mirena are a very low dose and unlikely causing my emotional problems. Fine. That brings me to now.. I am extremely light headed and get headaces very easily, I'm tired most of the time even though I get 7 or more hours of sleep at night, and my face has broken out (never had bad acne, not even in my teenage years) I have crazy night sweats and spotting constantly (especailly after sex, for sometimes up to 2 weeks). I know the spotting is common but come on, is it ever going to end? I'm planning on calling my OB Monday. I really think I want this thing OUT now! I have a few friends who have it and aren't having any of the issues I am (or they've subsided by now). Please let me know if you or anyone you know is expeirancing anything like this.

Thanks!

What can I do next?

While your OB/GYN and your family physician are correct by looking at the data on file with the FDA (http://berlex.bayerhealthcare.com/html/products/pi/Mirena...) - see section on Adverse Events, anyone can have ANY side effect from a drug or a medical device.

I would recommend having it taken out if you do believe it is the cause of your changes in mood, etc. I work with a lady who developed Diabetes after being on it for 6 months - does it cause Diabetes? Probably not, but the changes in her hormones are believe to have put her predisposition from heredity into diagnosable diabetes (per the Endocrinologist she visited).

I don't have a personal feeling about the product, I've just worked in the pharmaceutical industry for a decade and want to help educate people as much as possible.

Good luck.

At first I loved the Mirena because my periods were light or non-existent. But, my problems with the Mirena occurred over time, so I didn't really attribute the symptoms to the Mirena while they were happening. When I got the Mirena, my symptoms were- decreased sex drive, acne (face, neck, back), deep pelvic pain, reoccurring ovarian cysts that were quite painful, fatigue, and joint pain. I googled around and found where other women had also had similar problems. After two years, I had it removed. In the two months after it was removed, I felt so much better- the acne went away, the pelvic and joint pain subsided, etc. My doctor tried to tell me the hormones were local also, but I don't believe it to be true, esp after reading what other women have experienced. I hope this helps.

Hello,

I just wanted to put in my 2 cents. I never had emotional problems or fatigue with Mirena....but I did have the spotting problem. I had my IUD for 2 years and 3 months and I spotted a lot the whole time. I also spotted about 85% of the time after having sex and it would last up to two weeks sometimes too. I would have checked with my Dr if I had planned on keeping Mirena but after a year and half of it, we decided on no more kids and my husband had a Vasectomy so I went ahead and just got it removed last month.

When I went to get it removed my Nurse practitioner said the constant spotting wasn't normal and that she believes my IUD was too low and that might have been causing it. So that could be your problem???

Although, I think if you feel your having all those other symptoms and they aren't related to PPD then maybe it is a good idea to get it removed. From my experience the constant spotting never stopped. My sister has Mirena and didn't have any of this spotting that I had.

Hi S.---I think I would have it removed. Hormones are a very tricky thing and even though it is 'low dose', it apparently is enough to totally throw your body out of whack. The problem with any prescription drug is that, first, there are always side effects. They bother some people alot, and others cannot feel what they are doing to them. Every person is an individual, and what works for one, doesn't mean it will work for all.

Secondly, long term research implicates birth control pills (manipulating hormones) is a risk for certain cancers. If you must use them, use them for the shortest times possible.

Be sure to eat lots of fiber rich foods. Soluble fiber will remove excess estrogens from the blood stream. Excess circulating hormones again, increase the risk of hormone based cancers. Try to eat close to 50 grams per day. That means you will be eating mostly fruits, veggies, whole grains, legumes (Beans), nuts and seeds. This will help to balance those hormone leves and potentially emotional issues as well. (We all know what those hormones can do to emotions.)

I am learning these things taking a series of wellness classes taught by a Naturopath who has her PhD in nutrition. If you have any questions, I would be happy to share what I am learning. Then you can make informed decisions for yourself. I look forward to talking to you. Good luck, and don't forget, you know what is best for your body. D. ###-###-####

Sorry...I have Mirena and I never experienced any of that...I talked to quite a few friends that had it before I got it and never heard those symptoms...I got mirena because it was local and wouldn't send hormone through my system like the pill or patch so it wouldn't interfere with nursing...I do remember having bleeding for quite awhile after it was put in..and I have one other friend who experienced that as well...mirena is very low dose and local...I hope you get it figured out

I did not have the same side effects as you, but I am not a Mirena fan. Mine got "lost" inside me and they had to do exploratory surgery to find it and remove it! It was awful! I agree with everyone else to go with your instincts and have it removed if you believe it is causing problems. Good luck and God Bless!

I HATED my Mirena IUD. I thought I was going crazy with all of the symptoms I had but I googled "Mirena IUD side effects" and found tons of message boards with women complaining of horrible symptoms and side effects. I immediately had mine removed and have been symptom free since.
