Shopping on Etsy

One of the mom's on Mamasource told me about Etsy.com and I was thrilled to find this site. I placed a couple of different orders with different sellers-no problems. So, I placed an order back in early January for a custom made Minnie Mouse dress that I needed by March 1st (most Etsy sellers get the stuff to you in 2 weeks or less). Well, I still do not have it. The seller said that her child was hospitalized, so I felt horrible and was willing to go with the last minute, so long as the dress arrived in time for the party. After reading some of the feedback, it appears the seller always takes a very long time to deliver and sometimes does not deliver or misses the deadline. I'm well past the 45 days I have to file a claim with Paypal. Anyone have a bad experience with Etsy who can offer me some advice?

What can I do next?

I am a seller on ETSY too. If there is something that has to be personalized, I am VERY upfront on how long it will take to complete. I have never had any issues getting my items to the buyer. If there ever was an issue when I would not be able to deliver in the time I have stated, I would immediately contact the buyer to be sure it was ok and that they still wanted their order.

If you told her before the date you needed the dress by, she should have contacted you to let you know there would be a problem.

I have not had any issues with any of the sellers I have purchased from. They have all been really great and personable to deal with.

Try it again, maybe it was just one bad instance!
Visit my site some time. Right now it is a little sparce, but I add new things. I also do customized painting!

I just ordered something from there in January and received it within a few days. The lady that I spoke with was Norella (?). The transaction was seamless and very good. She even sent a personalized thank you note.

I would, though, feel the same way as you. I would definitely go for Plan B and demand compensation.

Oh I'm so sorry you had a bad experience with a seller on etsy. At this point I'd convo her (repeatedly -- every single day if you have to), demanding a refund since she has missed the deadline and you have no need for the dress since the deadline has been/will be missed. If that doesn't get you anywhere, send her a Paypal invoice for the exact amount you paid, once again every day if you have to, and put in the notes that it is a refund for the product she didn't deliver in the time period agreed upon. It is important to leave honest feedback on etsy (which means if it's a negative, call it a negative) so other people are warned, but you might want to wait on that till you can hopefully get your refund in hand first.

It is tough when you are possibly dealing with a situation where a vendor has a sick child, but if that's the case there should be no question she owes you a refund. Though it could also just be a story to buy time till the Paypal window is past, in which case document document document you might try talking to others who left negative feedback to see if they've had any resolution of their issues with the seller.

The Paypal window might be past, but I have heard of people still filing, just so the mark is on the person's record even if there's no chance for you to get a refund via the buyer protection they offer. Who knows, it might help someone else out in the future if dealing with similar problems with the same seller.

Good luck!

Hi GinaG - i may have recommended Esty to u - I shop on it often and love it - and I know I recommended it on mamasource before. Anyway what i would do is get your money back (easy to do with paypal) and do not do business with her / him again. it happens to everyone at some stage (happens to me on ebay a bit to)
I know it is frustrating & you are disappointed but you should complain so as it won't happen to another customer

If you paid by paypal through a credit card, you can try to do a chargeback with your credit card company. It sounds like the feedback indicates bad things about this seller, so maybe you could get somewhere with paypal anyway if you saved any documentation. Keep asking the seller to refund as well and make sure she gets the negative she deserves! Her child may be ill (or not, who knows), but if she has business to attend to, she still needed to do it and it would only take a minute for her to click a few buttons and refund you.

This happened to us on Ebay. It was a Christmas present that we ordered and it was out of stock and they said that they would mail it when it came in stock. Shortly after that the seller disappeared and we were out a chunk of money. For us it was also past the 45 days for Paypal and we called and talked to Paypal and they said there was nothing they could do. Lesson learned, if they say it will be a while take your money back.
