Seeking Taekwondo/Karate School in McKinney for Five Year Old

Hey Mamas!

I would love a school where the instructors are great with kids. A major bonus would be one that expects good behavior out of kids before they can test for their belts.

Thanks so much!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Thank you, Mamas! I have a friend who does Karate for Kids and, with the two recommendations here, I think I'll check that out. I really want to stay in McKinney.

My children also go to Karate for Kids, but in Allen. My son is 5 and daughter 8 and they love it. The instructors are wonderful with the children - kind and strict all at the same time. Good behavior is expected in class and they will redirect a child that is not acting properly. Their is a parent strip that the children can earn by completing chores and doing what they are supposed to do at home. Great incentive! My kids love getting their stripes! If my son misbehaves at home I ask him if he would speak to his teachers like that and that usually stops the behavior.

Hi J., My son has been attending Karate for Kids on El Dorado for 3 years now. He started at 5 and now at 8 he is a black belt. Mr. Morrison, the instructor, is amazing with the kids. They all love him, yet he has high expectations and gives appropriate consequences when needed. The kids have to earn what is called "the parent stripe" before testing and we decide if they have earned it. Mr. Morrison also talks a lot about values and does things at the end of class like, "Tonight you will go home and clean your room without being asked," or "After class ask you parent what they need help with." We feel that it has been worth every penny.

Have you tried Vasquez Tae Kwon Do?

White Tiger is in Allen (Main & Greenville) so it may be too far but I cannot recommend it highly enough! It has done wonders for my son with regards to focus, discipline and he absolutely loves it. I looked at several places in the Allen/Plano area and didn't get a good feel from them (either 1 hour classes or a lot of kids sitting waiting for their turn). The classes are 30 minutes each with 2 classes per week. They allow make-up classes (great in flu season). The masters are fun and they split up the kids into small groups for the training and then bring them back together for the remaining class. They make the exercises a lot of fun and have a reward chart for on-time attendance and doing extra-well in class. They also do parties such as at Halloween which is fun.

Rick's Kicks in Frisco. They are AWESOME with the kids and Rick handpicks each child to test when he sees that they are ready!
