My 5 year old daughter is interested in Karate lessons. I am totally clueless about Karate. Looking for an affordable, trustworthy, and fun place to take her after school or weekends.

What can I do next?

Dear S.,

My daughter is 17yrs old now and we both come from a big Karate family. I used to be a karate instructor when I attended New Mexico Military Institute in my youth. As you may have already discovered Karate lessons can be quite expensive. When Briana was little we tried "YOUNG OLYMPIANS" which offers both Karate and Pom & Cheer at reasonably cheap prices. You can probably find flyers in any Aurora public school at the start of every school year and after the holidays. There are classes offered at locations all through the aurora school district so it will be easy to find a location that is near your home or work that fits your schedule. Every semester they have Karate tournaments and Pom & "Cheer OFFS" too that are fun family events. When my 3yr old son is old enough I will probably have him try "YO" Karate too.

We go to United Studios. We love it. They are really great there. It seems expensive, but you get a lot for you money. Three group lessons a week and one private lesson. There are many locations around Denver. But it's been good for us. We really like it.

my son takes lessons in parker and Spirit wild Kempo - awesome place. However that looks like quite a distance for you. Many studios will let you come in and watch and also many will invite you to a free class to see if their class is a good fit for your child.
We pay 95.00 a month for classes and he goes 3 days a week. Initial sign up was a little more because it includes the gi. Then there is also a belt test charge too. Normally they belt test every 2 -3 months.

Every karate style is different too - if you get into tai kwan do that is mostly kicks - others styles are more upper body.

Hope that

S.,
I would recommend that you really investigate your options. There are many places that are out there that will take a lot of your money! We belong to a dojo, where my kids take Judo. They are very reasonable price wise, and your daughter can become involved in one of only 2 martial arts that are Olympic sports. Tae Kwan Do being the other. Judo is a rough sport, but I have full confidence that if someone tried to attack my 14 y.o. daughter, they would get a run for their money and probably wind up hurt. We are located near downtown at 719 Mariposa. I will try to attach a link to our website. We have class 2 nights a week, Monday and Wednesday from 5:30-7:00. Our children's instructors are a married couple. The husband won Gold at the 2000 Para Olympic games in Sydney, he is legally blind, and the wife won the 2008 Olympic trials for her division, however it was not a qualifying division for the actual games. Hope you can make it in. You are more than welcome to come and watch a class, your daughter can even try it out before you make any kind of commitment. If you do want to come watch some evening ask for me, I'm there a lot.

Good luck!

We go to a great Tae Kwon Doe program through the city of Aurora at the Beck rec center. It is fairly inexpensive and I think they do a great job, well organized and my kids like the instructors. The info is in the Aurora park and rec catalogue which you can pick up at any of the rec centers or pools.

S.,
I don't know about Karate, but my oldest daughter when she was 5 had taken Aikido with her Grandpa. I liked it because they taught them easy self defence moves and not just how to fight. Actually they taught them how not to fight. And everyone there was extremely nice. And when her grandpa passed away they put up a little plack in his memory. It's been a long time since we've been there but I'm sure it's still the same people and I'm sure they haven't changed and are still great with kids. Here is the name address and phone #, It is Aikido Nippon-Kan 1365 Osage St. Denver ###-###-####
