Seeking Recommendation for Carpal Tunnel Treatment

My husband has suffered from carpal tunnel for years. The family practitioner he has been seeing has not been particularly helpful. He has tried everything short of cortisone injections and surgery (compression gloves, wrist splints, NSAIDs, etc.). Has anyone had CTS and had success treating it, or can recommend a neurologist or other medical professional that might be able to treat my husband effectively? It's tough, because he is at a computer all day! Thank you!

Hi N.,

I know how painful it can be to have carpal tunnel. I highly recommend for your husband to see a chiropractor. I know of one who specializes and have treated thousands of carpal tunnel patients, and have gotten them to live better lives. His name is Dr. Michael Pangelinan. His clinic is in Studio City. I'm not sure where you live but people travel far to see him. The address is 3535 Cahuena Blvd West, Suite 208, Los Angeles, CA 90068. His number is ###-###-####. Don't wait another minute. Good luck!

Hi N. -
Have you heard of Myofascial Release? This is a drug free, hands-on treatment that is excellent for treating chronic pain (carpal tunnel included!). If you are interested in learning more about it check out this website - it has a good explanation of what MFR is and how & why it works:

If you are interested feel free to e-mail me at ____@____.com I know some experienced and excellent practitioners.
:)
Have a great day,
A.

Hi N.,
I have not had CTS as severe as your husband but I do have sensitive wrists. My acupuncturist told me that cortisone shots actually weaken the joints so I would not advise those. Here is the name of an acupuncturist in Toluca Lake: Catherine Aquino ###-###-#### www.aquinotcm.com or www.tcmaquino.com. Can't remember which website. Also, many people say that acupuncture is a hoax or not proven. Acupuncturists have been considered primary care physicians in the state of California since the 1970-s and acupuncture is part of traditional chinese medicine. Lastly, acupuncturists do complete four years of training same as medical school students.the approach is more holistic, the needles don't hurt and the the body recharges itself. My health has greatly improved since I began seeing Dr. Aquino over two years ago. Keep in mind that changes in diet as well as regular massages may be needed. Lifestyle changes are essential to total body wellness. Good luck to you both:)

Hi N. - I am an occupational therapist and ergonomic evaluator. The first thing I suggest is for your husband to go to a specialist, specifically a hand surgeon. They will get the right type of tests to give him a definitive diagnosis and also see the extent of nerve damage. Before getting surgery, he may benefit from conservative treatment with an occupational therapist (OT) who specializes in treating upper extremities. You want to be sure the OT is a Certified Hand Therapist (CHT). Hopefully your husband can avoid surgery, but if not, know that carpal tunnel release surgery is more and more common and very successful for most. Be sure to research the physicians and do not go to someone unless they are hand specialists. Don't go to just any neurosurgeon or orthopedist. Also, ask around, maybe you know someone who had the surgery and was happy with their doctor. Alternative therapies, like myofascial release, craniosacral therapy, or accupuncture have also been found to be helpful, but in my humble opinion work best in conjuction with standard medicine.
Also important is to find out what may have caused this in the first place. You said your husband is at a computer all day - he is probably not sitting in a good chair and/or not using proper ergonomic work habits and techniques. Ask him if his workplace has an ergonomic specialist who can assess him.

Good luck!
