So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for all you advice! We are making great progress she is starting to go poop in the potty more often. When ever she does we do the big girl dance and she gets a sticker (that ends up on the door). She is on her way!!!

I had the same problem with my little girl. She is 3 1/2 years old. She was almost three before I found something that worked. This is what worked for me. I have weekend of from work so I decided one weekend that I would not put any pull ups on her all weekned until she went to bed. So the first day I put panties on her when she woke up. She did pee a few times in the panties but the funny part was that as soon as she realized that I was not going to put the pull ups on she started to go. And the second day she pooped for the first time in the potty. So we gave her a little potty party with a few balloons and cake. She has not had a problem sense.

I hope this helps!!

Don't despair! She will go when she is ready. Just keep her potty chair in the bathroom with the big people's toilet and she will eventually use it herself. She already knows how and just needs to decide on her own when she is ready to take the next step. I'ts just like walking.....she will see everyone else doing it and want it for herself. Don't push this, that is very important, no guilt trips or anything like that. The celebration is a great idea as well as the pretty underwear she can wear once she has had success.

I had the same problem but with my BOY, I potty trained my daughter in ONE day only, and since then I didn't have any problems at all !!! I used the Dr. Phil's book on How to potty train your daughter in one day and it worked... I think girls are easier because you can always buy the cute underwears and they do care about that !! boys are not. But the way that my daughter learned is teaching one of her dolls how to go, and then because she used to loved Barney, after she did it Barney (my husband) called her on the phone and we had bought some Barney hats and Barney things (like for a Birthday party) and everytime that she went to the bathroom we had a celebration. But I did everything in one day only !!! Good luck !!

Im going through the same as you. I just bring my 2 yr old to the potty after she has gone in her pull up. I show her where she needs to go. I also watch to see when she has to poop then try to catch her and place her on her potty. It seems to help. She goes now, mostly on her own. There are still times she does have an accident, but Just have patience and show her the right way and you'll do fine. Yes, Its frustrating..lol I spend up to a half and hour with her in the bathroom and it is always when it's bedtime too. Good luck!

I am also the mother of a 2 1/2 yr old girl and going through the same thing. My pediatrician recomened me to stop trying to potty train her for a few weeks and then try again. SHe said kids can get frustrated and give up and then not be interested anymore. Try giving it a week or two and then try again, that is what I am doing, I'll let you know if it works!

If you child knows when she needs to use the bathroom then my advice would be to take the pull-up off and have her wear regular undies... when she has an accident it is more appartent, and uncomfortable to her, therefore she will naturally try harder on her own to make it to the toilet.

In my opinion Pull-ups are only good for 2 things.... overnight protection and long trips in the car. The only way to potty train is to do it the way our parents did it with us... without pull ups.

other sujestions
*set a timer every to every 30 mins to remind your child to try to use the potty
* always ask child if they need to BM while they are at the potty
*keep an eye on the child during play for tell tale signs that she maybe soiling herself. (i.e. squatting in corner)and correct her by setting her on the toilet.

remember to be patient and kind during this process, we are already potty trained they are not. And they need to be ready to be trianed its not something you should force, it will only make the process even more fustrating and MESSY.

Good Luck
M.

Even though I don't have a little girl I think my advice might help you. First, you shouldn't buy pull up. Get the training underwear(they sell them at wallmart). Pull ups are just another diaper. I also had a lot of help from my sons day care. When we were home I would bring him to the bathroom probably every 1 to 2 hours. You have to pay attention, they wil get extremely quiet and go somewhere private to try and poop, thats when I would run him to the bathroom so that he can see that it's supposed to go in the toilet. I also got up in the middle of the night, probably 3 times to bring him to the bathroom. He eventually got the hang of it and started to go on his own. I hope I helped a little

I also have a 2 1/2 yr old little girl who is so stubborn!!!! I had her pooping and peeing on the potty for like two weeks straight then all of a sudden she went right back to diapers. She says she has to go to the bathroom and when she gets to the bathroom she sits on the potty and then gets off without doing anything saying she is all done. She doesn't want me changing her diapers but yet she refuses to use the potty. Sometimes I think she is doing it on purpose. I am frustarated because the things that worked for my son are not working for her and I still have the baby in diapers!! So if you find anything that works please let me know !! thanks!

Leave the pull-up off, even if you just put pants on her no underwear. You'll see how much more she will go on the toilet when she doesn't have the pull-up on. Especially when she has to poop, when my son was training he would NEVER poop anywhere but in the pull-up or the toilet. He still wears a pull-up to bed but besides that he goes all day on the potty. Try it and see how it works for you, she may have some mistakes but you would have to deal with that anyway.

Hi T.,
Potty training my daughter was alittle rough. I wanted her to be potty trained before she actually was. I was living with my step-mother at the time and she kept pressuring me. So you need to know not force her, if she is not ready. I used to take my daugter into pee with me even if I didn't have to go. Pooping took a little longer. Does she have her own underwear? I would buy my daughter care bears or dora underwear and try and tell her that she wouldn't want to pee on the care bears or dora. I know my dad gave me silky underwaer when I was little and I guess once you pee in silky underwear its a feeling kids don't like. I guess it worked on me. Does she have her own potty? Maybe give her incentives for after she does go pee in the pot and maybe make it a big deal when she does go? I hope I have been some help. Please let me know how things went.Good Luck!

Hi I too have a 2 1/2 yr old girl. I have found out that is it easier to potty train using regular underwear. Pull ups act too much like diaper and absorb all the wetness. If she pees or poops in her pants make her wear them for two and 1/2 minutes before you change her. I have found out that this works extermely well

Sounds like you lucked out with your boys, she is still very young. Let her go at her own pace. I've had some trained by age 2, some not by 4.

I went through this about a year and a half ago. Most of the mom who have responded have it right by saying, get rid of the pull ups. My daughter wasn't very consistent so I did two major things. 1st, we planned a few days when we stayed home. I kept her in areas of the house with hard floors and brought her potty in with her where ever she was. Then off came everything from the waste down. When I spotted her starting to do something, we would move quickly to the potty. If it looked like she had to poop, I put the potty in front of the tv and made her sit on it to watch tv. After 2 days I put on the panties and the next day she was going to daycare with all her clothes on. After a few accidents with pee, she was able to go on the potty with no problems. For us, poop was harder. For that she had a few accidents in her panties but after 4 more days, she had that mastered too. You have to be sure she is ready because if not, this might work but you will have accidents for much longer.

Hi T.,
Your situation sounds just like mines. My 2 1/2 yr old girl is doing the potty training thing now, too. Here are a couple of things i tried to do that helps me deal with the pullup situation...
1. Being that she tries to do everything she see me doing, I never used the potty chair. Instead I bought the Dora mini-seat that you put on the toilet seat, as well as the lil' step stool (toys-r-us).

She took to this much quicker because she already knew that Mommy makes a peepee in the "Big Girl Potty", allowing her to see me repeat the process of:
2. wipe the "monkey" with the tissue and
3.flush it.... then...
4. bye peepee/poopoo (waving in the toilet) bye, bye...

5. Normally follow a lil happy song and of course dont forget
6. the stickers(using this method of only giving her stickers, that i got from Staples, when she makes it in the potty).
Most imporantly,
7. I really emphasis wearing panties.
Only use the pullups during knap time or when she's down for the night.

IF she makes a mistake and goes on herself, you can emphasis how that is a no no and how a big girl like mommy goes to the potty and let her know that she won't be getting any stickers...
Trust me they want the stickers
I usually put one on the back of each hand, allowing her to do what she wants to with them. The clean-up is worth it if she's getting the picture.

It more about us as mothers and about being consistant and disciplined when it comes to emphasizing to her how important the "Big Girl" things are.
Good Luck and Stay Strong, It'll come...

T., wow u have ur hands ful! I used to get really frustrated trying to potty train my grls. and u know what?? When she is ready she will do it. I used to ask every hr or put them on potty every hr. When they did go, it sounds silly but we clapped and sang yah!! pp in the potty!! lol! Tell her what a big grl she is and I used to take them out for lunch or something special and tell them that big grls go on the potty! When it came to pooping :) we used to say yahhhhhhh and watch it flush down the hopper and say what a bigggg grl. I found out that with praise you can get alot done quicker and with less headache. Good luck & she will get it they all do :) R.

I can't give you advice but I can tell you I'm having the same problem with my daughter who will be three next week. First off is it just me or are pull ups turning out to be just more expensive diapers? its driving me crazy we go through pullups quicker and they cost more money. If its any consolation my aunt is the mother of six girls and her youngest is four and at three just suddenly said mom im ready to go on the potty so i think when they are ready they are ready so hang in there .....

I have a 3 1/2 year old girl. She was very stubborn and enjoyed her pull-ups and diapers. She seemed like she was potty trained for a while then right around the time I had my 8 month old girl she stopped. The pediatrician said to wait until after the baby and then go a-la-natural! I was so scared I kept thinking poop and pee everywhere with a newborn he is out of his mind!!!! But I was at my whits end and tried it. It actually worked. She peed once on her self and that was enough for her. So, try it, it doesn't hurt. Poop can be a little more difficult. Although my daughter never had an accident with number 2 I can't say for yours. Hope it all works out. Good Luck

my suggestion is simple: take her out of the pull-ups. being a toddler teacher, i see this a lot. a lot of kids see the pull-up as a diaper and why waste time peeing in the potty when you can just go in the diaper? when this happens, i've had great success with just removing the pull-up and using underwear. when an accident does happen, make the child clean up the mess (obviously helping when needed). the child won't like to be wet or dirty and won't like to clean up yucky messes.

y daughter was the same way. Sometimes she would take the pull up off and poop in her room :( I started having her wear "big girl" panties and awarded her with treats, stickers, when she went on the potty and slowly she was potty trained
