My lil man needs to wear glasses. His right eye is really bad. He is 5 years old. Yesterday, I took him to pick out glasses. He picked out two pairs. One was green and one is gray. I need to teach him how to put them on and off and how to care for them. He is going to need this fulltime everyday. How can I interest him in wanting to wear them? I googled eyeglass accessories and found solid and sport cases. He is more like super hero and star wars kid. Is there a cool accessory I can get him? I was wondering if I should buy a strap for them so they dont fall off and break. I am nervous thinking about him skateboarding or playing football and his glasses hurt his eyes. Any ideas would be awesome.
Thank you everyone. My and dad agree to stand firm with wearing and caring for them. We allowed him to pick out a strap and this cool looking guy that holds the glasses for his night stand. We pick to glasses up next week. For now we are talking alot about them. He is interest, which is great. Again thank you!
they should be scratch resistant, polycarbonate and bendable frames.
Does he have to wear them for sports? sometimes they don't and if playing football should be wearing goggles over them.
Walmart has eye glass cases with sports theme.
Honestly don't make a fuss, tell him he needs to wear them all the time.

I work at lenscrafters and deal with the issues of young children wearing glasses. do they have cable temple or are they adjusted properly? If you want him to wear them outside then i would do some sports goggles for him. they are more durable for outdoor activity and they have a strap on them. once he starts wearing them and sees how much better his vision is he will probably wear them. make sure he takes them on and off with two hands and tell him when they are not on your face put them in the case. you want to make sure he keeps them in the case to cut down on mishaps with them such as siblings messing with them or dogs chewing them. I had a little girl who took hers off set them next to the trash can outside. the dog chewed them,dropped them and the dad mowed them with the lawnmower. they brought the glasses to them in pieces. let me know if you need any other advice or have any other questions.
Many, many moons ago, when I was in Kindergarten, I got my first pair of glasses. Light frosty blue frames--what a fashion statement!
Proud to say that I took very good care of them, never broke them or lost them ALL without any special gadgets for kids! LOL
Just wanted to suggest a strap for sports and possibly a cool place to put them by his bed. I've seen really cute little animal head statues that "wear" the glasses at night. Then they're handy for him in the morning when he wakes up.
Oh--don;t be surprised if he tries looking over or under the glasses for the first few weeks. He'll adjust. I'm a sucker for a kid in glasses--how adorable!
Our eye doctor said to not let my daughter wear her glasses while doing sports when she was that age. He said as long as she didn't need them to see close up, it was better not to wear them. So she took them off and left them with me or a responsible adult. At first she only used them when doing school, reading or watching television. Eventually she did need to wear them all the time, but by then she had gotten used to taking care of them.
Be sure to get the most flexible sturdy frames available. Kid's lenses are made pretty well to be light weight and break resistant. Also I would recommend a place that has a replacement warranty, even if you have to pay some to get it. With a kid that young, it will really pay off to have a warranty. Even if he is very careful, something will happen to his glasses. We replaced my dd's first pair four times.
Another daughter had her glasses chewed by the dog three times. The first time is was her fault, but the second time, the dog really went out of her way to get to the glasses. Must have acquired a taste for them!
My son got his first fulltime pair of glasses a year ago. He had just turned 7, so he is a bit older than your son. It hasn't been that big of a deal. I am not sure wear you bought them or what they offer there. But my son's came with a 1 year warranty against breakage and with anti-scratch coating. They lasted about 11 months before they broke. But I believe with boys, that is almost inevitable.
I am not sure what you can do to make them more appealing to your son. But my then 4, now 5 year old was asking for a piar when my other 2 got them last year. I may not be that much of a problem.
As far as sports and such. My son is very active and very involved in several sports. 2 eyewear places told me to just let him use his regular glasses because the sports ones weren't worth it. Especially since at this age their eyes are changing so much. I am still on the fence about them. I may just get them at his next exam in a month. From what I've seen they cost a little over $100. I think that it is worth it if your son does a lot of sports. I figured even if hs eyes change a bit, he can still wear them during sports a little longer. It would be way better then no glasses.
Hi M., First off, he will want to wear his glasses once he figures out how much better he can see with them on! Don't worry about dressing them up...they need to be functional! A strap for when he is outside playing hard is a good idea, my brother wore one when he got his first pair (I think he was 6 or 7 at the time). The biggest challenge is keeping them clean! Teach him how to wash them with soap and water (warm water) and how to dry them with a towel, never use paper towels or kleenx! You also need to teach him to take them off and on with BOTH hands. I hope you got the kind with flexable hinges (they don't bend out of shape as easily). It is really important to have a firm matter-of-fact attitude about him wearing and caring for his glasses. Don't turn them into a game or something to fight over. There are millions of people all over the world that have glasses or contacts and it's really no big deal! Best wishes.
