Comfortable & Durable Eyeglasses for a 4 Year Old Boy ( to Wear at Preschool )

Thanks for reading my question.

My 4 year old boy was recently diagnosed with accomodative esotropia and astgmatism. He will require to wear eyeglasses all the time. He is a cheerful, active boy who goes to preschool from 8:30 am to 5 pm.
He will have to wear them for 8 hours at preschool; so comfort and durability are very important criteria. I am so worried that he will end up refusing to wear eyeglasses if they are not comfortable enough to wear for long hours.

Do you have any recommendations, brands, styles, experience that could help?

Thanks in advance.

I just got my 4 year a pair of Flexon at Kaiser for about $189 total for lens and frames. They work fine, she wanted the princess ones but the clerk said it didnt fit her well because it didnt have those two little rubbler posts. My daughter got use to them fast. I went to Costco and saw kid ones for just under $100 total for both frames and lens. I would have gotten them at costco if I had known but I was so shocked by her needing them in the first place that I didnt even shop around. Good luck!

We had to get glasses for my daughter when she was 2 1/2. We looked all over the Bay area and were so thankful when we found Solo Bambini in Burlingame (http://www.solobambini.com/) -- it's definitely worth the drive. They focus on kid's glasses and have a bunch of different kinds and will work with you to find what's right for your son. The kind that we have are so lightweight and comfortable that she hardly notices them on. Now, two years later, she asks for them to be on becuase she knows that she can see better with them.

Good luck!

Solo Bambini is the brand that our son has. They are flexible, and my three-yr-old son has never broken them. Also, they are so cute!

I got my first pair when I was his age (astigmatism + near-sighted). They'd have children's glasses which are pretty comfortable, durable, and cute at the optometrist's or even in a Wal-Mart supercenter. My last pair before these were Flexons. They were pretty comfortable and lasted about five years before I absolutely had to get a new pair (broke in the middle). They were adjustable, so I was able to keep them from sliding down my nose every five seconds.

My glasses have always been pretty durable. Each of my three previous pairs survived about four to six years with just a few scratches despite having an accident prone, tomboyish owner who was in PE and had to wear them almost all the time. My cousin's daughter and friend's son got glasses pretty early on.

Any good eyeglass place doctor or just a place that makes glasses will be the best to help with this. What is comfortable for one person won't necessarily be comfortable for someone else. I usually have to go back once or twice to get mine adjusted before they fit comfortably. For kids I recommend you go somewhere that offers a one year warranty for any rweason (walmart does this) and also the frames that are flexible/bendy.

solo bambini. they have a website, and they're not very expensive. My son wears these, and this pair of frames he has had for over a year. He is 4 and very active. They are extremely durable and quite cute! Best of luck!

You know, a LOT of the kids here in NYC wear the "sports" glasses (found at any eyeglass center). They almost look like safety glasses, but the kids think they are super-cool!

A little guy who comes to play with my grand daughter now and then, wears glasses. He has since he was about a year old and the best thing his parents did is they bought a safety strap. or "croakies" for him. It sure helps him to run, jump, and play hard without worrying about his glasses falling off.

Sears, has a whole line of glasses just for kids.
Maybe go there and check it out.
They can help you and make recommendations and adjust it etc.

My youngest has astigmatism also, and has to wear glasses all the time. We first bought her an expensive pair (Disney princess), which she scratched horribly and then "lost." So then I went to Walmart and bought her 2 pairs there (the combined price was less than the price of the expensive first pair). I think the key is how the glasses are fitted. The lady at the Walmart optical center took her time and made sure the glasses had the proper angle over my daughter's ears, and apparently they are super comfortable, because my little one even wants to wear them to bed! My recommendation is not to get anything expensive, because kids being kids, will scratch them, drop them, throw them out the car window, etc. For the same reason, I wouldn't bother with the expensive treatments (anti-scratch, anti-glare, etc). Just plan on getting them to last for 6 months, and if they last longer, great. Definitely let him choose which glasses he wants, and do get 2 pairs (maybe one for his room, one for his backpack, so you are never without them). They do have some really cute styles for kids these days. Better than when we were kids!

My youngest daughter has been in glasses since she was 9 months old. After going through multiple kinds with our older daughter we were extremely pleased to find Miraflex for kids. Not all places carry them and honestly they are not the most beautiful glass but they do come in different colors and shapes. They are extremely durable and we love them! Our baby is almost 2 and she is still wearing the same original frames (although we're ready for a new color!). ;-) Good luck!
