Seeking Great Pediatrictian in Close-In Portland

My family and I recently moved to Portland and we're still looking for a great pediatrician. We had been taking our 18 month-old daughter to Metropolitan Pediatrics in NW, and while they're fine, they still have that hospital atmosphere. Are there any quaint pediatric offices in town? It seems like all the doctors have their offices in one of the major hospitals, and I would like to take my daughter to a smaller office with a more relaxing atmosphere. I would appreciate any recommendations.

Thanks,

J. and Lyra

We love our Pediatrician, George Bengston Jr. He practices at the Broadway Medical Clinic in the Hollywood District. I think there are 4-5 other peds in his group. I have friends who see Dr Heffernan and another who sees Dr DeSimone at Broadway. Both families love their DRs too. My OB sends his children to Dr Bengston and that is how we were referred to him. DR Bengston has four children ranging in ages 4-13. I feel that makes him an even better ped to be in the thick of parenting, as well as, a DR.

My grandchildren, ages 3 and 6 go to the Broadway Clinic at 4212 NE Broadway. They see Dr. Mary Lee Baker. She's probably in her 40's or 50's, very outgoing, cheerful and caring. She wears street clothes. My grandchildren love her. They also like going to the clinic because they have a play structure that looks some like a house, toys, and an aquarium in the waiting room. They can climb in the house and look out windows.

The clinic itself is relatively small and is in what looks somewhat like a plantation house. It's front is brick and has white columns. They have 19 doctors, 8 of whom are pediatricians.

My daughter and I both have doctors there. I highly recommend it.

If you are looking for a naturopath I could give you a couple of names, but sorry, no MD's or DO's that I know have quaint non-hospital atmosphere. Best of luck in your search.

We take our five month old daughter to the Broadway Medical clinic on NE 42nd. Funky, friendly physician owned building. Our daughter sees Dr. Basco, but we've been happy with all the docs who looked after her from Broadway right after she was born.

I work in the local hospital ER, and I can tell you who some of the most popular DRs are. George Benston is great, though it might be tough to get in to him since he seems to be so darn popular! :). Molly Moran-Yandle is also great, but my personal favorite happens to come from your own Pediatric Associates NW. Dr Jack Schunk has taken care of my kids from the beginning, and through many health scares. His compassion and caring, as well as his ability to make me feel he is available to me 24/7 is very comforting. I know this may be too much info to sort through, but I do believe in finding the right pediatrition for your kids and you.

I also take my 21 mo daughter to Broadway Medical Group. Her doctor is Dr. Coughlin and we love him. He's very patient and kind and supportive of my decisions and input regarding my daughter's health. Good luck in your search!!

Welcome to Portland! We just moved here a year ago and have a great family practice that we go to in the NE. It is called Portland Family Practice on NE 20th Ave at Sandy and it certainly does not have a hospital atmosphere. Our Dr. is Dr. Molly Moran- Yandle, but we have seen 2 other Dr.s in that office and they were wonderful too. I would highly reccomend them.

Good luck,
L.

My sons pediatrition is Monique Pritchard, with the Sellwood OHSU clinic....they are moving closer to Powell in November, so going through some changes. Also, I am not sure if Monique herself is taking any new patients, but the overall staff and atmosphere is just what you are looking for. I chose Monique because of her holistic approaches....I had a waterbirth, still nurse my 17 month old, and chose minimal vaccinations. The clinic will be larger fwith the move, but they promise for the small, quaintness of the visit rooms, and the relaxed atmosphere. Pritchard is my favorite....seems the most informed to me. HOpe I could help!!!
