Hi-

We're looking for a good pediatrician in SE or SW Portland for a toddler -- hopefully where someone will be available after hours & on weekends so don't have to go to ER.

Thanks.

OHSU on the SW side has some great doctors. You can go on their website and hand pick which doctor you want. I was so happy to find someone who had a degree from Harvard with an emphasis on holistics. The clinics are located near the south waterfront in Portland.

I see someone suggested metropolitan Pediatrics. They also have an office in NW Portland in a professional building connected with Good Sam. They are great.

I was just on the hunt & you can read the recommendations that I got from my previous post regarding the SW side. I settled on Sunset Pediatrics & though we've only been with them for month now, I am very pleased! We had to deal with an illness 2 weeks ago & they got him seen on a Saturday right away! I see Dr. Knapp there. Good luck!

I know that what people want in a pediatrician varies but my son (2.5 yrs)and I love Monique Pritchard. She practices at Sellwood Medical Clinic. She doesn't have weekend hours (she is a parent too so I appreciate that she sets time aside for her family) but she is great. She always makes me feel like I am doing a good job parenting, she listens well to my concerns and addresses them and she stays on top of current health issues. I highly recommend her.

Pediatric Associates of the NW has two offices: NW 25th and Lovejoy, and off of Kruse Way. Most of the doctors work alternate between offices. They are open on weekends for emergency appointments. Our Dr. is Schunk, who has been great with all kinds of advice (health and behavioral) and I have also seen some of the other doctors when he is not available. All have been great. You might want to check out their website.

Also I have heard that Dr. Prichard in Sellwood is good.

I strongly recommend that you narrow it down to 3 or so options that seem to fit your needs (hours, location etc) and then see if you can schedule an informational meeting with the doctors before you make your decision. You'll want to make sure the Dr's personality and philosophies (immunizations, developmental issues, etc) are a good fit for you. Many drs will schedule an appointment of this nature before or after office hours. In my opinion, the Dr. should want to make sure it's a good match as much as the parent does.

My two-year-old son sees Dr. Michael Ericksen at Sunset Pediatrics. They are located in the St. Vincent Medical Plaza area off of Barnes Road. My son absolutely loves him. We recently moved and have seen him twice for an ear infection. My son never cried when he examined him. He's very gentle and knowledgeable. They are open Saturdays and have extended hours on the weekdays. I've been very impressed with them so far.

Hope that helps.

Olsen Pediatrics in Lake Oswego is fantastic (not sure how convenient that location is for you?) We have been with them for 7 years and love all the pediatricians in the office. They are open until 9pm and have hours on the weekends. In their off hours, there is always a pediatrician on-call who will meet you at the office or ER if needed. They are an amazing group of doctors. You can chose one primary doctor and then if you need to visit and your doc isn't available, you can see another one in the office. Most of my girlfriends take their children there as well. Highly recommend by my 3 kiddos....they always get excited to see Doctor Palmer!

Sunset Pediatrics, they're the best. They're open on Saturdays, and are available anytime after hours for phone calls.

They have four doctors now in their practice, and I've actually seen all of them, and they are all exceptional.

They are located in St. Vincents hospital.

East Portland Pediatric Clinic is where we take our kids. I love Dr. Davis but all the docs are really good there. They have some after hours appointments but the best is the nurse advice line, you can talk to a nurse to help decide what you need to do. It was a real live saver when I was a new mom and every cold and cough seemed really scary.

Monique Pritchard is wonderful. She is respectful of parents and is willing to have a collaborative relationship with her patient's parents. If you are considering having a different vaccination schedule or not vaccinating you will not be met with disrespect or contempt.

Naturopathy is a great choice as well. I like Ed Hoffman Smith at Natural Childbirth and Family clinic in NE Portland. Naturopaths have a scope of practice that includes allopathic medicine, plant medicines and homeopathy.

Hi, I don't know when you'd use the emergency room except for bleeding or dying, but urgent care facilities are around and are much more economical and any wait is shorter. If you want to keep costs down for the short term and long term, try doing naturopathic or homeopathic care. Much cheaper in the long run and many will work carefully around appropriate immunizations for your child. Trust your childs' immune system and support it. Naturopathic and homeopathic medicine is great and supports without suppressing the immune system; even with challenging diseases. Good luck! Oh, and my kids go to an acupunturist (LAc) and don't get accupunture but the herbs and pills and acupressure to support them through problems with their health. It works just fine.

I'm not sure if it is to far for you to travel to the Metropolitan Pediatrics. They are located right off Hwy 26 & Bethany right on Cornell road next to Krispy Kreme doughnuts. I have had nothing but good luck with that practice. Our doctor is Dr.Gweneth Neace. They have, I believe six different doctors in their practice. I have seen almost each one. We have been with them for over 14 years now. My daughter is 14yrs, my son is 10yrs, and my youngest son is 16 months. One of the reasons I love their office is they offer Urgent appts. on Sat & Sun.
Good Luck with your search!!!!

Pediatric Associates of the Northwest - Dr. Jack Schunk. We met him before our twin boys were born and have been thrilled with their care. They are available on weekends and the advice nurses are outstanding. He is located in Lake Oswego and downtown NW. He is absolutely great with kids.
