Rsv Help????????
Both of my children ages 32mths and 20mths was diagnosed with RSV the first of Feb. We started off doing just Albuterol breathing treatments. After about a week, they seemed to both be better. Then my oldest starting running low grade fevers having a real deep tight cough, and mucus everywhere. Her Dr gave her some Zithromicin and she seemed better. The youngest got worse and was given the same antibotic along with adding Pulicort to their breating treatments. They both have finished their antibotics and I dont see much if any improvement in them. The only thing is that they arent running fevers. They are coughing so hard that they are either choking or they make theirselves vomit. They cant sleep at night for coughing, and they sound horrible!!!! Thier dr says that they have taken all the cough medicine off the market because it didnt work, but surely there is something. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!

My son just recently had a horrible cold turned respiratory infection (with the worst sounding cough). The only things I found that helped was rubbing Vicks on his feet, and running a warm steam humidifier in his room at night. I don't know how the Vicks on the feet works, but it does help quite a bit. My doc also said that I could give my son Benadryl which helps as an antihistamine, and can assist with all the mucus production (it also helps them sleep). Also, for the humidifier, the pediatrician emphasized that you have to wash it out completely every day. Otherwise, bacteria can start to reproduce and make the situation worse.
I hope they start feeling better soon!

You might want to ask your doctor how long he/she thinks the cough will last. My 3 1/2 month old daughter was also diagnosed with RSV at the first of February. She is much better now, however her pediatrician originally told us that her cough could last for weeks or even months.

hi G.. my daughter had rsv when she was two weeks old and was in the hospital for a week because of it. her oxygen sat was low... which was why we were there a while. but once we were home, her cough quickly dissipated. on another note, however, my son had a cough that lasted 10 or 12 weeks last fall. it was awful, none of the cough meds worked, and eventually we started flovent and albuterol. what i think cured him was a strong dosage of orapred (for 5 or 10 days) combined with two weeks of albuterol (the rescue inhaler) on a regular basis. we found the doctors at duke very helpful. i would just check with your pediatrician to see how long it can last and perhaps ask for the orapred to 'reset' their systems. it is a long night when your kids can't sleep and you are up worrying about them. hang in there.

I would consider getting a second opinion. They have to be able to give them something for the coughing. My kids have always been given a cough medicine (I think M-End-DM). It may not help completely, but it's a start. RSV can be pretty serious. If you don't feel that your dr is giving the best advice I would definitely try another.

G., I feel your frustration!! My little one who is 28 months has had RSV every year since she was born, starting when she was only months old. This year was just as bad but we contined to use the breathing treatments for 2 weeks, every 4 hours. That seemed to take care of it, but if nothing is working I would take my child to the nearest children's hospital. Good luck and you will be in our prayers.
