Removing Pet Odor from Rug
I have a 12-year-old dog who had several accidents on our rug the other night. I was able to remove all of the stains but I can't get the pee odor out of the rug. I used a pet odor and stain remover but the odor is still there. A neighbor recommended vinegar. I sprayed some onto the area but no luck. Before I run out to get a rug cleaner, I was wondering if anyone has any different ideas or products that have worked well. The smell is gross and the rug is new. Thanks.

We have 2 dogs and 2 cats. Have had good luck with Anti Icky Poo spray. Sounds ridiculous but works beautifully. Don't forget to treat the pad for the rug and the floor beneath. The stain below is usually 2-3 times larger than what you see on the carpet. http://www.antiickypoo.com/
Good Luck,

I also have a 12 year old dog who"leaks" on our rug. Nature's Miracle worked with the smell. You have to saturate the rug with it - follow the directions - the dog will keep coming back to the same spot because of the smell. I would also get the dog checked at the vet. Our dog takes pills now that stops the accidents - when they get older (esp. fixed females) they have a hard time holding it in (much like older humans!!) These pills have worked very well - so much so, if we forget to give her a couple of doses, we notice her dribbling or a full blown accident.
Good luck!

Try Nature's Miracle. You can purchase it at most pet stores. It has worked for us in the past. It has enzymes in it that neutralize the urine. I think it is the best product out there and we have tried many over the years.

Hi! Have you tried using Totally Toddler (found at Baby's R Us/Toys R Us)? It is really a solution to use for children if they have an accident or throw up, etc., but it does work pretty well for other odors too. I doesn't smell too great itself, and it needs a week or so to "go away," but the end result is great. Also, there's a product I found at K-Mart called "Kids and Pets." It's a rug cleaner, non-toxic, found in the normal rug product area. You have to use a lot to saturate the rug and it will need about 24 hours to dry, but this product works great and smells nice too (I put the solution in a spray bottle to cover an area better). Hope these ideas help....good luck. :-)

I would buy Nature's Miracle and find yourself a black light, preferably a wand type. Natures Miracle used to make one specifically for this but it doesn't have to be that brand. If you go over the entire rug with the black light you will find where there might be dried urine that you can't see (it glows). You will have to soak the area(s) a number of times with the enzymatic solution (Nature's Miracle) because you have used other products that will affect it's ability to work. Allow them to dry before reapplying. You will also need to use enough so that it will spread the same way the urine did into the pad and sub flooring. I've not found anything that works as well.
Not fun but better than ripping the rug up!
Good luck,

You may have to soak the rug. Poor half vinegar and half water onto the carpet and let it soak through. Then use a towel and stomp on it to soak as much as you can up. Spraying will only get the top part wet when the urine probably soaked through to the matt underneath and perhaps the wood floor or cement (depending on what is underneath). Is there anyway to pull just that part of the rug up so you can clean it well and let it dry completely?

sprinkle baking soda over the area and work it into the rug, let it set 24 hours and vacuum it up. It has worked for me.
Good Luck.

You need to get something that has enzymes in it, they will eat the odor instead of just covering up the smell for a short time. you may need to do this several times in order to get it all gone, we had bought from home depot about a 85$ rug spotter, that works well for extracting stuff from carpets etc. I would advise against vinegar or ammonia based products it can do the opposite by attracting the dog to urinate in the same spot, the other option is to rent a rug doctor from the supermarket or hardware store, Good Luck!!
