Hi All:

So we have this ferrel/wild cat that lives on our property. He/she lived here before we moved in and has been no trouble up until now. He/she got in the house yesterday and piddled in the corner of my living room floor on our brand new carpet. It smells horrible. I think she might have sprayed, but I am not really sure what the even means? My mom mentioned it? I am afraid that if I put the wrong cleaner on it I will only make it worse. I really don't want to pay a professional service to come out for one small spot? Know any home remedies or tricks that might help? Thanks.

So What Happened?

WOW! So many terrific ideas. Thanks to everyone! I guess I must be the last person alive to hear of "Natures Miracle"! LOL I would guess that 80% of you suggested that! So yes, I went to PetCo and I believe that it worked. I wanted harwood and hate that we chose carpet in this room...but it's done. We plan to hire a professional cleaner every 6 months. So hopefully the pros will pick up any left over smell and stain. idk? I was afraid to put peroxide on my carpet. I think it might bleach the color? But I did like the idea of the vet lady "Anti-Icky-Poo" purchase online, used in crime scene clean up. I will look into it. Sounds very cool!

Love the support. Keep up the good work moms!

I know that you should NOT use anything with ammonia in it as it will only make the smell worse. I have had pretty good luck in the past with vinegar/ It is a neutralizer and gets rid of many odors. If you have a carpet cleaner you can use vinegar and water and then rinse, let dry and repeat/ After all this you may want to go over it again with carpet cleaner or a little tide so you won't have a strong vinegar smell. Good luck.

Vinegar works!!!!!. If I were you, and depending on the size of the area that smells, I would get a rag soaked with regular distilled vinegar and water (say about 2:3 mix) and soak the area with it. Repeat if necessary. If you have a carpet cleaner, I'm not sure how that would work, but you could add vinegar to your soap solution and clean it that way. I've used vinegar in the laundry (one example: cat couldn't make it to the litter box in time and used the bath mat instead) with great success! Good luck! Btb - spraying is their way of marking an area with urine, as opposed to peeing because they think that's where they can go. Our boy cat sprayed when he saw other cats in our backyard and couldn't get outside to defend his space. He has since stopped, and vinegar cleaned up all the smelly spots.

There is a great product called "Nature's Miracle" that you can buy at Pet Pals, and New Leaf I think. It's an enzymatic cleaner that actually dissolves organic stains (urine, poop, blood, etc.) so there is nothing left. I've used it a lot and always been pleased with the results. Just follow the intstructions on the bottle.

I have been told that Vodka will take the smell out, I have been searching for something to remove the kitty pee smell and my friends (who deal with feral cats as well) told me that Vokda will take the smell out of anything, just spray is on or poor in onto the carpet and blot it dry with a towel.. Brand doesn't matter either, you just want the high alochol content.. its also not a horrible chemical that will hurt children or animals with toxic fumes!! Good Luck!

There is a chemical you can buy at Petco or Petsmart that is specificly for cat urine stains. Spray the area and let it sit for a few minutes then rinse or dab with a wet cloth. It works really well on carpets and furniture. It also repells your feline from doing it again. If your cat is spraying you may need to get him fixed. Only male cats spray. After he has been fixed he will stop. ( I also had this problem with two of my cats who were strays. I currently have 5 all together!) Good Luck

Large pet stores like Petsmart and Petco have an entire aisle of cat urine odor remover, but some of them DO NOT WORK. I've tried most of them myself when we've had a problem cat - Natures Miracle works very well, and another called Kids and Pets does the trick too. Now remember, right after you spray the spot with the cleaner, the odor will be worse before it gets better as, when the urine on the carpet becomes wet again it tends to make the smell much more noticeable. Once the spot is clean and dry, the odor will dissapate.

I'd try Folex to make sure the urine stain is well treated and then use some Febreze afterward to help with the smell. We bought our Folex at Lowe's, but I think it's sold at pet stores, too. The Febreze you can probably get anywhere. You could also (or instead of) rent a small (or large) steam cleaner for a quick spot treatment if you'd prefer. I think supermarkets still rent them out. Oh! You could also try tea tree oil, instead of Febreze, for the odor and a little extra cleaning -it also has some antiseptic properties, I think (spot check it on the carpet first, though). We've had a few pet accidents over the years (pee, diarrhea, vomit --all so lovely) and that's what worked for us. Good luck!

We have two cats who have recently been giving us some trouble with urinating on things. Yuck! One thing that has really worked is scrubbing the spot with 1:1 hydrogen peroxide and water. I make sure to rinse the spot really well with water afterwards if it's a place my baby girl (7 months) might crawl or scoot onto. It definitely neutralizes the smell.

It sounds like the cat, usually male, sprayed since there is a distinct difference between urine and spray, the latter being much stronger. Although the odor lingers it will eventually go away but depending on the carpet color a stain may remain. Since your carpet is new I wouldn't take chances, get an estimate from a carpet cleaner and weigh how that compares to living with that smell or testing a lot of products. Ask if they can spot the carpet or if they would want to do the whole thing, etc. Even experts or special products aren't always able to completely eradicate urine smells but professionals are your best bet. If you have a scrap of carpet left, test any product, even white vinegar, on that piece before using it on the rug. And White vinegar is the preferred type for this kind of treatment. Good luck. G. Unfortunately, I just had this problem myself in my first brand new home. We have been here only 7 mos. I went online and tried white vinegar and water. Blot up what you can and then wet it generously with a solution of 1/2 water and 1/2 white vinegar. The vinegar is supposed to neutralize the acid. Let it sit for a few minutes and then blot up what you can and let it dry. It will get rid of the odor to the human nose but as I was told by more than one professional cleaner, cats have great noses, so if you have a pet as well, it may want to start using that area as well. We have 3 cats and it started when 1 had a bladder infection (vet says that they will go in strange places) Now she thinks its her box. Thank goodness we are breaking her of this and she has done it twice. Good luck!!

Hi,

We had a similar problem a few years ago. My cat started to spray in the house after I had my daughter. One thing with cat urine is that the longer you wait, the harder it will be to get out. Enzyme cleaners work well and so does vinegar and water. However, it may be worth it to call in the professional. If it got into the pad, putting a cleaner on the carpet may not get rid of the smell. You may need to replace that section of pad. Since the carpet is new, you may it is probably worth the money not to have deal with the smell. Sorry that happened to you!

I use vinegar for all sorts of unpleasant smells. Mix a little vinegar with water and with a clean cloth rub it in and around the spot. Blot dry. Your living room will smell like a salad for a while but that smell will quickly dissipate. I use vinegar in my wash too. It's great for diapers and baby clothes and sheets! Great for ALL laundry. Also use it to help my drains keep running smoothly. Vinegar is great, it can be easily found, serves MANY uses, and it's cheap!

When I moved into, where I am living now, the place was dirty!! The previous owners had three cats, a dog and two babies! It took me two weeks to clean the place! However, I had gotten most of the smell out, but not all. I had used a pre shampoo spray for carpets and then shampooed the carpet. Both the shampoo and pre spray was for animal odor and I still had smell! A friend told me to go to a janitorial supply store. I found an Bio-Enzymatic Urine Digester with odor neutralizer. It smells like green apples. I used it full strength and it worked! My place smelled like green apples for a week, but that's better then pee! Not all janitorial supply stores stock it, so call around before you go.

To remove the smell of urine you need to use a product with an enzyme in it such as Shout Stain Remover. Mix with a little water, pour directly on the spot, and rub it in with a scrub brush. Blot the area dry with a towel. When the carpet is completely dry vacume. Ususally only one application will do the trick. This also works well for puppies during the house breaking stage.

This works for urine and "Spray" from male cats.....
White Vinegar in a spray bottle.
Spray it on, and wipe, damp it with an old towel.
Let it dry and then repeat with watered down vinegar until its all gone.

You can rinse the vinegar smell out with water and towel treatment.
This routine will prevent the cat or others from choosing that spot again.
Be sure to saturate carpet lining and pad as far down as the urine went.
Check the wall for "spray"- from the males.

you can see if you got it all with a black light ( the urine looks yellow under the light) .
Better than smelling through the vinegar.
The vinegar smell will fade shortly.
Good luck.

You might want to spot-test first, but I've had no problems with bleached spots. It's just a mixture of baking soda and peroxide- add a little lemon juice for old smells and stains, the acid breaks it up. I've used this on all the messes the kids and pets make and its fantastic. I had experience in an apartment we rented once. Fortunately the urine was in a corner where I could pull up and wash the carpet, and then lay the corner back down and puch it back into the tack board. But I believe that is what it takes, because extractor carpet shampooers just can't really get enough water through the carpet to get all the cat urine out. Previous experience - even pro's could not get the odor out. I just took a basin of water and a little ammonia, because it doesn't leave a residue in the carpet to attract dirt, and pulled up the carpet and padding and laid towels (rags) underneath to catch the water, and with a brush poured some of the ammonia water through the soiled place and brushed it real good too, dipping the brush in the basin of ammonia water 'till I felt sure all the cat pee had to be washed out of the carpet and padding. You need a good supply of cleanig towels to catch the water that comes through the carpet, and then they can be washed in the washing machine. This worked for me.

Hydrogen peroxide and part water always works with any clean up involving urine or feces. It will not damage your carpet, I have a dark brown carpet, and it has never bleached it or caused damage. It does take the oder out though! Another thing that works to get the smell out is to fill a spray bottle with water, and a tablespoon of vanilla. This will take the smell right out.
And to ward the cat from urinating again in the same spot, use lemon water. Like I mentioned, I have dark brown carpet, and I have used this technique as well, and the lemon water never damaged the carpet. For whatever reason, cats do not like the smell of it and will not pee or poo wherever the lemon water is sprayed. I have had cats since I was little, so throughout the years I have learned a few helpful tricks.

Good Luck!

Hi S.,

I have a dog and two cats as well as every pet carpet spot remover you can imagine. We even purchased a heavy duty wet vac to clean up wet/runny dog and cat poop when there is an accident. They never work as well as a professional. It has taken me days to do it myself with the constant worry if the smell will come back or the stain will wick back up to the top of the carpet. I hate paying the money to a professional but for me it's always been well worth it. I pay about $65.00 and they do a thorough job, and once when the smell came back, they came back for free. Now I never have a problem, they take care of it immediately, it dries well and there is no smell. It's worth it if you have new carpet, and you won't have the worry.
Hope that helps. J.

I would clean it real good and then use Urine Gone, the Dollar Tree carries an off brand in the pet supplies that seem to work good and is a lot cheaper. If you can't find any of that use some carpet spot cleaner and then a carpet or fabric refresher for pet odors. Good luck.

I have used a product called Nature's Miracle. You just have to make sure that the product soaks all the way down to the pad. It will not remove the smell right away, but as the product dries, the smell will evaporate with it. It seems strange to just pour the product on and leave it, but it works! You can get it in the cleaning section of Target or at PetsMart. It runs about $4-$5 per bottle.

You could try Febreeze odor neutralizer. I have no idea how it works, but it does. But I would really rent a steam cleaner at the store and clean the carpet. If you don't get the odor out completely a cat will just return to that spot and mark it over and over. Good luck!

S., use this product called "Nature's miracle". It is a solution of live enzymes. Make sure you give the bottle a shake first, and saturate the area. It will take a few days to work, if it is a large area to get wet. If when it is dry it still smells, reapply. It really does work. I have two cats and two dogs, and it is the only thing that has worked for urine, feces, or vomit. You can get it at pet food stores. I know Pet Food Express carries it.

Go to the pet store. They sell products specifically for this (to deal with the smell for you and also that other cats don't smell it and spray there as well). It will be some kind so carpet cleaner spray. You'll probably have to put it on, scrub, vacuum and repeat.

In the mean time, cleaning with a little warm sudsy water won't make it worse and might make it more livable for you. (something like dawn that won't hur the carpet).

I use:

BacOut Stain & Odor Eliminator (lime scented deep green spray bottle -- natural food section or store should carry it) or

Natrics pet stain and odor remover (currently at Raleys but may also be at natural food store).

I used to use vinegar, it can work too but some people are sensitive to the oder of vinegar.

When people talk about cats spraying, it is peeing. However, instead of squating and peeing in a puddle, they stand and spray it out (kind of like you would with a spray bottle set on mist) to cover more area. It is a territorial behavior.

The best way is to hire a carpet cleaner who uses an enzyme that will clear up the smell immediately. The enzyme also penetrates the back of the carpet as well as the pad underneath. Most carpet cleaners that I have dealt with will charge a nominal amount to treat a small area.
I have also tried "Anti-Icky Poo" which was recommended to me by a friend. The number to call to order is ###-###-####. You might me able to find an 800 number on the internet. The man who manufactures the product is located in San Diego but he does distribute around the U.S. You may find it under Mister Max, as well.
I have also tried Nature's Miracle, which can be found at PetsMart, as well as other stores, I'm sure.
Both of these products work, but the carpet cleaning method is faster.

Hi S.,

Go to the pet store and buy Nature's Miracle. It is a urine remover/neutralizer product. It has enzymes in it that neutralize the smell rather than mask it with perfumes. It really works. The trick to finding exactly where to put the stuff is to shine a black light on your carpet. The only thing that works second to that is crawling around with your nose to the carpet. the blacklight even showed where my cat had sprayed on a wall, so I could clean the wall. Cat urine has phosphorous in it which glows in a black light.

Cats, even big cats likes tigers and lions will back up to an object, raise their tails and spray. Most cats will stop doing this if they are neutered. My cat did fake sprays, backing up, wiggling his tail but nothing was spraying out. It is their way of marking territory. Like a dog lifting his leg on every twig and blade of grass. The spray has a stronger smell than urine. Almost lie a concentrated version.

Some cats will start spraying if you suddenly bring home a new cat. Letting the newbie know, "This is MY house."

Nature's Miracle also works with pet stains on carpets, from feces or urine. It seems to work better in my opinion than Pet stain removal products like Resolve, or Woolite.

Good luck.

There's two I know of under the names "Simple Solution" and "Nature's Miracle." I have had the same problem as well for years and it wasn't until recently that I found the 1 true thing that works...but for warning sake, only if it's safe for the item it's being used on. But for a good example, after our 2 cats marked our leather couch, we ended up throwing it away because we couldn't get out the smell! I was devastated. We then bought a microsuede couch and made both cats "outdoor" cats. I felt bad but I couldn't afford another couch(among other things like new carpet). And of course, a cat got in without me knowing and marked that couch only having it for 1 month. So I did some serious research and found that soaking it in Hydrogen Peroxide is the only thing that actually breaks down the enzymes in the urine. NOW...BEFORE DOING THIS YOU MUST TEST AN AREA!!!!! It CAN discolor, but so far to date I have used it on that couch, our lifejackets, a duffle bag, carpet areas and a blanket and ALL have lost the smell and retain their original appearance. There has been NO discoloration nor ruining of the fabrics...but there is always that risk when using it so take LOTS of care and testing before doing it. Then again, it all depends on how worth it is for you if it were to discolor...discolored verses smell? Anyhoo, that's my food for thought. I've tried proffesionals cleaning it, febreez, carpet cleaning solutions, anything you can think of. This one takes the cake! Good luck...

Hello,

I am a grandmother and have had lots of experience with cat urine. The first thing is to get it when it's wet before it dries into the carpet pad (most importantly) and of course the carpet. I have used lots of water to saturate the carpet and pad and towels to get the water out. I do this over and over until the urine is very diluted. This part is very important. There are many carpet cleaners out there but generally this does not leave a stain, only the PH smell. If you google this you will find recommendations of several cleaners, I would use baking soda to counteract the acid and call a carpet cleaner for advice too.

There are many ways to get the smell of cat urine out of carpets. One way is to go to a local Longs Drug store,or any drug store and see if they sell a product called HEXOL.It should be in the area where the cleaning products are located. I also found it once in the pharmacy department of a local chain store. The product has been on the market since my grandmother who would be in her 90's used as a cleaning product. If you open the cap you will smell a disenfectant smell to it. Put a cap full in a spray bottle with about 8 ounces of water and spray the area. After it drys not only will the smell be gone but you won't smell the disenfectant either. This product also works with urnine smell that seems to inbed itself in our kids bedding. When you wash their clothes if you put a cap full in the washer when it is initally filling up with water along with you regular detergent it will totally elimadate the smell. It is a true neutrolizer.

If its only one spot, I would make a mixture of white vinegar and water, half and half, put it in a spray bottle and saturate the surrounding area. If the cat sprayed, it means urine went up down and all around. Vinegar is a wonderful cure for aromas. I leave a bowl of vinegar in the room where my cat box is (in a spot where she cant get to it or knock it over) and that keeps the room fresh, it absorbs odors. Anyway, spray the area and just let it dry, this usually works. You may be being ultra sensitive since you KNOW it happened and you are "looking" and "anticipating" the aroma each time you enter your living room.

The best thing I have used to remove odor and stains from any animal urine is white vinegar. It does not discolor the fabric of the carpet, but gets out the urine and the odor. I would simply pour a small amount of a solution of about half vinegar and half water on the area, use some sort of stiff scrub brush to work it in, then use old rags or paper towels to absorb most of the liquid. You might want to use a couple of applications if the stain is deep, or if it has dried on the area for some time. Once you have the majority of the liquid removed from the carpet, you could use a shop vac to suction the rest out, then let it finish drying.

Hi S.,
From my experience there isn't much that works. I renovate homes and when there is animal urine, espceially cat, we have to remove the carpet and paint the floors with a special paint (or exterior paint if we just happen to have any)to keep stains and smell away. You might cut out that area and put in a new piece (f you have any scraps left)after painting the floor.

Otherwise I would check with any of the commercial or professionals that clean for a living, such as Clean-Rite or maybe find a commercial cleaning supply company and ask them.
Good Luck,

Although, someone posted the Amonia- which I haven't tried. So, as you can tell, I have had the same problem for a few years now. The best thing I've found is just spraying/blotting the stain with plain water and using my rainbow vacuum to suck it all up. A great alternative to the rainbow would be to use a shop vac or wet/dry vac, if your husband has one in the garage. I've also used a product I got at Target, Urine Gone, which works really well, but you have to clean the carpet afterwards as it leaves a residue that will attract dirt. FORGET NATURE'S MIRACLE!!!! THIS STUFF BLOWS ITS DOORS OFF!!!
I am a veterinary professional of 20 years and can certainly help you with this one. There is a product called Anti-Icky-Poo. It is used by law enforcement to clean up crime scenes and is made for the sole purpose of removing bodily fluids and decay. It will REMOVE (not mask) ANY ODOR. You must purcahase it on-line ($50-/gal...lasts forever). It is a bacterial enzyme that not only eliminates odor but continues to break it down over time because the bacteria multiplies to eat the odor! I use it unconcentrated for urine/vomit/feces and 3 to 1 with water in a spray bottle to freshen the room, fabrics or in the car. When my kids were little and potty training, they would have an accident in the bed from time to time. This stuff makes the accident as if it never happened! Remember, it KILLS the odor, not masks it! I highly recommend this product for all foul odors. It is very safe for animals and people. MUCH SAFER THAN MR. CLEAN OR OTHER NASTY CHEMICALS! And no, I am not a sales person. Just someone who gets this question a lot and deals with gross stuff everyday. Good Luck!

Nature's Miracle, for Cats, sold at pet stores in a white bottle with red lettering. It seems to be the best at removing urine without staining the carpet or leaving a residue. Good Luck!

Hi S.,
I'm E. and here's what I use in those cases. It's called Renuziy Super Odor Neutralizer. It's a fine mist air freshener--- Citrus Splash; but not recommended for silk or leather.

hi we have 2 dogs and 1 cat and have had our fair share of accidents, and on purposes with our animals, the best thing that works for us is a product called Nature's Miracle, you can find it at any pet store- the product is enzymes and really works and is safe for carpets and babies. if it is a really stubborn stain try rubbing alcohol in conjunction with the Nature's miracle. Go buy it right away, because the sooner you use it the better it works, good luck

Try Simple Solution cat spray and urine odor remover. You can find it at any pet store...You pour it on the spot and as it dries it breaks down the enzymes in the urine to eliminate it. It may take up to two weeks for the smell to be completely gone, but be patient, because it does work. Also, to pinpoint the exact spot, use a black light...Good luck! I know how frustrating this can be!!

Hi S.!

There's a fabulous product on the market called "Natures Miracle". Pretty inexpensive, around $8-$12 depending on the size of the bottle. Both are pretty large. They have a specific cat formula. It's an enzyme base & breaks it down really well. You can find it at Western Feed or any feed store. I dont know if Petsmart carry's it.

Good luck!

Pet smart carries a product called simple solutions. It seems to work really well. Give it a try. You really need to make sure that you saturate the area down to the carpet pad. Good luck.

I worked in the pet industry for about five years before I married. Nature's Miracle was the go-to product at the time and worked well. I recommend using a black light to really enable yourself to "see" the problem area prior to treating to make sure you don't miss any. Hope this helps!
