How to Clean the Sofa?
Hi,
My 4yr old had an accident on the couch and I can't get rid of the smell. Any suggestions. I wash the covers but the pee went through to the bottom of the couch,

So What Happened?™
Thanks for all the advice. I will try the Urine Gone product. I washed the covers for the sofa and sprayed Fabreeze and that took the smell away but it took all day. My son's bed is covered with a plastic liner but sometimes smells so I'm going to see if the Urine Gone works. Thanks again.

there are anti pet odor sprays-at any pet store, walmart, target etc...One thing that is VERY important-the stain must be dry. I think it says that on the bottle. It works better if you haven't tried other things 1st. Yes, i learned the same way you will!

Vinegar. It will smell bad initially, but then it goes away. Also, hang it on the line (or outside). The sun does wonders!!!!!

This may sound strange, but go buy a HUGE jug of vodka and strip off the cover (that part should be washable) and then douse the cushion part in the tub in vodka for a night, then allow it to dry. We've done this with our cats (cat pee is the worst!) and it really works. Good luck.

When my kids had accidents on the furniture, I would clean the spot and then soaked the spot with febreeze. When the febreeze dried, the smell was gone.

We used baking soda on a mattress and it took the odor out! The stain is still there though.

There is a solution for pet urine you can buy at W-mart and other stores that neutralizes the smell. That helped my sofa/chair/carpet! : )

I rented a Rug Doctor and did all of my fabric furniture including our mattresses. They have fabric treatment product that's a Urine Order Eliminator in a spray bottle that works fantastic with a shampooer, and also works well alone. It's about $9 at the grocery store.

Hi R.,
I have found dumping baking soda over the spill will absorb a lot. Just let it sit awhile and vacuum. Also, spraying Fabreeze seems to help a lot too.Good luck!

vinegar or enzyme cleaner? We had a kid throw-up on our carpet and vinegar took the smell out. The vinegar smell fades within a day or so.
Good luck...

I had the same problem. I used straight hydrogen peroxide. I just sprayed it on the foam part of the cushion and let it air dry. The smell was gone. I know that hydrogen peroxide will bleach some fabrics, so test a small area first if you plan on using it on the fabric cover.

There's an as seen on TV product called Urine Gone and it's awesome. I have kids, dogs and cats so there are always accidents and it works really well. It is in a spray bottle and you can get it at Lowes, Bed Bath & Beyond and Linen's N Things in the cleaning aisle. It comes 2 different ways. One way is in a package with a blacklight so you can see exactly where the urine is and the cost is $20. The other way is to just buy the individual product for $10. You would just need enough product to soak down to the bottom of the couch and it should be fine! Good Luck!

There's a product called Kids & Pets - they sell it at Home Depot and other places. It's been great for us. You pour it liberally on the stain, let it dry, then rub it a little. Really, no major scrubbing or anything! This has worked great for us on a very light colored micro-fiber couch, on everything our little one has "dropped" over the years - urine, food, vomit, etc. Good Luck.

Good luck, you have a lot of ideas to go thru!

I would try soaking it with a mixture of half vinegar and half water. It will smell like vinegar at first, but when it dries the smell will be gone. Or you can get nature's miracle at the pet store - it is used for animal pee and poo, but since we always have it around I've used it on kid pee, too.

Hi R. ~ We had a similar accident on our couch when my sister-in-law came out with her little ones, however, it was not pee! We called the carpet cleaner. Whatever they used, it worked well and we didn't have to wait for days for our couch to dry out. Good Luck!

Soak your couch really well with an enzyme cleaner. Pet Force is a great brand if you can get ahold of it. It smells nice and you can dilute it in warm water. (Unlike most other brands.) The enzyme will keep combining with food products, throw up and things that come out the other end until it is gone then the enzyme dies.

Hi R., is it urine? you can try bleech water, maybe vinegar. Fabreeze might even work. As hot as it is, it will make the smell worse, it should be less noticible when it cools down, do this get the deoderizers the ones that come in a little can like cat food would come in, they have the pull top lid, and there are 3 square deoderizes in there and place them under you coauch cushions, they smeel really good, The name excapes my, you'ss see then in the cleaning isle, J.
