When emotionally difficult news is reported, whether local or national, or if something difficult befalls you, what do you do to find solace and regain your inner peace?

I do the following:
turn off the news
stop looking at the internet
hug my kid
slow down while doing my tasks
go for a hike
make a meal
breathe deeply and slowly
read books with inspirational quotations regarding peace
meditate on calming scenes
meditate saying, "I'm safe" until I believe it more than I did when I started
paint
make art
sleep (though sometimes I feel worse)
talk with my hubby about the situation
hug my kid more

Best wishes for regaining your peace.

I go outside and breathe, real deep breathes of fresh air, look at the night sky, the lights of downtown, the lights on my neighbor's houses, and focus on being grateful, grateful, grateful. Outside is always my go to - reminds me my world is bigger than me and we're all connected.

I think you and I have similar lists. (Good timing for this list-- my husband told me that someone jumped off the roof of the parking garage he uses this afternoon. It just keeps coming, doesn't it.) My first go-to is always to go for a walk and yes, turning off the tv helps. Today my son had a playdate and that was a great distraction for me! We got out playdough, lincoln logs, marble runs... it was busy and good. :)

I also have a game I play with myself I call Ten (or on a tough day Fifteen) Blessings, and when I walk, I must come up with 15 things or people I am grateful for. It never fails to make me feel better. My son's enthusiasm is wonderful, too.:)

Off to make a good dinner now. Our souls and stomachs are hungry...

Thanks for sharing! I like these.... it's hard to gather yourself sometimes to employ some of these, but important to try! I do try to count my blessings, and try to control the things I am able to, and pray about the rest. I appreciate you posting these...

You have great ways to re-gain yoru inner peace. I shall adopt some. Thanks for sharing.

What do I do?

-turn "on" the news. I'm instantly grateful.
-go for a walk when possible
-go outside (nature can do wonders to slow down the pace & bring me
back down "to earth"
-make a gratitude list
-pray
-hug my child
-pay close attention to my child. The kind where you actually slow down &
watch them from a distance w/o them knowing. Brings love to my heart.
-write a short poem
-exercise (release those endorphins)
-laugh
-call an old friend
-"un-plug". Turn off the tv, turn off the cell phone etc.

I wish the best for everyone! My life may not be perfect but it's so very good (even with all of it's problems!)!

I dunno, I think I just compartmentalize.
In my head.
These things are mind boggling and emotionally as well... but I think I sorta detach and compartmentalize it.
Its also part of my training... per what I studied in college and did as work for a time. I was in the behavioral sciences.

My Uncle too, just had a really bad health problem. Still ongoing.

Fear... is a thing that is always or not always, foremost in one's mind... but when things like this happens, it jars one's sense of normalcy.
And we look to the immediate and future... constructs of its impact, in our personal lives and societal as well. It is a huge.... humongous.... thing to digest in our mind and heart.

Main thing, we do not get desensitized and numbed... by it.
Being able to feel.... it a coping mechanism too, although it discombobulates, us for a time.
It is a process... if we understand that it is a process, it allows us to allow ourselves... to digest it and process it in a way that will aid us.

I just did a mental adjustment with prayer journaling. Tomorrow I will walk about 2 1/2 miles on the treadmill. Sunshine always helps me. I am thinking of getting a light box because I notice the first day my light changes in the kitchen because of winter and it immediately gets me down.
