My son is 19 months old and today he was diagnosed with RAD (Reactive Airway Disease). He has been coughing chronically for the past 3 days with no relief. Last January he was put on a nebulizer for similar symptoms but that is currently not working. We have hepa-filters throughout our house, but I was wondering if anyone else is familiar with this and if there is anything else we can be doing to help ease his discomfort.

What can I do next?

There are other options out there. Chiropractic is one of them. The brain and nervous system controls your entire body keeping you health. If there are any interferences to the nerves the body can not work the way it is suppose to. You can go to a chiropractor who specializes in kids to see if this is happening to your son. Check out this website: www.icpa4kids.org. I hope you find the right answers for you and your son.

Not sure what RAD is really, but would guess get rid of any pets you may have and get rid of carpet, and old stuffed animals and pillows (dust traps), at minimum in his room. We were told to clean out our ducts for allergies if your house isn't new. Also get rid of curtains. Keep windows closed and air on when humid/raining/allergy season, even when its nice out.

What your son has is basically Asthma. Look into finding out if your son has allergies that can be affecting his breathing. Mention your concern to your doc. If the nebulizer isn't working your doc needs to know and give your son something else.

Hi B.,

My daughter was diagnosed with RAD when she was 3 months old. She is currently having a hard time with hers as well. The doctors have her on the albertol (sp) nebulizer as well as pulmicort (sp) neb. She has been on both since she was 3 months and she is currently 2 1/2. When it gets bad we do the pulmicort 2 times a day and really helps. It is a steriod so it helps heal the lungs. They also started her on cingular in June. Which seemed to have really helped. But when it gets bad we go to the bathroom and turn on the hot water and sit in there with the moisture. We were advised not to give her any cough medicine as that would supress the cough and she needs to get the stuff out of her lungs or it could cause other problems. If you would like to see a specialist I would suggest seeing Dr. Kelly Newhaul. She is the first doctor who explained everything to us and got it all under control. Her number is ###-###-####. She works in Lincoln Park but I think she may have other offices. I hope this information helps.

Bridgette,
Hi, I'm sorry to hear about your son...has your Dr. advised you of a protocal to treat him? I have been researching natural methods to care for my son and although our kids have two totally different diagnosis,I would like to suggest that there is a very good supplement that has alot of positive feedback via research. The easy name is DMG. DMG is a natural supplement that helps children and adults strengthen their immune system. I have read that it can be helpful for children with respiritory problems. I would do search on the recent studies to see if it may be an option to help your son. You can purchase it at Whole Foods and it's very affordable. If you decide to use DMG, a high quality Vitamin C is could also be used to boost his immune. It's really helped my son,he's only 3 yrs old and has a weak immne system. Good Luck...If you need any websites for your research, I'd be happy to forward them.
