I have been working out at my Y all summer, and now that I am headed back to teaching on Wednesday, I am probably going to have to use the Y locker rooms to get ready. Does anyone know; are the showers like an open shower thing, or are they single/private shower stalls? I really don't know what to call either option, but I hope you know what I'm talking about :)
I just feel really awkward showering in front of strangers. And actually, I wouldn't feel as awkward if I didn't know any of them, but one of the girls that I work out with and am starting to run with gets ready there and for some reason that just bugs me if I have to shower in front of someone I know :)
Maybe I'm weird, but I really really really don't want to shower in front of everyone haha :) I just feel super super uncomfortable.
I'm thinking about calling the Y directly and asking, but what do I say? I don't want to sound like a total idiot. Do I ask if ithe women's showers are open or single stall? Would that make sense, or is there a better way to word it?

Thank you! A curtain would be fine haha :) I am ok with getting dressed quickly in front of others, but I would just feel super awkward in a big shower with a bunch of other naked people lol.
Yes, I have been working out there all summer but I never got a tour of the place. And, as I said; now I am going to have to use the lockers there to get ready for work. I live about 10 minutes away, so all summer I just went home. It makes no sense to do that when the Y is right off the interstate I need to take. I have a 45 minute drive one-way and have to be there early for bus duty this year, so trying to shorten my drive time :)
We go to 2 different YMCA's and both have vinlyn curtains that cover the showers. People could peek through the sides, but they would really have to look. The family locker rooms have private showers in each room. If you go in the morning before work I am going to assume that there aren't many families there needing to use them and you could probably get a private room :)
Just go in there and check it out next time you are at your Y! You can make it seem like you are needing to see what is there so you know what to bring w/you when you use them!
Ours are private with a little shower curtain. But a lot of women shower privately, but still get undressed/dressed in the open.
It depends on the Y, I have seen some with open showers, some with curtian stalls and some with both. Best bet is to call or take a quick peek when you go next.
The one my parents go to has both.

I know that the showers for our local gym/swim club are open showers. There are stalls for dressing.
Just look next time you go or call and ask if the showers are private or open.
They'll tell you.
I work at two local Ys and have gone to several others. I think those "group showers" like you may have had in high school are a thing of the past. Most have seem to have individual stalls.
You should also have several choices too - a women & girls locker room, a family locker room and a women's locker room. The first is for women with female children or girls over the age of 8 who can get ready alone, the second is for ADULT women only (no kids) and the third is for parents/families with opposite sexed children.
They suggest that us teachers use the women's locker rooms always as they don't want our students ever see us showering or changing and parents getting the wrong idea if their kids say, "Mom I just saw Ms. Susie naked!"
I think lots of people feel like you do. We ask for humility in the locker rooms - i.e. no unnecessary nakedness (wrapping yourself in a towel, keeping a suit or towel on in the steam room/saunas, etc.).
Plus most "showers" also seem to have either attached or separate changing areas that use that vinyl curtain. That way you don't have to stand in front of everyone else or go into a toilet area.
More often than not, I will use the handicapped stall as it's almost NEVER used! It has lots of extra space on the benches too.
I haven't seen any places that don't have at least a shower curtain for privacy at the stall. You might have to dry off and change in the same stall that you shower.
I would think it depends on your local Y. I use two of them in my area. One of them only has open showers and the other one has open showers on one side and curtained stalls on the other. I'm not big on being naked in front of others either but I have managed to do it. Remember that the crowd at the Y tends to be people of all ages, sizes, and fitness levels - as opposed to some uber gym where everyone has 6 pac abs!
