Please Share Your Experiences with the Mirena IUD

I have done my own online research, I have consulted with my doctor and now I"m looking for other women to share their experiences with the side effects of the Mirena IUD.

I know what the manufacturer lists as possible side effects (possible meaning not at all guaranteed) and I know that everybody has a different body so results may vary wildly, that being said, I'd love to hear your real life experiences.

My major concern is an increased amount of acne (I suffered for years with terrible adult acne and have finally gotten it under control and eliminated) because a pimple here and there is no big deal, but a consistent never ending break out would be a deal breaker for me, and your experiences with the irregular bleeding/spotting .

Please share!

So What Happened?

I am very specifically looking for experiences with the Mirena IUD, not Paraguard.

I have been on the Mirena IUD for 4 years. I have had zero complications or side effects from it. I barely get a period at all. So for me, it's great.

My sisters are on it too - and I have three friends on it. They all tried it because they had heavy periods as they got older and some were anemic.

I really really wanted to love my Minera IUD. I have a good friend who loved hers and it seemed so simple. I ended up hating mine.

I had pretty bad cramping off and on for three months. The doctor's office told me it was "normal". That finally calmed down and was only during my period. (Which they told me my period would stop. It never did.)

In fact I bled non-stop the entire time I had the thing in. I spotted for 13 months straight...sometimes a little heavier than spotting...and had my normal periods. I never had a break from bleeding. Panty liners everyday and sometimes worrying that they were not enough.

I had it removed at my next well woman check because I couldn't take it anymore.

That was my experience. I lasted a little over a year and was miserable with it. But it gets great reviews. My OB/GYN told me some people love it and some hate it. Either one or the other.

Good luck!!

Hey, I just got my second mirena last yr, clearly pleased with the results. I had the break through bleeding for approx 5 days, slight cramp on the day of insertion and no sex for a short amount of specified time, but seriously....THAT'S IT!
It's the best ever. I get zits and pimples on my chin, but I always have, but nothing like crazy, unmanageable acne or anything. I'll never use anything else. :)

I never had any big problems with acne. I didn't notice any change or increase after Mirenea. I occasionally get acne and either do a queens Helenes mint Julip face mask or witch hazel to clear it up.
I did have very heavy periods with severe cramping. After 3 kids my periods were a little more bearable. After Mirenia they were gone for about a year. After that I would get spotting-not every month, but still no cramps. I'm almost due to have it removed and I will get very light spotting monthly now. It lasts less than a day and still no cramps.
I do recommend it to others. My periods were terrible!!! I don't miss them at all! and you can always have it removed if the side effects are too adverse for your liking.

I've had my Mirena for over two years. No side effects other than bleeding for approximately one month when I first got it. I do not get any acne and get very, very light (2-3 days) spotting a month (if that). Love it!

I'm on my 4th Mirena. I had one put in between each child and then after I was done with babies. I don't get periods on them, so that's been fantastic. The one time I got a period (about a year after insertion on my current one), it lasted for 24 hours.

Acne - I've always had issues with acne, so I don't know if it's a result of the IUD or genetics. As a teen it was awful. It was getting pretty bad along my jaw line after my last child so I went to the dermatologist. It is mostly controlled with topicals now.

I've had the Mirena IUD for 4 years. I've had no side effects. A friend told me it hurt when you put it in and you shouldn't drive yourself (because you'll be in pain after). I had a friend take me, but it wasn't necessary. I could have driven home. I never get a period. I've spotted 2 or 3 times in 4 years. No acne, no weight gain, no pain.

I know two people on Mirena. One loves it. The other had it removed because it made her depressed and tired and she gained a lot of weight. She also got "crazy acting" according to her husband from the hormones. He also complained about feeling the stiff string attached during sex. My other friend had none of those problems. My doctor said she loved the Mirena. I got the Paragard to avoid hormones, and it's been very problematic so far. I'm still trying to get through first 3 months before deciding to remove.

No issues with acne or any other side effects. My only side effect is a good one - very light periods. I love my mirena.

My adult daughter uses the Mirena IUD and I do not notice any acne problems. The IUD did however perforate her uterus :(

I have paraguard. The copper iud and love it. I've had it for a year and after the first 6 or so months the few side effects stopped.. I did have cramping snd heavy bleeding but now I am down to no cramps and a moderate period. Do not feel it at all plus no hormones. No guessing if your pregnant because you have a period monthly unlike mirana plus that has hormones. I suggest looking into paraguard

I always chime in on Mirena questions, because I had such a rare, debilitating side effect and want others to be aware. The entire 5 years I had horrible lower back pain and didn't realize it was all caused by the minera. I was researching getting a new one and discovered others who had experience back pain. I removed the Mirena and my back pain when completely away within months. Just be aware of it, it's hard to pinpoint back pain, but Mirena definitely can cause that side effect. It was excruciatingly painful for years. That said, I do think this is rare.

I've used Mirena for about eight years now (on the second IUD now), and my experience is much like the others' here. Periods are almost nonexistent, no side effects other than mild cramping for a couple of hours immediately after it was inserted. I used to have problems with acne, but didn't notice any change for better or worse with the Mirena. The acne is under control now with topical medications.
