Hello-

I think my 2 year old daughter has Pinworms. We have a Dr. appt later today but wanted to find out some info before then. She does suck her thumb so that might be how she got them. Has anyone had this problem before- did the child have to take antibiotics, did it clear up?

Thanks for sharing any info!

What can I do next?

A.,
You can check your daughter at night when she is sleeping, use a flash light and check her bottom. If you see small whitish grey wiggley little eyelash type of movement from her rectum, she has pinworms. The good news they are totally treatable and come from humans, not animals. Start the wash, use soap and water with a nail brush at the bathroom sink and you will be free of the little critters. Much easier to get rid of than lice!!!
Good luck1

My daughter had it as well. Poor thing was suffering for about a month before anyone figured out what she had. I'm not to sure if her thumb sucking is the cause but getting them cleared up is so easy. We (dad, daughter & me) had to take a pill (actually the doc told me to take it with chocolate!!!) and then 2 weeks after take one more. The next day my daughter was feeling wonderful. Don't worry everything will be fine.

Nasty little creatures... but curable. Please give your doctor a call- your whole family will likely need to be treated (not sure about the 1 year old..) but definitely you and your hubby.

Wash EVERYTHING in hot water- towels, blankets, clothing, whatever she is in contact with. ALL the bedding- yours, babies, etc. The Pinworm medicine takes a few days to cycle through. You need to make sure the cycle is complete and again keep everything CLEAN (particularly the bathrooms- toilets, tub, floors, faucets... these little things spread pretty easy).

Pinworms have a certain grossness factor but if I had to choose between them and, say, headlice, Pinworms are the lesser of two evils.

Good luck.

I'm wondering if there is an animal in your house that could potentially also have pinworms. Sometimes pinworms pass from animals to kids. When I was little, I used to share ice cream cones with my dog, and unfortunately caught them from her once. The doctor might ask you about this. good luck!

No, it's not antibiotics, it's a pinworm medicine. You can actually get it over the counter, usually in liquid form.

Yes, it's the thumb-sucking. In our family, the nail-biters and thumb-suckers got pinworms, and the two family members without this nasty habit apparently didn't get it (but I made them take the medicine anyway).

No big deal (but gross). Start getting her to wash her hands frequently.
