I have a dog and a cat that both run in and out of the house. I am wondering if anyone knows of any flea and tick products that I can use on my carpet and furniture that won't harm my baby.

Frontline's Top Spot works great for all of our indoor/outdoor fur babies. Any fleas that may be in the house will naturally go to your pets, and if they're treated regularly, you won't have a problem in the house. We've been doing this for years with much success.

I have just the thing! We use it for our two dogs and it's wonderful! Totally safe around the kids - if they swallowed an entire bottle, we wouldn't have to take them to the hospital. Feel free to give me a call, email or visit my website (there is a business attached, but you wouldn't have to do that - you can just purchase the products you would specifically need). www.healthyhome4family.com (my email and phone number are on the bottom of the home page...)

If your pets don't have fleas right now, I don't know that you'd need to treat your carpet and furniture. I have 2 dogs and I have always had a flea free home simply by using Frontline or Advantage on them. Its safe for the pets and people too if you follow the instructions and you only need to use it once every months or so. Its a godsend! There's more advice here http://www.mrscleanjeans.com/pages/FAMILY/fleapatrol.html
but I think you'll find you only need to use the Frontline type product. It can be pricey but its well worth it!

For controlling fleas and ticks directly on your pets there are a few effective alternatives to the drops (which have been known to cause seizures). Garlic is one of them but I never know how much to try and trick my pets into eating. It's easier with the dogs (I have two) but the cats (two again) just look at me like I'm crazy. There is a company called Shaklee that makes an all organic cleaner called Basic H and adding a small amount (1/2 tsp. per gallon) to your pets' water has always been effective for me. Basic H is actually good for a LOT of other things too. Shaklee also makes something called Basic G. You'd have to be careful administering this though; because while Basic H is harmless Basic G is a germicide and can cause some illness. I think 1/8 of a tsp. per gallon and I only use this when the flea & tick season is at its most intense.

Shaklee is a direct marketing company so you might check the yellow pages to see if there is a listed distributer near you or even check online.

I would call your Vet. to be on the safe side and the best advice. I know there is a product that Feldmans sales that works really good at keeping the fleas etc. off. I forget the name though! Call them and ask, then check with your vet?

I know they are a little expensive but Pet Smart is the best place to find these things. They cater to all types of owners (homeopathic, new age, old school) and they carry a wide range of products to satify any owner. If you go in and ask one of thier service people they can tell you which products work best with the least amount of pesticides. When my little guy was tiny and we had our puppy I found that giving her a weekly bath with a mild puupy shampoo (with flea preventative) kept them out of the house anyway. If they don't have what you're looking for they can tell you the best place to find it. Hope that helps.

If you don't have fleas in your house now, then don't do anything to your carpets or furniture. If you do have a problem, then I would call a professional cleaner and have them cleaned. I highly recommend Certified Carpet Systems http://certifiedcarpetsystems.com/, they do a great job. We also have our yard treated for fleas by Ryan Lawn and Tree. I've got four dogs that are fed nothing but homecooked food and use all natural products. If you have want to go that route, then I highly recommend, Dr. Pictarians Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats and checking out Animal Talk Naturally http://www.animaltalknaturally.com/ as well as the Barkery in Brookside or Independence.
