How soon after giving birth should I expect to get my period? I am not breastfeeding. My baby is 8 weeks old and nothing yet. We have had sex and used protection but it failed. I'm nervous. Not looking to add to the family right now. Thanks for your help Mamas!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks Everyone for responding!! I am reassured to see that it took some other moms a few months to get their period. This is the first time I haven't breastfed so I don't know what to expect. I took a pregnancy test and it was negative. However, I know it may be too early. What ever is in store for us, I know we can handle.

With an 8 week old, sex with failed protection and 4 kids under the age of 5, I'd be nervous too. I think you need a pregancy test.

I was breastfeeding and started my first cycle 5 weeks after delivery. I explained to my doctor what was happening and she told me it was probably my period. I didn't believe her until 28 days later when I had my second cycle. After 11 months with my new son it's been the same things every 28 days. So I guess my doctor was right :) One more thing...I've always been that regular, I don't know if that has any bearing on time after delivery.

sometimes your period can take a couple months to come back. My baby is three months old and I haven't gotten it yet. My sister doesn't get hers til the baby is like 8 or 9 months old. But just go by what you did with your other kids. Ease your mind and take a test.

Sounds like you are worried about getting pregnant again. I really liked getting an IUD after my babies. I am really bad about taking a pill everyday at the same time. There are many option though. You should do the one you think is best for you.

6 weeks actually. But you never know some women's bodies take longer to return to normal. Good Luck!!

I was always afraid I was going to get pregnant after I gave birth so I started on the pill right away! I got my period between 8 and 12 weeks after both deliveries.

With my second child I didn't breastfeed and I got AF right around 3 or 4 months.

I'm sure everyone is different, but I didn't breast feed with either of my two kids and my periods started about six months after their births.

YIKES,your period should come back a few weeks after the post partum bleeding stopped, otherwise I'd go to the dollar store and invest in a couple prgnancy tests!

Just to add to what others have said...just an FYI. Some women can get their periods while breastfeeding. I did with my daughter. I got my period about 10 weeks after birth WHILE nursing her.

yikes! I guess I'm not the one to answer this because my first (who is 3 now) I breastfeed until 14 months and then got a period a couple months after that. I'm bfing my second now who is 2 months old and I'm not expecting any period until I'm done with her too. You can get started on regular pills since you're not bfing and that will get your periods started.

Right after delivery, you would have your lochia flow which can last for around 2-4 weeks. Some women's periods may take a bit to re-establish based on horomones, medications, breastfeeding, age, etc.

You can get pregnant anytime after you give birth, just as you could before you were pregnant. Even moms who breastfeed have gotten pregnant, so it's not a 100% guarantee for birth control. The only real way to tell is take a pregnancy test -urine/blood test to confirm.

Best,
C.

I did not get mine until about 16-18 weeks afterwards. I breastfed for 1 month.
Hope this helps....I wouldn't panic yet :)

I'd take a test. My friend had a tubal and got pregnant anyhow right at 6 weeks. I guess there's an increased risk in the weeks after delivery?
