Am I Pregnant 7 Months Postpartum?

I went to the bathroom today and noticed that my underwear was soaked in blood. It was a major surprise considering I am breastfeeding and I gave birth only 7 months ago. I am wondering at what point did people have their first period after baby or if anyone got pregnant after their first baby quickly. Looking back the past couple weeks, I have been feeling strange... but I'm not sure if it's related to pregnancy or if I'm just getting my first period. With my first baby I bled for a few days when I first got pregnant. How soon can a period come? Is it normal to get pregnant this early?
Before my first baby, I never ever had a normal period... maybe 2 times a year. So this is weird for me!

Anyone have any thoughts, it would be appreciated! :)

What can I do next?

Hi Audrey,
I got my period 8 weeks after delivering my son and was pregnant with my daughter 7 months after he was born.

Women are more fertile after just having a baby! So it is very common to get pregnant quickly if you are not using protection. My friends kids are 11 months apart!!!

My kids are 17 months apart and it is awesome! They like the same cartoons, the same toys, the same activities, etc... so there is never a complaint as to what we do.

Don't get me wrong, they squabble about who gets to play with what sometimes but it is great! Good luck :)

With my son, 5 months and my daughter two months. I breast fed my son for 3 years and my daughter is 21 months and I'm still breastfeeding. I get my period every 28 days like clock work. I have envied people that didn't get their periods back so quickly; however, I believe that it is healthier to get it.

Well, since you can get pregnant any time you have unprotected sex...of course, you can get pregnant easily. 7 months is not early, to get pregnant again. I know plenty of people who were breastfeeding and got pregnant 2-3 months postpartum. Breastfeeding, is NOT birth control. You do NOT need a period to ovulate. Take a test. It's the only way to know.

To answer your other question, your hormones could be going nuts, if you are about to start a period.

You can get pregnant very soon after giving birth. Breastfeeding is not birth control.

My dearest friend got pregnant 5 weeks after giving birth. She did not think she needed birth control because she was breastfeeding. And she never even had a period between those pregnancies.

I think it is probably your period, but you know your body better than any of us here do obviously. If you think you could be pregnant take a home pregnancy test. It won't cause any harm to take the test, but could help ease your mind to know the answer one way or the other.

Hi!
I have friends who exclusively breast fed & got their period immediately after giving birth. Then I have friends who didnt get their period for as long as 14 mos. For me, it was 11 mos w/my first & 10 mos w/my second.
You should probably take a pregnancy test to know for sure.
I got pg w/my 2nd when my 1st was only 11 mos old. I got pg before actually getting my period. My boys are 19 mos apart. I love it!!

I know a gal who had a baby on Valentines day, and when she went for her 6 week check up, she was already pregnant again. Her 2nd baby was born early,,on Halloween. She was breast feeding the whole time.

My sister starts her period 8 weeks after she has a baby. And she nurses 100%. Breastfeeding is not a form of birth control. I've had four babies. My first it was 8 months until my period arrived, next was 10 months, next was 8 months, and the next was 6 months (very surprising), and I got prego at 6.5 months with baby #5.

With all the bleeding, it sounds more like a period to me. It's normal:-)

Audrey, I hear you. My cycle has been so messed up that it has always been very difficult to tell what was what. With both of my pregnancies, I thought for sure I was just getting my period as the symptoms were exactly the same.

I think your in a normal timeframe for getting your period back. That would be my first thought. I got mine 10mos after and it was heavier (and still is) than before I gave birth.

When in doubt, though - take a test!

I got my period every 28 days like clockwork prior to getting pregnant. After I delivered my first I started bleeding very heavy at exactly 28 days and it was my period. I thought "Hey this isn't fair, I'm breastfeeding!" Well it continued every month, and I was very fertile, because I was preggo again at 6 months...so yes it's possible!
Best wishes to you and yours!

I can only say that, even though I breastfed exclusively, my cycle started up like normal exactly four months after both my kids. It didn't seem fair!

So breastfeeding isn't reliable birth control either!

I got pregnant six months postpartum (on purpose! I know! WHAT was I thinking??). I didn't even have a period before I got pregnant. The problem is, pregnancy and menstruation have a lot of the same symptons - raging hormones, sore boobs, tiredness etc. Why not just do a test to be sure one way or the other.

I got my period back at 5 months with my first and at 8 months with my second while nursing. It stinks I was looking forward to a longer break like some of my friends had. I am 36 weeks with #3 and hoping the third time is the charm and it stays away longer this time.

You can get pregnant while breastfeeding! It is not birth control. I got my period back 9 months after giving birth - while still exclusively breastfeeding. It was super heavy and lasted almost 2 weeks. Hoping that doesn't happen again. Still breastfeeding, my baby is 10.5 months old - haven't had another period. I was told this is normal to be irregular as long as you are breastfeeding.

For me it is 12 to 18 months... for my SIL she starts having everything go like clockwork by the 3rd month.

Also just because are breastfeeding doesn't mean you can't get with child...

You can get pregnant 6 weeks after you give birth! Some women don't ovulate or ovulate as regularly while breastfeeding, but many do. I had my first period about 8 weeks after giving birth both times. You can certainly be pregnant after 7 months! That's how you get so many siblings out there who are 15 or 16 (or 12) months apart in age. It sounds like you have your period.
