We have to patch our son's eye for 6 - 8 hours a day. Does anyone have advice on how to get a 2yr old to comply. He has no issues wearing his glasses, but hates the patch.

What can I do next?

My daughter was 4 when we had to do her's, so a big age difference. But we did silly things with hers. But she had to wear hers all day (but sleeping) for 3 days on, one day off. She only had it off for night sleeping.

We drew silly things on her's. Sometimes it was a funny eye. Othertimes just drawings. Often we let her do it (but she was older than your son). It made her more invested in it. Sometimes we added stickers to it (I got some decent teency ones at the craft store that we experimented with that actually stayed stuck to it...stars, hearts, snowflakes and the like). It made her a bit invested in the process. But a patch, with glasses over it for her for many months was the norm.

She also patched her doll, and her favorite Beany Baby (her "lovey" all her life). We just had to get creative cuz she had to wear it so much for so long. And it worked, she just got used to it.

We "wasted" alot of patches and those little round bandaids (for her beanie and her dolly) but it helped a ton!

Best wishes!!

My son had "lazy eye" and we used Ortopads that we ordered online. They aren't as sticky as the eye pads you buy at the drug store, so they pull off easier from the skin. Plus they come in a variety of cool designs, so I let my son pick which one he wanted to wear. I think we started patching around age 4, and had a fabulous result. I believe it was age 7 when he stopped patching. We would just time tell him patching was necessary or he'd have to have surgery, which was the truth. With just patching alone, he totally reversed his eye problems -- no surgery needed. So hang in there!

I had this question when my daughter was 18 months and had to patch for strabismus. We had all kinds of suggestions from using a sticker chart to decorating the patches. We tried both, but with both of us working and MIL (who watched the girls) not working with us to help, it was next to impossible. (She was convinced that if she held her hand over my daughters eyes every day and said,"Lord, heal this baby" that it would happen)
Anyway, two surgeries later she is fine, but still has to wear her glasses until she outgrows the frames. The new sitter is awesome with making her wear her glasses. It also helps that she is almost 4 now.
Good Luck! It was a tough road for us, but had a superior doc!

Ask your Dr. if you can put tape over the lens of the side he need to patch. Someone in our opthamologist's office told us that we could have done that with our daughter. We battled the patch too. Also, I don't know what kind of patch you're using, but we had much better luck with one called "frame huggers". They attach to the glasses and are more comfortable to wear than the standard strap ones.

We also ended up using medication (drops) to blur our daughter's weak eye for correcting amblyopia instead of using the patch. You might see if you have an option there...

Good luck!
