Ovaries Are a Mess but Want Kids...

I have polycystic ovaries-- when I ovulate there is almost always a painful cyste. My youngest is 5 and I feel very strongly that a beautiful little one is supposed to be in our family. Has anyone else had problems with PCOS and been able to conceive? Does anyone who adopted have advice as to when I should start that process and if there is a less expensive route? I would love to bring someone into our family who needs to feel wanted and loved. Im not even opposed to an older child if I can be sure that it is meant to be.

I do not have any advice about being able to conceive, I found out that my tubes are blocked so I was not able to conceive. My husband and I decided to adopt and it was a wonderful decision. We now have a beautiful 8-month-old little girl. We had a great experience working with Family Service Agency (http://www.fsaphoenix.org/). They specialize in the placement of infants, the process seemed long at times but we got very lucky and were selected by a birthmother within 7 months of being certified. They say that the average time is 18 months. I would contact them as soon as possible; they have intro classes only twice a year. We liked this agency because they work with birthmothers that decide to parent and need help or decide to put their child up for adoption. When they do decide on adoption you know that they have been given every opportunity to make a choice that is right for them. You also have the choice of how much contact you are comfortable with the birthmother and father. It is all about what is right for the situation. The people we worked with at Family Service Agency were all wonderful and made the experience beautiful. If you would like to talk more about it please send me a message and I will give you my phone number. Good luck, there are many children out there that need good homes.

I am adopted and was blessed with wonderful adoptive parents. However, before you go ahead with plans to adopt, I would recommend that you read the book, "Primal Wound" by Nancy Verrier. It is very insightful for the adoptee and the adoptive parents (especially the mother) and the birth mother as well.

Hi S.,

We adopted our daughter from China almost a year ago and are in the process of adopting another baby from Korea. Since my experience is in International Adoption I can speak to that but I know there are lots of Domestic Adoption options as well.

My advice would be to contact adoption agencies in your area and see what programs they offer. Some agencies have waiting children who really need families because they are older so that might be an option for you. There are so many programs out there involving different countries and also domestic programs so it is just a mater of what speaks to you. Check with several agencies though and make sure they are accredited by the Hague before you work with them. There are lists of Hague accredited agencies all over the net if you search.

Our adoption experience has been so amazing that I encourage you to go this route! Good luck! TLT

I have PCOS and have given birth to six children. My symptoms are managed through diet, exercise, and certain herbs that are useful.

With diet, I eat nothing with artificial growth hormones and limit the amount of breads, pasta, etc.

Exercise is nothing less that 4-5 days a week for 45 minutes at at a time.

For dissolving cysts, I use Nature's Sunshine brand blend called N-FX. I periodically get them to size of a golf ball or larger and this stuff dissolves them inside of 2 weeks. For increasing fertility, I drink about a quart a day of organic red raspberry leaf.

If you want to talk more, let me know and we can talk off-list.

I also have polycystic ovaries and have only been able to conceive one child. He is now seven years old. When he was about 5 years old my husband and I started down the road to adoption. We are very religious and prayed a lot about our decision to adopt and both felt very good about it. We went through our churches adoption agency and were encouraged to "find" our baby by telling everyone we knew that we wanted to adopt. Which we did. We also looked into further fertility treatments to no avail. We also looked into the foster adopt program and found that there are numerous agencies in the state with which you can become certified through. We were excited about the fostering program and had started to take the necessary courses for certification when we received an early morning phone call that changed our lives. A birthmother was wanting to place her newborn son with us. I can honestly tell you that adoption was not an easy road, but we have been blessed beyond measure with a beautiful baby boy who is the joy of our family's life. If you and your family are thinking about adoption, it is a wonderful way in which your family can share the love you have to give.

My advice would be to start the process as soon as you and your family are comfortable with it. The foster-adopt program will place a child with your family sooner than and adopt only, but the down side is that the child may not be able to stay pending court/birthparent decisions. The adopt only process varies in the amount of time a child is placed depending on your family's preferences in the child you would like to adopt. ie... if you are more specific about the child you would like it would likely take longer than if your preferences are more general. In any case my family and I are all for adoption and full heartedly recommend it to those who have love to share with children in need.

Good luck to you and God bless you in your endeavors.K.

Hi S., I too struggle with cysts and a very large uterine fibroid. I am also a social worker who helps folks adopt. I am a strong advocate for adoption. I am a stand that every child in the world has a family that loves them. That all said...Check your local paper and adoption agencies about private adoption. Talk to your local state social services office about becoming a foster/adopt parent. If you do a state adoption, the state pays for all of the fees, including homestudy and inspection. You may even qualify for adoption subsidies. Each situation has its own sets of drawbacks but the blessing is the beautiful child and the family.

I have pcos & the extremely painful cramps when I ovulate (very rare occurrence that I do that.) My husband & I tried for years to conceive after our daughter turned 3. Years of sadness when no period would come for months but test always was negative. Then I went through 2.5 months of nonstop bleeding in 06. I was fuming mad but a month after stopped I was preggo with my son who is now 7 months old. Talk to you ob/gyn about wanting another baby there are several drugs that can help and weight loss helps alot as well. I dont know if you have to take metformin for you insulin levels but if so you can continue to take it even after you become pregnant. Also watch the stress I was in an extremely stressful job when we were trying to conceive but after quitting 2 months later I was pregnant. I know another woman who has pcos she did In vitro 2x and now has a beautiful little girl her husband & her tryed for 10yrs before doing in vitro. I use doctor steven eddie as my ob. He is next to chandler regional hospital. He was the one to origanal diagnosed me.

We are the happy parents of one bio and one adopted child. If you adopt from the public system,it doesn't cost anything. I could write a several volume manual on our experiences, but it boils down to this. It is difficult, but you can do it. You will get the child you want, a child with a hard start in life will get a great home, and it won't be expensive. However, start as soon as possible and be tenacious almost to the point of being rude with social workers. Stay on top of everything at every moment and keep an open mind. Realize that you will probably have to find your own child. Adoption websites like Adoptuskids.org are a lifesaver.

I have not heard of PCOS until now, but i have always had severe ovary pain during ovulation and had no problem conceiving. However I do not know whether or not i have PCOS.
As for adoption, I have not adopted, but am in the process of becoming a foster parent. My husband and I would like to use this route for adoption. I am not sure about the whole process, but if it does cost anything, I am sure it is a lot less than a private adoption or going to an agency.

Hey S.,

I too have this stupid PCOS and have had several ruptures and had 2 emergency surgeries! I have 2 kids (3.5 and 17wks) and have had the problem for about 5 years. I had no problem conceiving my 1st son...One day off the birth control...LOL but I had a lot of problems with my 2nd child...I had an ectopic pregnancy and several miscarriages before having my baby boy but the doctors dont think that it has anything to do with the PCOS and both my boys are healthy! We are considering trying to conceive in August and I pray that we have no issues this time around but I only have one working ovary and tube now so it will just be harder to conceive initially. Good luck!!! I feel your pain...I have a cyst right now...its so nice being prego and not having them! If you have any questions or want to chat hit me up.
T.

ps my MIL adopted 4 kids from the foster care system and they have had a great experience...the process is very long though depending on the childs situation and just make sure that your 2 bio kids are ok with it and accept it. That is a HUGE problem right now on our side! All the kids hate it and feel as though they were bumped from the family not to mention she spends no time with any of her grandkids since her youngest is only 20mo. But that is us and Im sure it would work great for you! I was is foster care and so are 2 of my sisters and it would have been nice to go to a good family!

I highly encourage people who are looking into adoption to research adoption through the foster care system. There are many children of all ages who are in need of good homes. When you adopt through the foster care system, most of your legal fees are paid for so it is fairly inexpensive. Here is a good site for more information:

S., There is an organization called RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association and they have resources for doctors and adoption agencies. Visit their website at www.southwest.resolve.org for more local AZ information, support groups, and contacts.

RESOLVE provides support groups as well as committee members who specialize in providing information about topics, such as adoption. The support group leaders have resource binders with names of doctors, if you want to go that route. The support groups are a great way to meet other women who have been in your shoes as well as get tips and tricks from them about their infertility treatments or adoptions.

My only encouragement is this. If you adopt it is very much recommended to keep birth order in your family. I would encourage you to adopt through a church sponsored organization. One of the best adoption agencies I know of is through Hope Worldwide. They are based out of Georgia I believe but have connections nationwide. Go to Hopeworldwide.com (I think that's the website)

I have not had your problem but could advise you a little about adoption. I have been a foster parent for five years and have loved the experience. We have adopted one child and have two one-year-olds in my home now that will soon be up for adoption. The foster parent is usually the first one asked for adoption if there is no family relation. One of these babies I have had since he was two days old. He is like my own. The cost for adoption is nothing. And the cost for becoming a foster parent is nothing -- just a little time and effort. These babies and children need to feel loved and wanted. Just an idea to think about!
