Organic/Grass fed/All Natural

Hi Moms,

I am making some changes and decided to go mostly organic (at least buy the fruits and veggies that are important to buy organic). Last month, I bought a big bag of frozen mickey mouse shaped chicken nuggets from Costco. I know how important it is to buy organic meat, and I am considering throwing the mickey mouse chicken away. Regarding the mickey mouse chicken nuggets, the bag says, "made with all-natural ingredients," and "no preservatives." What does all-natural ingredients mean, really? I know it's not the same as organic or grass fed. So, should I throw the bag away? Just trying to be the healthiest I can and avoid pesticides. Thanks!

I would recommend reading Michael Pollan's book the "Omnivore's Dilemma." It is fascinating, and will spread some light on the differences between foods and how they are grown (organic, free range, etc.). I hate non fiction, and LOVED this book - totally eye opening!

I'd throw it away! ;)
Smart choices momma! In that choice, your children have probably tasted their last chicken nugget- I never even HAD a chicken nugget until I was about 20! ;) You will want to feed your family real food- the more processing it goes through the worse it is for you children. All natural ingredients doesn't mean you want to eat it. Sugar is natural, white flour starts as a 'natural thing', even dog poop is natural. -not something I want to eat. ;) You would want to make sure that the chicken you buy were not genetically altered, that they were fed organic grains, as well as free ranige (able to scratch around outside) Your best bet is to buy from a small local farm. My parents have a small hobby farm, as well as a health food store- so I have a great source. I'm sure you could find something in your area like this!
Best of luck!
HUGS
Edit: I wanted to add after reading another response: "Certified Organic" is the governments way of sticking their hand out and into the organic farmers pocket! Many local farmers who have never used herbicides and pesticides on their crops are no longer allowed to use the term 'organic' unless they have their soil tested by 'officials' for the fee of, last I knew, $25.00 PER ITEM they are growing and want to sell as 'orgainc'. This will 'certify' them organic. Many can't afford to pay this fee- so can't call their crops organic. Here locally, they are trying to come up with a new term in order to circumvent this political intrusion!

This is so funny, I have the same Micky Mouse nuggets from Costco in my freezer and I feel bad for throwing them away, but I don't want to feed them to my kids! We decided to go as organic/locally grown as possible, and the nuggets are a throwback to our old lifestyle. We shop at Whole Foods and *try* to buy only free range meat and eggs. In the summer we do a lot of farmers markets locally for our meat and produce. It's more expensive, but we feel so much better about what we're eating, and our bodies actually feel better.

Good luck, and I'll throw them away if you do! Let's do it on the count of three, one... two....

Good luck trying to find actual grass fed meat in the U.S.A. 99% of the population has never tasted it. Organic does not mean grass fed.
Why throw away perfectly good food? I'd keep it and use it.

Here's link to find farms in your area:

Usually this type of eat is not sold in stores.

Have you seen the prices for organic or grass-fed beef? Get ready to eat a lot less meat lol! I love the idea of it but the prices are way out there.

Before you toss the nuggets why not see if a neighbor or other family member would want them. If the bag is unopened a food bank might take them or local church.

well regardless (yes, they're not grass fed or organic), they're still made with "mechanically reclaimed meat" which is in reality for chicken means mostly bone, cartilage, beaks and feet. The stuff comes from chickens washed over 40 times in bleach, while these leftovers are gathered up, ground together, then bc its crawling with bacteria, washed again in ammonia. (hmm....seems I remember my momma saying something about not mixing those two....) Then they add a ton of sodium to keep it sanitary and tasting "good" (although anyone who makes a considered taste test and still declares that as "good" can only be described as "lacking taste buds"! >wink<<) - read: MSG. So if you are serious about making healthier choices for your kids regardless of their objections, throw em out!

If however, you have more work than time and can't spend two hours on every meal (I only do for dinner, for instance), then you might wanna keep these nasty things around for emergency meals or something! Even tree hugger, crispy hippie Bob can't green everything unless he goes all Thoreau. :D So no Mommy guilt allowed!

Congratulations on your decision for a healthier lifestyle! btw, you may want to look into a CSA (consumer supported agriculture) for your area. Contracting with a local farm for seasonal locally grown organics, grass fed meat and eggs has changed and simplified our lives dramatically! and OMGOSH!!! I never knew that REAL food tastes as good as it does!

I second what JL says. I bought them once because I was in a hurry and didn't feel like making another stop. Big mistake. They were gross. My kids refused to eat them. I'm not one to just toss food out but I could not even give them away.
Good for you in trying to go organic! Just start slowly and work your way into it. And yes it is more expensive but isn't our health worth it?

All natural could mean anything. It's not regulated and really when you see it on a product you should go the other direction b/c it's usually used on things that aren't that healthy. However times are tough and I hate to waste food. I don't think that finishing out this bag of chicken nuggets (as long as you aren't feeding only those to your kids for days on end) is really going to hurt anyone. If you have an extra freezer now is the time to use it. Whole foods and many other grocery stores have rotational sales. Find out when chicken, beef and pork goes on sale and stock up. Also you can make your own chicken nuggets much healthier than the particle nuggets that come pre-frozen.
Just make a puree of sweet potatoes and dip chicken strips into it.
Then dip in flour
Then dip in one egg beaten with a little water
Then dip in bread crumbs
Fry in a saute pan in about 1/4 inch of oil.

This way you can use any kind of chicken you want and your kids are eating veggies

All naturals ingredients doesn't really mean anything. There are no regulations on using the words "all natural," like there is with certified organic. Here is what I've read about this type of labeling:

"Meat from animals treated with artificial hormones can (and is) labeled "natural," as is meat injected with saline solution (claimed to add flavor, which it does, but it also adds considerable weight to a product sold by the pound). Food containing "natural flavors" such as processed proteins that you may or may not consider desirable can legally sport the label "natural."

How long is the ingredient list? If there are more then a few ingredients, that should tell you something. Chicken nuggets are pretty notorious, for their processing and lack of nutritional quality. They are basically pieced together pieces of animal formed into a nugget shape.

"All natural" is as trustworthy as the company is. You really have to know your brands in the natural food industry since the term "natural" is not regulated. If no ingredients raise red flags, personally I would still eat them this once, but next time choose organic so that I know I'm getting meat that does not contain antibiotics or growth hormones. Although certified organic may be best in the store, I think even better is to buy from a local farm. Be familiar with the source, how they raise their animals, etc. Unfortunately the FDA has made it so that the "big" organic growers can find loopholes and still be labeled USDA certified organic. The fact these are "chicken nuggets" and found at Costco should definitely be a concern. I applaud you on your decision to seek out healthier foods for your family!

You've already got some great answers! I agree any claim of "all-natural" or "preservative-free" is normally an attempt at "Green Marketing"! It often means absolutely nothing!
Anyways, I wanted to add that the brand Q'ron makes some "Chik'n nuggets" that are really yummy. I think they are made of portabello mushrooms? (they don't taste like mushrooms at all!) But of course they are MUCH healthier than the mickey mouse ones! : )

What I have read is that the label "all natural" really does not mean anything. Very odd. I am not sure if they are exploiting a loophole or if what I read was incorrect.

I feed my daughter the Boca or Morning Star(fake chicken nuggets as i call them) and she loves them. Look up "how chicken nuggets are made" it will make you sick and never want to eat them, or feed them to you children!!

If the bag is unopened give it away to a food pantry or something! If it is opened, give it to a neighbor or 1 of your family members or friend that you know with children that will eat it. Don't throw it away and waste food. I just am so against that. I am happy that you are starting to explore another route of food for your family! If you start going through your cupboards and start finding other things that arent "good" for your new diet, please give to a food pantry in you local community. Thanks and good luck on your new adventure with foods.
