Odd Mole on My Daughters Forehead

Recently my daughter has developed a red mole on the side of her forehead. It was not there when she was born. It started as something the size of a pin head and has slowly been growing over the past couple of months. At first I thought it was a blood blister of some kind so I put ointment on it but it isn't going away and I dont' think it will. I have an appointment for her to see her dr on July 10th. Do you think I need to speed it up? I don't know what it is.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

It came off by itself and there is no sign of where it was!

If it's very red it's probably a bundle of blood vessels that is just a little crazy - called a hemangioma. I think they usually go away with time. My nephew had one on his arm - he's 9 months old and it's shrinking now. Best to get it checked if you're worried, but it's probably nothing. I think waiting until July 10 is fine.

Also see the wikipedia entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hemangioma - for a picture. Don't let the "possible complications" in this entry scare you - Wikipedia is NOT an official medical reference (though it appears correct here). Most of these resolve themselves.

I agree with everyone else. My 4 year old had the same thing on his cheek. It started as a tiny pin prick, and then grew to about the size of a pencil eraser. He is almost 5 now and you can barely see a trace of it. My almost 2 year old had one develop on her foot at a couple of months old. It grew until she was about a year, and has stopped growing now. Dr says it will eventually go away like my sons did. My nephew had the same thing on his forehead and arm. They grew for a year or so, then stopped. He is now 14 and no trace of the one on the forehead, and the one on his arm is almost gone. Hope this eases your mind a bit!

It sounds as though your daughter has what is called a strawberry birthmark if this is what it is she will be fine. Have it check out on the 10th. My neice was born with one on the side of her head it grew and then stopped it is under her hair it has never been a problem for her. It is more a cosmetic issue then health issue.

There are plenty of dermatologist. If you are concerned find one that can fit you in sooner. I am sure it is nothing but it can give you piece of mind.

I agree with Mari-Lyn L, my sister was born with one on her lip and it got bigger before it shrunk and went away for good. I wouldn't rush the appointment unless (a) it hurts to the touch or (b) you are worried to the point that you are either obsessing over it or losing sleep over it.

Sounds like everyone is on the same page. My son developed one on his arm at 2 months. His was bright red and raised. Now he is 3 1/2 and the redness is all gone and it is mostly flattened out.
My daughter has a flat red marking on her lower back that she was born with, she is almost 8 months and it appears about the same.

I have an older friend whose teenage son had one on his face that continued to spread throughout his childhood, they were going to do surgery and then changed their minds. Now it is barely noticeable to me. His wasn't bright red though, more mottled/bruised looking.

Best of luck at your appointment.

When you made the appt did you let them know what your concern? I would have it looked at and if its making you loose sleep at night then i'd call the doctors office and tell them what the concerns are and even talk to the nurse.

Hi A.,
I have heard a lot about hemangiomas and that sounds like one. They go away on their own but there are procedures to get rid of them also. Hope this helps some, good luck and don't worry.
