Nervous and Scared

I've recently started to notice that in photos my 9 yr old daughter's right eye always has a white mark in it where a normal red eye would appear and she's recently started complaining about blurred vision. At her doctor visit was yesterday durning the eye exam she was barely able to make out the E (you know, the largest letter at the top of the eye chart) with her right eye and the doctor confirmed at there is a white spot in her eye when looking through the microscope (it's not visible with the naked eye). She's been referred to an Opthamologist ASAP. Her appointment is this next week. As most people do, I went online and Googled the possibilities... It can be anywhere from a cateract to eye cancer. I've been so upset and crying all night about the "what if's." I'm the type of person who assumes the worst even though I try so hard not to...

I'm just so scared for my daughter. Waiting for a true diagnosis next week is killing me! She knows what's going on but I of course haven't shared with her the "what if's" or my fear. She's such a sweetheart and is just excited about the possibilities of getting glasses.

Have any of you mamas gone through anything like this or know someone who has? Any words of support or encouragement you can offer is greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your comments and support. It turns out that my daughter has a lazy eye and can be corrected with glasses and eye patch therapy. I am so very grateful!! And she's excited that she gets to wear glasses. She looks SO cute in them. :)

OMG!! I am going through the same thing. We have been back and forth to Childrens Hospital because in the middle of Feb. we found a lump on our 11 yr. old daughters neck. And of course when we got her into her PCP, he ran blood work, CT Scans ASAP. He said that they needed to make sure it wasnt cancerous. Talk about fear. There is no word to describe the feeling that you get. we had to go home and wait for the results. So I did same thing... researched on the internet...(Worst Possible Thing To Do)... and scared myself even more. I dont think my husband nor I slept for days. It has been hard. Well after that they refered us to an Pediatric ENT and we have been back and forth ever since. Well finally after much testing and worry last monday they called and finally confirmed what she had. She has a Macrocystic Lymphatic Malformation. It is treatable and something she was born with. It is filled with fluid and tissue so she may need surgery but its not cancerous! Thank Goodness...
Its been a long month and we still arent out of the woods yet but at least we can get through this. So I can totally understand with your worry. And its so hard not to assume the worst especially when we read it on the computer. But remember the worst part is the waiting game. God only gives us what we can handle. Be positive and remember get off the computer!! LOL.. Good luck dear, and sending good thoughts your way!!

Whatever you do please don't let on to your daughter about all the gloom and doom possibilities. That kind of behavior really is going to affect her, not just in this situation ,but, possibly the rest of her life and how she deals with things in general, much less , the scary /uncertain unknowns in the future. All you can do is be suppotive, hope for the best and make yourself aware of ALL the options , for a given diagnosis. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Remember, no matter what, she still has her life ,and she'll manage , kids are tough little people. If you don't make a big deal about this neither will she. So you hit a bump in the road, grab yourself by the shoe strings and pull yourself back up again, it's going to be ok no matter what.
If you have to adjust things in her life ,and possibly yours, nothing is impossible. I don't mean to minimize your worries and fear, but, what good will all that wasted energy do ? You can't change whatever will be . People, children included deal with alot of traumatic things in their lives ,everyday, and they still manage to be thankful for what they have, instead of dwelling on what they don't have, and they make the most of it , living each day to the fullest. I wish you and your daughter the best in whatever the outcome is, C. S.

I don't have any information on the symptoms you mention. I just wanted to let you know that I know your fears, and I am sorry you are going through this. My father and I have a genetic degenerative retinal condition which ultimately will lead to blindness. Every eye exam with my daughters is torture since I am so afraid of them inheriting this. All I can say is you are lucky to be attentive as a Mom and lucky you have access to good docs. the stuff they can do to treat eye conditions is really amazing these days, I know because I research it all the time. So stay hopeful, and realize there ae dozens of possibilities some pretty insignificant. Don't get too worked up until you have some answers, and try to not convey your anxiety to your daughter because you dont' want her to be scared of the eye doctor.

How awful!! I was told my 16 month needed to have a hip x-ray done and most likely woul dneed to wear a brace or have corrective surgury done. This was after a well vist when the doctor watched her walk across the room.

I had to take her for X-Rays and was so worried. Turned out to be nothing at all. Soooo thankful!!

TRY, TRY, TRY not to get all worked up about it. Wait for the appt and see what they say. And IF it turns out to be something, HOPEFULLY they have caught it soon enough to get it corrected and she can move on with her normal life.

Our thoughts are with you!!

My friend's young child had some type of cancerous tumor behind her eye that I think has shown up similar in a white mark. The little girl has had several surgeries/treatments, went totally blind in that eye, but she is still a very bright and energetic little girl and her family has so much support.

Whether the issue is big or small, children are very resilient and upbeat little creatures. Much prayers to you all!

ahhh nothing is worse than a nervous mommy with a computer! My newborn had to have her screenings redone for abnormal results I drove myself INSANE for a week with google. It turned out to be nothing, but that week was torture. If you can, turn off the computer and just keep yourself focused on the positive. Good luck!

I'm sorry I don't know of anyone who has had this type of experience and I haven't either I just wanted to offer some words of encouragement your way. I can only imagine how scared and worried you must be. As a mother we want nothing less than the best for our kids and take it so hard when we see a possibility that they may suffer in some way. I know it may be hard..but try not to focus on the 'what ifs' ..focus on more positive thinking. If it becomes the worse case scenario with the advancements we are fortunate to have I'm sure it could be corrected or made live-able. Enjoy your daughter and remember God only gives us what He knows we can handle. I will be praying for you and your family. Keep your chin up you and your family will get through this.

My prayers are with you. Let your daughter be your inspiration. Cataracts are treatable, and if it is cancer, I pray you find the right ophthalmologist/surgeon to perform the surgery. Much hugs to you.

You are taking the right steps to get it checked out. Really, there isn't anything else you can actually do until you get a diagnosis. Worrying doesn't help the matter. Keep your mind off of it and go and have fun with her!

I noticed my sons eye being different from the other. The doctor kinda sees it and I totally see it. But of course I spend hours looking at my babies. He is 7 now and I have noticed this for sometime. He never complained, but I started noticing thing in his behavior and then one day he melted down on me about his homework. I took him to the eye doctor and he just needed glasses. Both my husband and I both wear glasses so it clicked with me and I thought I should take him in. Sure enough he was nearsighted, his one eye was way worse than the other so they didnt work well together. He has done awesome since we got the glasses. We do have to be strict about them. Every night they go on my desk, and every day he has to put them on and keep them on. Plus I get after him if he plays with them. We have thankfully have had the same ones for 7 months with no issues.
