Need Some Tips - Swarthmore,PA

We just put my 2 1/2 year old son in a bed a week ago. He has done fairly well with the transition and loves his "Thomas Bed". The only problem I have run into is that he wakes up at the crack of dawn now. He normally slept from 8:30pm until 8:30am sometimes even later. I figured there was definately going to be the novelty of a new bed but this little man is TIRED. He is a crying, whining, screaming mess all day now because he isn't getting enough sleep. We have started putting him to bed earlier but he won't fall asleep until his normal time. He won't go back to bed in the morning, he plays in his room until I come let him out, which is usually when he is getting loud and I am afraid he will wake the baby up. Any tips or suggestions for getting him bak into his normal sleep habits.

What can I do next?

That's a tough one.....

Is it possible to make his room JUST for sleeping by taking all the toys out of his room? If there is nothing to play with he might be more inclined to sleep instead of play.

Do you have room darkening blinds on his windows? That may help as well.

Good luck!

Try an early nap for now. If he is getting up early he may just need an early nap to get him through the day. I had my son lay in his bed for at least a half hour to an hour whether he fell asleep or not. It gave me some 'quiet time' and him also. I noticed that he felt better afterward even if he didn't fall asleep. It may be tough at first to get him used to it but it will be worth it.

You might try telling him that he can not get out of bed ( except to go the bathroom) until you come to get him in the morning. If he will stay in bed quietly he might fall back asleep if he realizes he has to wait for you to get him.
