Need Help with Stray Cat, VERY Disappointed with Local Shelters

Hi everyone. We have a stray cat that wondered on to our property one week ago. He had clearly been injured by another animal. We took him in, fed him, gave him water and shelter for the night. It was memorial day weekend, we don't have animal control out here in leavenworth county (rural). Anyway, the following Tuesday, I started calling shelters in Lawrence and in Johnson county. The sheriffs department here shoots strays to help control the population of dumped and abandoned pets! I drove this cat all over the place trying to find some place that will take him. Every shelter turned me down. The human society in Lawrence told me I should hand him over to the sheriff, even if it meant he would get shot!!!! I was horrified and disappointed by that! He loves people, not so fond of other animals. He's probably had to fight to survive for awhile so I don't blame him, however, I already have five pets and have to put them first. Any suggestions on what to do with this cat? I can't keep him but don't have the heart to let him be put down. He's young, 1 -2 year old, very sweet disposition. Black male Tom cat. If you are interested in this cat or have suggestions for me, please let me know ASAP!!!! Thanks everyone!

I live in rural Gardner and had to find two sweet kitties a home myself. What I did was take them to a local farmer. He gladly took them in as "mousers" in his barn. True barn cats. I would find a farmer near you, they'll usually take them in.

that's so great of you to take responsibility for this cat. you might try posting a notice on craigslist.com for a free cat to good home. just another idea. good luck!

I'm sorry to respond so late - I just went thru old emails. Anyway, if you still have the kitty, my sister works at Tuttle Vet Clinic in Basehor and she often can help find homes. If you are interested, PM me and I will give you her name. Or if you'd like to just call Tuttle, the number is ###-###-####. Please don't let the sheriff have the cat!

We may be able to help out. We live in Rural Lawrence and recently lost a cat to illness. We do have dogs and he would be an outdoor farm cat (who still gets lots of attention) I sent a private message as well. Feel free to contact me if you think our situation would work.

I wish I could help, could you keep him as an outdoor/stray sort of cat? I do have to say for the Lawrence shelter at least, they get overwhelmed this time of year with all the students moving. A lot of them don't care to take the time to find a new place that allows pets and they all get dumped at the shelter. (Not making excuses for them, but I know that may be some of it). It would be hard for me as well to know he would just be shot by the sheriff. Sorry for not helping your deliema much, I wish you the best of luck though.

Maybe try pet connections, I believe they have moved to Shawnee off Johnson Dr near the Target. I had a Pomerainian we had gotten when his owner had passed away and he and my Lab didn't get along at all. They helped me find a rescue group to take him.
