Help Me Find My Dog a Home. Please!

I work in animal rescue & have found that if you go to the rescue sites for the silky terrier rescue - one I've found that seems promising is Silkyrescue.tripod.com. You can contact them & let them know your situation & they can help. The only thing is that you'd have to get the dog to them - sometimes there's a network of people who drive dogs from place to place & basically make an underground doggie railroad. With gas prices going up, we're starting to lose a few drivers. I hope this helps.

Kirsten gave you some great ideas.

Since she's part silky, you can try to locate a Silky terrier rescue. If you know what else she's mixed with, you can try a rescue for that breed. Most rescues and shelters will charge you a surrender fee. Please don't let this discourage you from giving her to a shelter or rescue - the fee is to help cover the cost of her care until she is re-homed and the rescues don't "make" anything by charging that fee.

I used to own/operate a dog rescue in Illinois until my heartstrings couldn't take it anymore - the fees that are charged don't even begin to cover the cost of caring for an animal.

I wish you luck... you're falling on some hard times but like you said, everything happens for a reason. I'm sure you'll come out of this whole situation better for having experienced it. I hope you can find a shelter/rescue that will look for a forever home for your terrier or a home that will be her forever home.

Check with Happy Tales located in Franklin ###-###-####. There are several pet adoption sites in Nashville as well. They screen applicants and will be sure your dog is provided a good home.

Please contact a local rescue group who's sole purpose is to find a 'forever family' for your lovely dog. They will screen and have contracts signed with the new owners to find the perfect match.

Hi J., There are a lot of rescue groups in the area. I would contact one of them and see if they can help you. You can check with the silky terrier/yorkie terrier groups or just look for a terrier group. If they can't help you, I'm sure they have other options. Ask your local veterinarian as well. Good luck!

So sorry you have to part with your little sweetie, J.! Most breeds have rescue leagues on line, perhaps you could google that. Also, the Humane Society online will be able to steer you to a safe home. I know she's adorable and you hate to give her up. If the home-sharing is temporary, maybe you could find a foster for her.

I suggest contacting your local humane society or ASPCA. The local humane society here will often do what they can to "foster" homeless dogs until they find a new home.

Hi J....how wonderful it is to have a family you can go home to. It's good hear how you have put everything in perspective although I know it may be difficult at times.

My husband and I may just be the answer. We are hoping to adopt a pet for our four year old son. He's been begging for a dog for over a year now. We told him he has to take care of his room so we will know he will take care of a dog. For the past six months he wakes up and cleans his room without question.

Your terrier mix sounds like exactly what we were hoping for. We have a huge fenced in backyard for playing a warm home loving home for a pet to live in. Our desire is to have a house dog. Is your dog potty trained?

I've noticed at my vet's office that there are often photos and descriptions of pets who are available for adoption. That might be one possibility. Also, let me tell you our experience. When my daughter became a toddler, we had to look for a new home for our dog, because no matter how much I worked with her (the dog), she just could not adjust and we worried for our daughter's safety. The dog was 10 years old at the time. I took a good photo of the dog and an upbeat description to a church that I was connected with, and they posted it on their bulletin board. One of the church families knew a retired lady who was looking for a pet, this lady called me, and the situation worked out beautifully. Giving our pet away was probably the hardest thing I've ever done (we had had her since she was 4 months old), but her new home is SO perfect for her, that it just seems like it was meant to be. There may be other venues to consider, besides churches, where you could post a photo and description of your dog. I wish you the very best as you try to find a loving home for your dog.

Hi J.. Where is the dog located now? I might have a few friends who may be interested. Is she house trained? Good with people/pets? What is her name? Current on shots? So sad that the pet is always the first to go... I'm sorry for your situation. But you are right... things do happen for a reason.

Have you ever thought of freecycle?? I got our cat from there and you can arrange them to come out to your house and meet the dog first. Or you can give her to the adoption agency here in Goldsboro called Diamonds in the Ruff. They are awesome and all their dogs are fostered out to homes so they do not stay in a kennel. This organization also makes sure the dogs go to GREAT homes. They do lengthy background checks and home visits. Hope this helps. Good luck!!

What you might want to do is call your local ASPCA if you have one or the Humane Society, they find homes for animals of all kinds. I had a stray dog placed in a very good home a few years ago through them. You could also put a picture and a description about your dog at your vet office or a pet store. They may help you too. Hi J., You have some wonderful advice for placing your little dog....best of luck on that pursuit. You may wish to find a home that is willing to be a TEMPORARY home, since you don't know how long you will be stressed financially. It could be that you could manage better withing months. I've been married 38 years (WHOA!! time sure flies!)and we have been through some ups and downs. I wish I could say I trusted God to see us through (as He promises) but I'd be lying. So I wasted a good bit of energy fretting. At one point, I had stopped working full time (RN) and dropped my disability insurance because I was sick a lot and thought I needed more home time. Our youngest child was 3, the next oldest in her first year of college. My husband was laid off from his job, and I had to undergo major surgery for a kidney problem--after which I had a paralyzed leg that took 6 months to mend. Fast forward to a year later: my husband settled in a new job in another state--me walking again, and soon working part time again. All the dogs, cats and guinea pig reunited! It was stressful, but God provided for us, and He will see you through too. God bless you...D.

Have you tried Craisglist? That is a great place to give away things. There are lots of people wanting dogs on there at times. Some people really want one but can't afford to "adopt".

Where exactly are you located? I live in Mt. Sterling, Kentucky and I have a neighbor that may be interested in giving your dog a home. She has two children (Sydney 7 and Jackson 4) and she has been looking into getting a dog for them. I assume the dog is potty trained and good with children? I know you said it was a terrier mix - do you know what the mix is? Is it a male or female? Is the dog spade or neutered? Is he/she in good health? Sorry for all the questions but being a huge animal lover myself, I want to make sure it is a good match for both my friend and your beloved pet. Thanks! S.

Check online to see if there is a Terrier Rescue program in your area. Also, local vets and animal shelters may know. We were in a similar situation with our lab and through the East Tn Lab Rescue program we found him a GREAT home...we actually still get to see him! Good luck!
