Hi Moms,

Please give me your opinion on a strong girl's name. I am undecided about picking a baby name and wanted to see what other Moms thought. Here are the 3 favorites which I will pick from:
Jennifer
Bianka
Mercedes

Thanks a bunch!

You said you wanted a strong girl's name, Jennifer is so common, it is neutral, Mercedes gives me the impression of being msaterialistic because it's like named ater a car, but out of the three, Bianca is great name, pretty, uncommon, and strong!

Hi Angela,
I feel like Jennifer is a dated name, popular in the 1970's and 1980's. It's time has gone and it hasn't come back yet. Mercedes is not my style. I'm not into "cre8ive" spellings - the classic Bianca would be lovely. I dont know where the "k" comes from, but it simply looks wierd, it doesn't improve on or accentuate the traditional Bianca in any way. Sometimes classic really is best and doesn't need to be "improved." I would go with Bianca.
Good luck.

My pick is Bianka. It's so pretty & uncommon. Jennifer to me is so plain Jane & too common. My 2nd choice is Mercedes also a pretty name! Do you have any middle names picked out to go w/ these names? Maybe that could help you narrow it down some more!

Dear Angela,

From that list, my first pick would be Bianca spelled like this -- with a c. The k makes me want to pronounce it differently -- bee-YANK-a instead of bee-YAHNK-a, which isn't as pretty, IMO.

My second pick would be Mercedes, but that depends a little on pronunciation. I think it's beautiful when pronounced by native Spanish speakers, but in Americanese -- mur-SAY-dees -- I just think of the car.

Jennifer would be my third pick just because it's SO common among women of my own generation. I still like the nickname Jenny, though.

Definetly Bianca. But with a c because I really don't like when people make up their own spelling of names (that is unless in your culture Bianca is spelled with a k). Jennifer is sooooooo common. Not so much anymore but it is kinda boring. Mercedes only sounds good if you say it with a Spanish accent. Otherwise you think of the car. Let us know what you pick!

I personally do not like jennifer (everyone and their sister have that name :), and mercedes would be a reason for kids to pick on her. I love Bianka with a -k.

If you use Bianca, please do spell it with a C!

My personal favorite is Mercedes. Jennifer is, to my ear, a name very strongly associated with the 1970s, when it was extremely popular. It sounds dated. Bianca makes me think of Bianca Jagger -- the rock star Mick Jagger's ex-wife -- which isn't an association I would choose to have to a child. Mercedes is very pretty.

First off three good names to choose from.
Jennifer is to common of a name. (I grew up knowing 5).
Bianka with a K is different. Never seen it with a K.
Mercedes.... sorry not a fan of car brands as names for kids.

Bianka with a K is my winner and top choice.

Good Luck :)

I like Bianka but also with a "C". Not because of pronunciation but because her name will always be mis-spelled, if you live in the states, unless some one sees it firts on paper. Spelling is always pretty on paper but it is very annoying when your name is constantly mispelled. I went to school with a girl named Jessika. Her mom thought the "K" was pretty and different. Every teacher, clerk anyone who had to write her name spelled it the classic way and she was always annoyed by it. My opinion. Congrats though on your new baby. Maybe since this is your short list you can wait till she is born and see if she looks likea Bianka, Jennifer or a Mercedes :)

Go to this website: http://babynamesworld.parentsconnect.com/ when you click on the name you like you will see a tab that says "Considering this name" People with the name say how they feel about having this name, plus they say if they were teased because of the name, what type of teasing. I used it when naming my daughter. I went with Marni Suzanne.

Angela:

I think it often depends on how a first name sounds with a last name. You don't mention your last name. It is also personal preference. When I was living in Texas, one mom didn't seem to like any of the names my husband and I were thinking of because they were your everyday names I guess. This mom named her first daughter her maiden name on her birth certificate which I thought was strange (Loller). And her second daughter's middle name was also a last name I think. It was Fisher! I named my daughter Alyssa Lauren and yes I guess it could be common but I love it. I've heard names like Reagan and Clover. Is there a family name or the first letter of a family member you like? You might also care about the meaning of a name. Good luck!

Hi;

I would pick Bianka, but would got with a more common spelling (Bianca). Otherwise, she will always be having to spell it out. (Love Mercedes, too)

I, too, am an engineer - electrical. How about you? Which type are you?

Pick my name (LOL!!). It's Starlyn and everyone calls me S. & I love it. I always wanted a baby named after me--hee hee!

Seriously, I would pick Bianca. Mercedes sounds a bit sleezy or materialistic to me but it is the name of a Greek God too, right? Bianca sounds strong and creative. Jennifer is just boring.

Yeah if you go with Bianca, don't make your kid ALWAYS have to correct everyone because it's spelled with a "K". Bianca is different enough without having to make the spelling different.

Hi Angela,

Choosing a name is a very personal decision. Sometimes it helps to wait until you meet baby to see what name fits best. There is nothing worse than a name that doesn't 'fit' the person's personality.

In my opinion, though, from your list of three I would avoid Jennifer - soooooo many Jennifers out there. Mercedes - too much teasing from other kids with car references. That leaves Bianka - original, and doesn't rhyme with anything for teasing.

It's tough though, because you could have personal connections with the names. For example, my middle name is Margaret (fifth generation) so I felt obligated to use that name with my daughter even though I had no interest in doing so. We created, or came up with Marlee. Mar from Margaret, and Lee is my mom's middle name so she felt that her name was still carried on somehow.

Good luck with your decision. It is one of those things that when you hear the name, you will know - no doubts.

Happy Holidays,
L.
