My sister-in-law and I were talking this weekend. She is set to have a c-section next week. They are done having kids so she was thinking about having her tubes tied b/c they are in there anyways. I was telling her about an article that I read in Parents Magazine or American Baby or something like that. It can't be more than a few months old but it was an article written from a Dad's point of view & it talked about how a vasectomy is safer and more effective than having tubes tied but for the life of me I can't find it back. Any of you guys read this magazine or did I dream it up? I went to Parents.com & redbook.com to try to find the article in the archives but for the life of me I can't find it. Not a huge deal, just wondering if you ladies had read it.

What can I do next?

I had my tubes tied when they did an emergency C-section with my youngest daughter. I did not have any problems from it, I think it depends on the woman. If her husband won't agree then she needs to decide what she wants to do! I just knew that I did not want more children ever. I was having my 5th child, birth control pills did NOT work, (my medication wiped them out) a fact they told me with this pregnancy!! I didn't like the way an IUD worked because there was still the chance of pregnancy. I wanted to be sure that I was not going to have another baby ~ 4 & 5 were not suppose to be here...wouldn't give them up, but... So I opted to have my tubes tied...my periods were not any different after I had it done.

I would HIGHLY suggest she NOT do it. I had heard many stories and I was against it. We had decided my DH would get a vasectomy after the baby was born. Well, my DH got fired 8 weeks before our son was to be born. I also have to have C sections so I said while you are in there and Cobra is paying might as well do it. I regret it! I have had nothing but problems and my periods are weird, off, and I bleed out a super tampon every hour or sooner for the first 3 days. Cramps so bad. I never had any problems before with my cycle. I have been to the doctor 3 times now and this last time the ultrasound tech was telling me that she sees so many women coming in with the same problems I have from getting a tubal.
I really wish I had waited and had my DH get it done but with him not working or having ins. I really didn't want to accidentally get pregnant again before he could have the procedure done. So now I am facing a hysterectomy if the BC I now have to be on doesn't work.

One of my coworkers had her tubes tied. She has lots of blood clots during her menstral cycle sorry if TMI. Also she says she is bleeding a lot more heavily. I on the other hand opted to do and IUD. I did have some issues with bleeding a little more but after six months things got better. I think it is quick and painless to have it inserted. There are options out there so she could check into that also. A vasectomy is a lot easier but her husband would need to agree to it. Good luck

I am not a big fan of permanent sterilization, but I do know that vasectomies are MUCH less risky than tubals.

I don't know where that specific article is, but if you just Google "Tubal ligation versus vasectomy" you will come up with a plethora of sources that speak about how much more risky the tubal ligation is.

I think it was Parents magazine and it was an article about "vasectomy parties". It was interesting and a little strange. I recall reading it, though so you didn't dream it up.

I just read an article about the same thing. I believe it was written by a doctor, and the best and safest procedure is for the man to have a vasectomy.
