I'm new to this area and I want to continue working out. I would like to find a location to workout that would be right for a pregnant mommy. I was hoping there would be a place that offers water exercise classes, but couldn't find any in the area? I'm open to any suggestions or ideas to help out!

What can I do next?

A.,

I'm living in small Kansas town and was used to being able to exercise at several places on K-State's campus. Moving here where there was not a place to exercise 24 hours a day and not even being able to use the sidewalks or streets because they are not maintained was hard. What I did was just get out and walk. At the time of my 2000 pregnancy I was playing baritone in the local college band and walking over two miles a day out of sheer boredom. That birth was a breeze.

By the time I had baby #2 in 2003 we were living in the country and exercise again became a problem. I would have to take DS1 with me and fend off dogs, knowing that if something bad were to happen no one would be around to help me. I wound up driving in to town every morning to swim at the high school. Did this again in 2006...for a few minutes a day I was weightless. AHHH!

So, my suggestions are to walk and swim, if possible.

You should check out the YMCA in Owasso, or St. John's - Siegfried Health Center in Tulsa. The St. John's facility has just about everything you could want. I hear the new YMCA has a lot of great stuff too.

Hi A.,

I don't think they have anything specifically for pregnant moms, but the Y on Downtowner has some aquatics classes and some yoga classes specifically targeted at those w/the need for modified exercise. It's pretty inexpensive to get a family membership and they have a nursery/playroom for Soraya! I'll let you know if I think of anything else. Good luck (and welcome to Mobile!).

I work out at the Omni in Daphne and there is one in Mobile also. I have seen many preg. women there and they do offer lots of great classes! Good luck on your search and congrats on the preg.----A.--- Opps you want a place to swim sorry no pool there but Thomas hospital in Fairhope offers class at there wellness center and they have preg. swimming classes. I had a friend years ago go there and she loved it. Thomas is owned by springhill I think so there might be a pool at other hospitals wellness centers in Mobile.----A.

Hi A.! Welcome to OK. I moved here recently myself but my son was 6 wks at the time, and I also wanted something to get out and do to keep myself active. In looking for "mommy and me" type exercise groups I also found something for pregnant gals. Don't know how close you are to OKC, but we have Mamaste Yoga here (can't recall website, but you could google it). They offer both prenatal and postnatal yoga, and it's relaxing and a good way to meet other moms. The instructor, Karen, is great! Wish I'd been here during my pregnancy so that I could do the prenatal...maybe next time! :o) Hope that helps. Good luck!

Small towns aren't all bad. You need to figure out a way to meet some new friends. There probably is stuff going on, just different that what you were use to. High school sports is usually big and I'll bet there is some local festivals or fund raisers that the whole community supports. Are there any groups you could join with your 1 yr old (library maybe?) to meet other moms. You may not be able to do water aerobics, but there may be yoga classes at the local gym or perhaps you could walk with new friends.

Hi A.,

When I was pregnant, I did prenatal yoga with a woman named Karen Prior. Not sure what the current class schedule is -- and I think you have to be in your second trimester to begin -- but her website is here: http://www.mamasteyoga.com/karen.htm

She is very nice and you also will get to meet a few other women in the same boat. Congratulations, and good luck!
