Need Carpet Cleaner to Get Rid of Cat Urine on Carpet

Can anyone recommend a good carpet cleaner (professional or do it your self remedy) to get rid of cat urine on wall to wall carpet? It's disgusting. I've tried using the enzyme stuff from the pet store, but the smell is still there and the cat continues to use that area as her toilet. And yes, I have totally saturated the area (carpet and pad) with the enzyme cleaner.

What can I do next?

a vinegar and water solution ( I think 1/2 & 1/2) should take care of it. I don't have cats but I have dogs and this works really well. They cannot detect the smell - so they don't go back to that spot. Good luck!

Hi J.,

We used Nature's Miracle and it works great if you catch the urine before it settles into the carpet and dry out, otherwise, it doesn't work as well. Our cat kept urinating in the several different spots repeatedly and the smell just eventually took over. We rented a steam cleaner from Longs Drugs several different times and it worked some but not as good as a professional steam cleaner.
We used "All American Carpet & Upholstery Cleaners" Their # is ###-###-####. The guy did a very good job. You can't even smell the urine when you enter into the room and the smell is not nearly as bad as what it smelled like at nose level. I also recommend using these cans called "Scccat". These cans have pressurized air in them and they shoot out when they detect motion. So, if your cat or really anyone walks in front of it, it scares the cats away preventing them from urinating in the area where you place the cans, and it also scares and startles people who may not be aware of it. Hope this helps and Good Luck!

Hi J.,
I use vinegar and water on most spills including the kids mattresses after an accident. I use 1 part vinegar to 3 parts water.

For heavy duty spot and smell removal, I use "Capture." You can buy it at a carpet/flooring store. I actually used this on a used car we bought. Previous owner smoked. No smoke smell anymore.

Good luck.

I bet you probably have already done this but just in case you didn't, you should look at my question that I posted a few months back about avocado throw up and a lot of people recommended some good remedies. I think they will work too with your problem. My post is in the home maintenance and carpet cleaning section. Good luck!

Hi J. - If you catch the urine while it is wet, especially if it has just happened, pour regular table salt- lots of it - on the area. It will absorb the urine and neutralize the smell. Then vacuum it up later. It is a really hard smell to get rid of. My cat was diabetic and before we got it under control she drank tons of water and did not make it to her box. I kept the big salt container around the house! If this is something new - the cat peeing on the carpet - you might want to take her for a checkup.
One of the litter box companies (Can't think of the name) makes a powder to put in the little box for the smell. I used to sprinkle it on my carpet - wait about 20 minutes and then vacuum it up. It did help with the smell. Good Luck!

Try getting the Spot Bot carpet cleaner (buy or borrow) and use a mix of white vinegar and water (1 to 3 ratio) to help neutralize the cat odor. Once the vinegar dries, the smell goes away, or you can do a "rinse" with plain water.

The Spot Bot is a small wet vac that has a function (button) that keeps it cleaning in one place for five minutes. All you have to do is set it down, press a button and walk away while it scrubs the carpet for you.

We had a major problem with our cat urinating on the carpet and I tried out a company here in Sacramento called Chem-Dry (I don't know if they are a chain, maybe they have one in your area).

Anyways, what they did was come in with a black light so they could saturate all the problem areas with their product first. It worked great for the time we were there, we ended up moving about 5 months after we had it done so i'm not sure about long term.

But even if you don't have an actual company called Chem-Dry there may be another company who does this type of carpet cleaning. It's a different process than normal steam cleaning. Even though it has the work "Chem" in it they do not use chemicals if I recall correctly part of the cleaning process involves using carbonized water. I'm not really sure how to explain the whole process but it worked for us!
