Cat Urine in Carpet

We raised Sphynx (hairless cats) for a number of years. I HIGHLY recommend Odoban. Its a commercial grade cleanser and disinfectant but also an enzymatic cleaner. Its WONDERFUL. They sell small bottles of it at Walmart but if you have a Sam's club by you, go there! (even if you dont have a membership. You will just pay 10% more). A Gallon of the consentrate is about $10 and worth every penny. Just saturate the carpet so you know its getting through the pad and to the floorboards (since I bet the cat pee did!) and then let it dry. The stuff is amazing and works really well for any other cleaning you have to do also! Good luck!

Anyway just wanted to tell you that nothing ever REALLY gets rid of Cat Urine Permanently. I used to work at an Apartment complex and we had many many carpets ruined by residents cats. We tried everything, even professional grade cleaning products that claim to remove it. It just isn't possible. We would always end up changing the carpet AND Pad and before laying the new padding and carpet, You must paint KILLZ on the floor and let dry prior to laying your carpet and pad. Pets are awesome, but they can be very destructive too.

Find a Chem-Dry carpet cleaner in your area. They have a pateneted process for removing urine from carpeting. This process is called P.U.R.T.. The success rate is in the 90%.
Depending how bad it is the padding and tack strip may need to be replaced and floor sealed

White Vinegar!! You can put it in a spray bottle and water it down 75 vinegar and 25 water. If you ever have any issues with any urine smell it does the trick. You can also use it in your laundry if you have had anything that had a urine smell on it. Good Luck, M.

there is a product called "Kids and Pets" that is made specifically for this problem and is safe for the kids, pets, and carpets. We have found it to work wonderfully!

I have three cats and I have tried everything. If you get it while it is still fresh (wet), I have had the best luck with Simple Solution (found at Meijer or most other stores). Squit it on let it soak, and mop up with absorbent towels. If the spot is already dry (and it usually is when you find it), this still works the best. For odors, I spray/saturate the area with a mixture of one part white vinegar to two parts hot water. Saturate a handtowel (preferably white so you can see if there is urine left in the carpet)in the solution, place wet - not dripping - on area and let dry. It may take a few days to dry. Repeat as necessary. Cats do not like the smell of vinegar. Good luck! Let me know if you find something else that works better. WHATEVER YOU DO, do not use Amonia - this is what you use to litter train a cat. It will attract your cat to the spot.

Hello, I hope you got some great responses because just Dog urine I had to pull the carpet up & I spend alot of $$ on different products to remove it & also got the carpet cleaned professionally, once the padding gets wet that spot keeps coming up just like a stain. I had 1 cat for 15 years & now have 2 dogs, plus have 4 children but are all grown except for 1 (10 yr old) but the pets do more damage than the kids, I seen your responses & the White Vinegar did work a little for awhile but the smell always comes back. the best thing I have ever used is white vinegar. Having 2 cats and a dog, it is the miracle wonder. On dark carpet though-test a little in a corner to make sure it wont bleed out your carpet. You may choose to mix in a little water. I usually pour it straight from the bottle into the spot, let it sit about 10 min and then blot with a clean towel.
If the urine gets on anything you can throw in the washer--I use a cup of vinegar with the soap-and it comes out clean and fresh the first time.

I also use a product called spot shot for the stains--gets out ANYTHING!

The vinegar has saved me a lot of time and energy.

I have you tried vinegar and water mix? It should nuetralize the smell. I haven't tried this next one, but I heard peroxide works well for all stains. I have even heard baking soda too! Good Luck.

I had this problem with my cat before we put her to sleep--she had kidney failure.

I never found anything and I tried!! Hopefully she has only done this in one spot. What we did was call a carpet place and had them repair the spot in the corner with new pad and a left over piece I had saved when we put the carpet in. This looked great, and you could not tell!

We had a cat that peed in our living room we got the smell out using right guard deoderant spay. not that that smells much better! but they have new stuff now called urine b-gone that is supossed to work really well

I can understand what you are going through. We have 3 cats and one is older and tends to get urinary infections and has wet on several things throughout our home. Not sure how well it will work for cat urine, but i know it works wonders for dog urine on carpet. It is called urine be gone, I got it from Meijer in the pet dept. Good Luck :)

I've used a product called Nature's Miracle for dog urine and it works great. You can only buy it at Pet stores, but it is well worth it. I find the liquid that you pour on the spot works better than the spray because it soaks in better. Good luck!

I've used ODO-BAN from Sam's Club, it take the smell out and even take smoke smell out of clothes. We used it at a local laundromat when we did fire laundry for a restoration company.

You need to reapply once every 3 months.

I have found a product that I love for removing carpet stains/odors. It is called Kids'n Pets, and you can get it at Target, Wal-Mart & Meijer, near the other rug cleaners. I have never used it on cat urine but I have used it on a couple of my daughters leaky pull-up accidents, as well as pet and human vomit accidents, and I have always been very pleased with the results! It is not too costly, and it is all natural, non-toxic and odorless. Just follow the directions on the bottle for removing urine stains/smells.

Try Nature's Miracle for cats. It goes to the enzyme of the stain and breaks it up so the cat can't smell the spot anymore. Make sure it's for cats and not just the general one. The cat formula is specially made to get out the ammonia odor from cat urine.

Try a 50/50 mixture of white vinegar and water. Saturate the area and sop up with paper towels or cloth. Then rewet and let area air dry. Has always worked for me.

I was going to suggest a commercial product called "Consume" that is AMAZING on odors, but I'm not sure how it would do on dark carpet. It isn't a bleach product, so I've used it on many many things, even colors. You'd have to try it in a hidden spot. But believe me, it works on that horrid cat urine smell!! I found mine on line at a local janitorial supply.

Try something called Nature's Miracle (you can get it at a pet store) This stuff works on pretty much anything. (it will even remove skunk smell from a dog) I have used it on my black dog and other surfaces and have had no problem with fading (but do a spot check in a unnoticeable area first to make sure it will not affect the dark blue carpet). J.

I have successfully used Urine Begone on both cat urine and on furniture when my 4 yr old had an accident on it when she was little. If the stain or odor return on the carpet, pull up that area of carpet and pad and seal the floor with Kiltz primer paint. This will seal the wood and keep the urine that spread to the wood from coming back up into the carpet and pad. Also, once you get the smell out, sprinkle pepper over the area for awhile to keep the cat from using the area again. This works for all animals in or out doors. They always smell an area before they use it. When they get a wiff of the pepper, they sneeze and leave the area alone.

My husband installs floor covering...it will never come out. It'll act much like an airfreshner though, in that once you clean it enough, the smell will be so faint to you that you will become used to it and not smell it anymore.
But my husband can walk into any home and within 10 minutes...and say "CAT", just by the unique smell.

I have to go with those who recommended Odo-Ban!! I take care of disabled people some of which have continence issues. I also have a client whose laundry reeks of smoke even after I wash it.
I have used odo-ban for these problems and many others and it works wonderfully!!! They sell it in small bottles at Wal-mart in the laundry aisle or you can it get by the gallon at Sam's Club. Just read the label on the gallon jug. I failed to do this and went through the gallon pretty quickly. You are supposed to dilute it. It will probably work better full strength for the cat urine though. Good Luck!! :)

I had the same problem and I rented a carpet shampooer from the grocery store, and bought special shampoo for pet odors. this pretty much took care of it. If it still stinks after this, call a professional carpet cleaning service, they are a little pricey, but still cheaper than new carpet. Also, I would wash the walls and trim well with a product for pet odors, sometimes cats get more than just the floor when they spray.

its called kids and pet you can buy it at walmart in the cleaning isle it work great on carpet cloths and funiture. it nutralizes the oders and also remozes stains i had a cat that was very old and drying so he was losing control of everything and going everywere then some one told me about kids and pets it is great stuff. my cat even peed on my down filled coat and it took the smell out of that. it cost about 8 dollars. good luck and hope it works for you.

Try white vinegar mixed with water - about equal parts. My cats didn't pee but threw up alot. It helps neutralize the acid. One of the carpet cleaners recommeded this. It might work for pee.

Try using a carpet cleaner with Spray n Wash Duel Action liquid (one side is clear/the other is pink). I works really good for cleaning almost anything from any fabric!

I have used peroxide and it works great but check to see if it will fade the color of your carpet on a hidden area first. It really bleached out one of my woven rugs but not my carpet

You may be able to have a carpet layer cut a square or "shape" and put in another color,Then do a few more all over his room..be imaginative, if you can't replace the same carpet. I didn't buy a house one time because the odor was so horrendous. I'd get that section out as soon as possible. Cat urine is one of the worst! Good luck! MS

Try a product Called Nature's Miracle. You can find it at Pet smart...works great...the only thing I use...And Please use only this before you try anything else because other things might "set" the smell and stain (it has happened to me so I know) And you must follow the direction EXACTLY!!!! After all that if it's still there...I would call a professional.

I read some of the posts... I definately would not use ammonia! You could try vinigar. I think you may need to replace the carpet and paint the floor board with at least primer to get the smell out. I also work for a company that sells great eco friendly cleaners. There is a product I use on my carpet that has worked for dog messes poo and pee... have you tried Urine Be Gone?? Look it up on line, it comes with a black light so you can see where the urine is.

We had a 24 year old cat who in her last year or 2 had a few accidents. OdoBan (we bought a gallon jug at Sam's Club) saved us from giving up on her.

I know there are products that claim to take the smell away completely, but no matter how much cleaning has happened, my nose can ALWAYS pick up cat pee in somebody's house! It's one of those things that you may get used to, but will never be completely gone. I am a cat lover (although deathly allergic) so this isn't coming from a dislike of felines! You may be stuck with replacing the carpet and keeping the cat out, as he/she will be likely to pee there again anyway!

Do not use ammonia!!! Simple Solutions and/or Nature's Miracle claim to have enzymes that remove cat and dog urine, feces, vomit etc. I have used both products very successfully with my dogs - sorry, no cats in my household just yet. Professional carpet cleaners would probably be your best bet as you'll most likely spend the same amount of money on cleaning products (depending on the area needing to be cleaned) as you would to have a professional come in to clean it.

I accidentally locked my cat in a closet when we left for a weekend trip! Luckily, my brother came over and happened to hear him...but he did urinate repeatedly in that closet, so I had a problem.

Anyway, go to your local store pet department and buy a cleaner with "enzymes" in it. There are a few brands out there and they all work! Just follow the instructions, saturate down to the padding, and let dry. Repeat if necessary, but this stuff does work for sure.

I haven't found anything that works perfectly, but I've found a couple of products that help.

The first product is called OdorZout. It works great at getting rid of smell, however, it doesn't clean the carpet area, only removes smells. You lightly sprinkle the granules over the area where the cat is peeing, leave overnight, and vacuum the next day. WARNING: Cover the area with something or your cat will pee right on top of the granules!

The second product is called OxiClean Carpet Spot & Stain Remover. There are a lot of "Oxi" type products, so make sure you get this one in the bright green bottle. This works good on smell but even better on removing the stain.

I usually use the OxiClean first, then if needed, the OdorZout. Problem is, I've found nothing that removes the smell completely so the cat doesn't go back to the same area. You may have to figure out a way to block that area off so the cat can't get there anymore, like putting a toy box in that area.

It's probably the hardest smell to remove. I'll assume your cat is the culprit. I have used a neutralizer that I found at Petco and it seemed to have been the most effective. You use the neutralizer full strength and let it air dry. Repeat until the smell is gone. Then you have to make sure that the cat no longer has access to that area. Our first cat was a stray and had some issues at a very young age. He hit a few rooms and I'll admit, I removed the carpet in one of the rooms.

Did you know that you can use a black light to see cat urine if you think there may be other areas? My daughter even had a carpet cleaner use one before cleaning her rugs as part of their "thoroughness" since she had a cat. Hope this helps.

I called a few places when I had this same problem, and they all told me DO NOT use amonia or vinegar. That will only make the cat urinate in the same place again. Use Natures Envy - purchased from the pet store. It works!!!!! and if you don't think it does, it has a money back guarantee.

Good luck with that - my cat passed away a year ago and i still have the odor in my dining room from where he frequented! Especially when it is humid. I can tell you what i tried - baking soda, vinegar and water, and a commercial brand i bought at a carpet store. Nothing worked and my carpet is now discolored from all the things i tried. We built our house new, so i was very upset and will be replacing carpet and pad soon with hardwood floor!

Urine gone. Look for it at Meijers or go online to see if there'd be a source. Call Meijers first. Maybe Wal-Mart. But call first to save running around. Hardware stores might carry it.

I rented a steam cleaner and the carpet installers told me that if that didn't work, it meant that the pee was too soaked into the pad and that it would never come out. Try renting one.

Have you tried ammonia? I am not sure if it will discolor your carpet, but I have successfully used it in the wash to remove cat urine smells from clothing (we have a naughty cat who thinks dirty clothes on the floor are to be used as a litterbox). I have also used it on rugs...saturate the area with at least a 50/50 solution of ammonia and water (make sure the area is well ventilated!), let it sit for a few minutes, then soak it up, let dry, repeat a few times if necessary. I would follow that process with sprinkling baking soda over the dried area, let it sit overnight, then vacuum the following day. Good luck!

Does Febreeze work? It seems to work with everything else!

there may even be something natural out there, but luckily I have not had to cross that bridge yet... I do know that resolve carpet cleaner does not (from my friend's experience).
